It s not often I praise Sky but this is a really good article about the situation with the money controls. When I first moved to Greece they had them in place here....I remember customs police taking someone off the airplane because they suspected they had more than the allowed limit of currency on them.
You raised a good point there Pineapple....I have no doubt their account would be docked and they would lose out.Since it applies to business accounts as well I guess people are going to lose deposits they have paid to the business and even money the company have in the account to pay taxes and national insurance and wages . What a terrible mess!

We are seriously thinking of leaving our account with only a couple of pounds/euros in for a while.

We are still badly affected by the snow here. The farmer broke his digger trying to clear the lane yesterday and every able bodied person (apart from the usual suspect) has been out with shovels this afternoon. shovelling away the 3 foot drifts and hacking at the ice underneath. The village above us is still impassable. My decorating dust goggles were perfect protection against the snow and ice being whipped up by the wind! So while they might not be the ideal about town accessory, here in the woolly wilds, I don't think the sheep are that bothered :D

damn, it's not so bad in London, but I sort of wish I picked up the heavily discounted grit being sold at £2.50 per 10kg after the first wave of snow. Who knows whether we're still going to get some serious snow in the upcoming weeks..

As said elsewhere on MSE it was really cold on Friday and that was with two hats, gloves, two scarves, thermal socks, thermal long johns and vest, shirts and jumpers and my face was so red after being in the icy wind.

No better on Saturday and in Durham City it was even colder and yet surrounded by people baring flesh.

Today I reached the retail area of my town and thought its not to bad then hit a spacious area and was walking into a gale and being buffeted all ways with my shopping trolley.

Its good to be home again...even cold indoors so I'm under the duvet with electric blanket on...perhaps its too cold for snow...

  • Aftrnoon all, the news has just said one of the banks in Cyprus has limited cash point withdrawals to 100 euros a day as from lunchtime today, those poor people, it just gets harder and harder for them.

I have just been browsing my bookcase and tucked behind some small volumes I rediscovered two very useful books that I thought I'd lost. They are Diet for a Small Planet by Frances Moore Lappe and Recipes for a Small Planet by Ellen Buchman Ewald. The first is subtitled How to enjoy a rich protein harvest by getting off the top of the food chain and the second high protein meatless cooking. They tell you what combination and amount of foods give you the same if not better protein than meat, like legumes and grains, or seeds and legumes or grains and milk and recipes for making nice meals using these guidelines. If you come across them on your travels they are interesting and full of ideas that would be useful if prices go up much more. They were both published in the early 1970s but the information and ideas in them is relevant to today just as much.

It's still bitterly cold here so the woodstove is making the lounge nice and toasty, it's a bit nippy everywhere else in the house though as we still haven't used the central heating except on a couple of mornings a few weeks ago when it was arctic, I can't work out if were frugal or bananas!!!!!!!! Stay safe all, Cheers Lyn xxx.

Checked the stocks of grit as we bought a pallet load .... Still have a few bags left hope it will see out this weather until warmer stuff gets here and then will look to restock in "summer"

Friend in Cyprus reports money in ATM but lower daily limits, and queues like you would not believe. Looting and house thefts are main concerns now with gangs watching who goes to which machines each day then following them home!!

As always a timely reminder that secrecy is a good trait to follow

:) Thanks for that linkie, 2tonsils, that was an informative read.

What is striking me about this whole Cyprus matter is the sheer blinking incompetance of the politicians. They've taken a bad situation and made is much worse than it had to be. Every day this drags on makes it harder and harder.

I really feel for the people with money in there which they can't access freely, the worry of it must be horrible.

I was thinking about how things were for a lot of people back in the pre BACS-transfer days. Most regular working people were paid weekly in cash. I just joined the workforce on the last knockings of that. How quaint it seems now; a small manila envelope with a payslip inside and banknotes and coins. Can you imagine showing that to a yoof; paypacket has gone the way of purse strings, a reference to something we no longer have.

You had your money and you could spend it right away. No worrying about only being able to get it out of the bank at certain times and in certain quantities, subject to the diktats of the government.

What's quite astonishing, as we go into Week 2 of the lockdown, is that how quickly state appropriation of private money is being normalised. Haircuts and levies sounds so much better than outright theft, don't they? Almost lighthearted. I nearly spat tea this morning when I heard a Cypriot politician talking about the people making a contribution to the bailout as if this was a voluntary act of good citizenship........!

These things will bear closely-watching, that's for sure. Politicans in other countries could start getting ideas.

Hope those of the MSE community in the snowier parts are faring well and that anyone offline due to powercuts will check in with their news when they're able. Keep warm and keep well, lovely peeps.

I have just heard a large tornado has touched down in central Florida and there are numerous reports of widespread damage and people trapped...I will update you if I hear any more news while I am online.

I came to share this article:
    http://www.cyprusexpat.co.uk/blog/read/id:3191/british-expats-may-lose-their-cyprus-homes

I just heard that the President of the USA has phoned the Cypriot president on behalf of the US treasury for Cyprus.....I didn't even know there was one! The Russians have said that if the German government are determined to take their deposits then they are going to seize the bank deposits of all German companies in Russia.....and there are many of them.Meanwhile the Archbishop of Cyprus has invited significant Russians to have lunch with him on Thursday and see what they can do about the situation and he is urging the Cypriot government to come out of the Euro. Interesting ...you couldn't make it up could you?
