Thank you Lyn , GQ, Pineapple ,Craigywp, Tori.k.
It was so bad here today and I keep thinking they only came home from the hospital yesterday with the baby and now no power.
It was also a good excuse to see the baby and have a cuddle.
Beautiful little boy.
I asked him had any family called in and he said no, her mum couldnt get over with the snow the roads were to dangerous.

You know the old joke of letters that pass in the post?
Last year we had road closures all over this area as the National Grid was being given a thorough refurbishment and maintenance work went on for months, all the pylons and the cabling were given a thorough sort out
this evening on the local news they made the announcement that Fawley Coal Fired Power Station was being taken out of commission before the end of the year!!!!!!!!! Guess where the pylon chain starts????? Yep, Fawley!!!!!!! Priceless!!!!!!!!0 -
I'm on Freesat from Sky and the only Sky you get is Sky News. Shucks...:(
I'd no idea they were that tight with their content. You'd think they would add something as a loss-leader/marketing ploy to tempt people to subscribe.
Mind you, I think watching Revolution, on top of all the c**p going on in the real world, might lead to unease overload.0 -
Doesn't that come under the heading 'Don't borrow trouble - it finds you soon enough!!!!!?0

I think the gas situation is more likely to result in power cuts than loss of domestic gas supply. I understand that is the last thing to be cut off because it is so difficult to repressurise the pipes to each household - everything has to be checked for safety before reconnection, it would be a complete nightmare. But a lot of our power stations are gas fuelled so those are the first in line to be shut down.
It sounds quite alarming to say our gas stores will run out in 36 hours but it will only be a problem if the pipelines supplying us from the continent shut down for whatever reason. It's like saying you've run down the savings account but your salary is still covering the bills.
However I have never been very happy with knowing that we are reliant on gas from Europe. Gas from Norway is one thing but gas from Russia via the rest of Western Europe seems to me to be very subject to disruption - especially if Putin gets a bit annoyed with Germany (now why might he do that right now, hmmm......nothing to do with Cyprus, I'm sure)
It is a big investment having a woodburner fitted. I persuaded DH to go along with ours by telling him we would still be warm even if Putin turned off the tapsIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0 -
day 3 of my annual leave, hard to sleep 16 floors up when the wind is rattling the windows. Bought a groundsheet and 2 packs of glowsticks from wilkinsons(not bought tent yet!) chipping away at the prep. need to buy new stack of batteries for my l.e.d.s as my present stack is at least 2 year old. they have reduced my rent by £7 former heating element could have heat on all day everyday....... then put rent up 3 quid and i now will have to pay heating seperate... cost of living rise again and 3k less a year to meet it:(..... still trying to look on the brightside:)0

Just been out with the dog. It's uneffingbelievable on our lane, weird beautiful swirly drifts up to 3 foot high. Up on the road it's a white out - don't think it's seen a snow plough. And some cottages - depending which way they are facing, look like their windows have been sandblasted with snow.0 -

Glad you are safe now craigywv,
Not a nice experience. It tried to snow all day but here it was just swirling around in the wind.
Some has fallen over night(very wet snow)and as I have to go out tonight and use public transport it will be interesting to see if it improves or becomes worse.
I've said before the evening bus service leaves much to be desired.
5-7 miles from my town the service is better or you can connect to other services that will take to quite a few places even up to midnight but none of them come this way.
So you can reach some locations but if you find a bus that comes my way they only do half a route, terminate and go back to the garage.
Ironically to go back to the garage they have to pass through my town or complete the route they stop half way through so they might as well offer a full journey as there is a bus using fuel, a driver its wasting resources.
The main bus company in my area is also making a big thing over new buses being introduced that use gas not petrol/diesel and lets just say I have heard that they cannot be housed like the usual buses(I forget why)and if they break down the local mechanics cannot repair them and they have call specialists in...
Wouldn't you think those problems would be sorted out first before using them?
And I suppose all fuel can be dangerous if things go wrong but just as well smoking is banned as guess where the gas is stored on the bus?
