Morning all, been chatting to a friend in Cyprus, complete nightmare over there, she is a bit of a preptastic lovelie so not too bad for her. Scences of complete chaos down the road at the local L1dls. Power cuts rollign and largely unannounceed are a constant issue anyway and she is really concerned it is going to get worse ....

We are revisiting the multipurpose stove idea here, were put off by combination of costs as the chimney needs to be completely lined and the RIDICULOUS hearth requirements which would literally mean we lose half the floor space between chinmney and opposite wall of room! Wondering if there is a way round it? Thinking cap on time I think.

Also as DH had confirmation of redundancy this week we will be playing the redo the budget game, stock up the stores game, cut the fat out of the spends (I think I am cutting protein never mind fat it by now!) and belaying plans for further improvements on the house game. Deep joy.

And it is snowing, although not lying as it is so flipping wet here.

    Stay safe and warm everyone

I'm on Freesat from Sky and the only Sky you get is Sky News. Shucks...:(

I have(not set up)Freeview if I want it on my PC monitor which is a spare one as I thought the original one was going to fail, so for now it is a spare.

I have Freesat as I packed in SKY and don't see me ever signing up again(on cost)never mind loads of repeats...

And I may eventually just give up on it all for the amount of TV I watch and save the license fee and watch catch up on the internet.

I can appreciate wanting some light for safety and reassurance but for me if ther is a power cut and it is really dark, as there will be little to do and not much to look at I think if/when it happens I'll just go to bed and try to stay warm.

If I have radio that works I'll have something to listen to...Will stock up on batteries again.

Must try and find a decent hardware store and buy one or two hurricane lamps, still bothers me where to find the parafin(and I'd have to get it home in my shopping trolley(even using the bus)and keep quiet. Unless I can find some on my town somewhere...

May have to look at Wilkinsons and see if they have anything of use. Maybe look for a camping shop and if I get that bus pass I can travel to other areas.

If I have missed anyone I am sorry, I wish I had a neighbour like you Sunshine:)and I hope all is well for you missrlr.

OK I let the dog out round the back and she promptly disappeared in the snow. I have never seen it so bad here. In any winter, never mind back end of March. It's seriously deep - in fact the first thing I saw this morning was a Robin perched on the snow part way up the window peering in to the lounge. A yellow 'Be aware' warning? Oh thanks I didn't notice! I'll really think about whether my journey is necessary once I've dug myself out. Thank you thank you for the heads up. ;)
I'm sure the thousands without power didn't realise either.

    Stay safe Pineapple...

My best and warmest coat has let me down and the zip has broken, it keeps opening after you zip it up. Heaven knows what that will cost to replace. But am reluctant to throw the coat out.

I can sew but not sure I can do that...the coat is so good seems a pity to disguard it...

We can't get Freesat here as no aerial signal. The Freesat from Sky isn't bad - apart from occasional bad weather disruption. But my equipment is getting old and knackered (same goes for the TV:D). So when it goes I'll be thinking seriously about ditching the licence.

How about sewing some velcro on it - at least as a temporary measure? Both me and the dog have coats with velcro and it grips like a vice!

Well, it's STILL snowing here, apart from a brief spell yesterday it's snowed constantly since Thursday night! It's fairly fine stuff, but the wind's strong and after 36 hours or so, the snow's been blown into interesting drifts! Won't be getting the car out, will have to re-think food shopping plans. The buses are ok on the main road a few hundred yards from me, so debating nipping into town, but can only carry 2 bags of shopping. May walk up into the village instead.

We have freeview in one room and V!rgin's basic cable package in the other, but even with dozens of channels available there are plenty of days with nothing I want to watch. Good job I can read and come in t'interweb if I want more entertainment! :rotfl:

Re. hurricane lamps, thanks for the advice; we have 1 hardware store in town, I know they usually have candles and paraffin, but currently out of stock (interesting!), so I bet they have lamps, too. Will check when I can get into town properly.

What a good idea...that must be less expensive and I could probably manage that myself...if I choose the right part of the coat to keep it closed...if done reasonably well the stitching won't be seen...

    Will investigate further:)
