My freezers are half empty at the moment but didn't want to fill them in view of the weather - once I am sure we are unlikely to get any prolonged opwer cuts I'll have a run to costco.
Now fo I go for the ride and have a wander round sainsbugs - I use their basics loo roll so could get a couple of packets.:)
Hello JJ14
Gah, guess which key is playing up this time! You definitely need to stock up tr....
Just a thought, as we empty our freezer, I put in a plastic bottle of water (any size, some ready bottled water). That way it keeps the freezer running efficently, we have an ever ready supply of emergency water, which just needs defrosting, great for days out (when its warmer), so any time the plumber is coming theres always enough for tea!
This space bar is getting over excited.
Keep warm all

I'm not going to make comments on this link I am posting as if it involves benefits depending on your individual circumstances it can mean that you are for or against but many who work are affected too.
And with what is happening in Greece, Cyprus, Portugal, Italy and Ireland this could be an indicator what to expect in our own country and is only the start.
if you disagree with a decision where you need to appeal where benefit has been removed it appears legal aid has been stopped too. Its frightening.
The real meaning of this thread is about to affect so many.

Thanks so much Greyqueen and Bedsit Bob for the information on the wee stoves and gas. I will pop in and have a look soon. Today is cold but not bitterly cold as the other day. The sunshine has come and I have a load of washing on the line outside and a second one in machine as I speak
The snow is melting here so the garden is nearly snow free. Like I said earlier we have been very very fortunate with the weather, and do feel for all those people and animals who are snowed in etc. Must be awful for them.

Thriftwizard, where do you get oats from by the sack? (I'm assuming you meant porridge oats rather than ones meant for horses?) I go through a fair amount, and I've not found anywhere local that does it in big amounts - I'm not a member of a cash-and-carry place or anything.0

Amazon sometimes have them in larger amounts Herbily speaking of which a headsup for vegemite lovers the 12 pack is currently £19 odd rather than £23 odd bit of a saving if you get through it like we do here, the andrex 45 roll packs are on for around the same too
Margaret glad to hear you're thawing a little at last0 -
Hi Pops Thank you for the link. I am horrified reading it all, truly shocking reading:( I also feel angry and scared. I have never felt so angry with a government as I am with this one.
Please keep warm Pops and look after yourself, and I hope you have a nice weekend. MargaretDo a little kindness every day.;)0 -

Hello Pops
That is terrifying reading. I really believe the Cons with Chamealion at its head are reverting to Victorian attitudes. And that society had a huge gap between rich & poor. The difference then was that people were more likely to 'know their place'; nowadays, I hope people are more aware. Reminds me of the Monty Python sketch - I look up to him as he's middle class, I look down at him because he's working class but I look up to him because he's top class,etc...
Totally screwed the worse off, like its supposed to be their fault there are no jobs, they're ill/disabled, the economy is down the pan, they in debt/bankrupt/homeless/no benefits/safety net.
A kick in the teeth for the generation that fought and gave their lives in the war for the promise of a better life....
Sorry, getting off soapbox now.
All I can say is prep away, as there won't be any safety nets, advice, help, grants, etc.
People need to turn to their own local communities, use what services they still have while they are still free (councils do count numbers of visitors as their guide to best value/bench marking).
Return to the times when neighbours knew each other, and helped each other, LETS schemes, freecycle, swop skills (get skills to barter with), keep an eye out for each other, makes it harder for strangers coming in up to no good, communities which have been lost in the search for jobs, more money, and not forgetting friends and families. Help each other survive whats in store.
I think thats the only way our society will cope.
Sorry if this is gloom and doom folks.
Take care PROTECT yourselves.

OH had been bemoaning the loss last year of his brazier as he loved to have little bonfires with the kids lol. He has over the past couple of years had a few of those cheapy "metal bin" types, but they always seem to go on the base and drop through. There are better versions/firepits for alot more cash, which we didn't want to spend.
He spotted instructions online for making a sort of firepit/brazier thing out of oil drums or washing machine drums but we have no welding equipment-he was trying to work this out and source the raw materials so to speak when he found out about a guy just 3 miles away. At the back of his house is a workshop where he fixes washing machines etc and if he can't fix he attempts to recycle and reuse the various parts.
So OH got a firepit made from a recycled washing machine drum, with a sturdy base alreasy attached and ready to go for £13-bargain. He is now working on plans for some kind of frame to hang pots from over the top. But it looks like we could add a grill or metal tray over the top to cook on if we needed and it will be great for those summer evenings alongside out paraffin lamps to sit out.

I didn't want to bring people down but much is happening but not being reported.
I am torn between deliberately avoiding the news and fooling myself everything as I knew or being on top of it all for what good that does. Is it any wonder I feel troubled whilst trying to think all will be well, not as I fear and count my blessings.
Its not the world I knew, that I shared with my Mum and Dad, the happy childhood I had. I have never been known for being sad or not being positive.
Even the medication is having problems kicking in today...
I'd have Mum back in an instant but so many things have/are happening that I am sure Mum would dislike and that goes for me I am tempted to say that Mum is hopefully in a better place and if not she no longer has the worries and cares we are having to.
As always churches are having to do more for their communities at a time when they too are struggling and collections are reduced.
Helping the sick and elderly but many other sections of society giving spiritual guidance but often supplying food via F.Banks. Possibly offering a hot meal to someone and some social contact rather than them being alone at home.
Just found the following
