Of the lamps in my photo, the 12" lamps take a 1/2" wick, and the 9.5" lamps take a 3/8" wick.I assume they don't last long?
They do last a long time, provided you don't let them burn dry.0 -
I'm up on the moors a few miles from Haworth
We're just above Oakworth, so not too far away at all. My hubby was running up between Haworth/Oxenhope and out towards Hebden Bridge on Sunday morning, he said the drifts were 12-15ft high at some points. It's a nightmare here when the snow hits0 -

Hebden Bridge is a favourite place - fish at the Thursday market and hair cuts above Silly Billy's :rotfl:.0 -

To an earlier post...will try again but found some pencils and a sharpener(total cost 75p)and attempted to repair the zip in my coat...it moves easier but still opens as you pull the zip up:(
Thanks for the idea though, will try a few more times before giving in..."A government afraid of its citizens is a Democracy. Citizens afraid of government is tyranny!" ~Thomas Jefferson

Hi, long time lurker with an old account from when I worked in processing JSA claims! (and hoped I might be of use, somebody was always faster though, great to have such an active board!) I usually read and run but this thread was right up my street
We've been snowed in for a few days here and it's made me realise how rubbish my stocks are. I am usually aware of when snow is likely so I park my rubbish but economical car on the side of a main road, which means I only have a mile or so to hike through the woods to get it, and I'm on an A-road for easy shopping.
Well, ATM my car is in use by other family members, so I'm without transport. I could get a bus but it goes beyond the nipping through the woods to the point where I've found myself unsafe previously skidding downhill on compacted snow to reach the bus shelter.
I'm a fairly fit 27 year old, armed with a great, sturdy pair of tactical combat boots which haven't let me down yet (they are the best boots I've ever owned, and I've owned a lot! whether it's crossing the moors in the snow or just being on your feet all day, I adore this particular brand!) and have grown up with horrid weather, but even I look at the trip into the nearest town (local shops have no decent food after 24 hours) and think, nah, not worth the risk.
I could rattle on forever about my situ, but what is the point? Instead I'll offer what useful tips I can!
Sudocrem! Add it to your 1st aid kit now! Especially if you have animals. I was utterly amazed one year when my Mum applied Sudocrem to my burned arm! :rotfl: I'd always known it as a cure-all for horses and dogs, I was gobsmacked by the idea that we might use it too! Now I just add humans to that list too. Also, the use by date is never ending, and personally we always ignored it anyway so it's sort of everlasting. Always worth a stash. So sudoocrem, it cures everthing! As the best creams doand it isn't just for livestock, you can use it too!
Imodium! (not sure I spelt it right?) the anti-squits type!diarrhea is nothing to laugh at at the best of times, particularly for kids as they dehydrate so fast, but a pack of tabs can be very useful as an intestinal sedative when nothing else is around. Squits are dangerous mostly as they lead to dehydration. The very young, old or ill die of dehydration quickly. Carry some in your walking and bug out bags.
I don't have room to store large amounts of water, but I know where the nearest running water (streams and rivers) are within a mile. I have water purification tabs and I can gather a good load if we get cut off. A happy byproduct of camping/hiking!
It's silly really, I could live for a good while out on the moors and woodlands here, with traps for water and animals (and shooting if it came to that... with a large German Shephard, it would come to that fair fast! He's yet to catch the fattest and laziest of wood pigeons, useless sod, yet his demand for food never wavers, I have to feed him somehow if his dried stuff runs out!) we've certainly enough lazy sheep and grouse.
But I'm still sad that my soup has run out, my stocks this year are rubbish for many reasons, and I'm hungry. I could blast a fat woodpigeon, but then I'd probably have to deal with the RSPCA, and they are a nuisance:D
Well I'm tired and work to do first thing! so saying goodnight to you all! xx0 -
Hi DisreputableDog,
Just thrown some Sudocrem out:mad:as it said use by April 2012 but think I can salvage it.
The Immodium is a good idea too, I always have some Dioralyte in the cupboard. Many things thankfully never are needed but this means they need renewing once in a while.
Having looked at their website because of your post I had no idea that there are two types but two of three flavours are never on the shelf(Natrural and Citrus)It is always Blackcurrent.
The one that I use replaces lost electrolytes due to the effects of diarrhoea but they have another that also helps reduce it. Yet I have never seen it."A government afraid of its citizens is a Democracy. Citizens afraid of government is tyranny!" ~Thomas Jefferson
