ETA, Bob, since you can die of exposure in the UK a lot faster than you'd die of either thirst or hunger, I'd argue that shelter building is an excellent starting point.

    I didn't say shelter building wasn't important.

I said it wasn't the only thing you need to be able to do.

:D I stand corrected. It can be easy to misread the intention behind a post. Sorry.:D

I sometimes have to be reminded to live.

So much uncertainty, bad news, unprecedented happenings. Being prepared can take on a life of it's own.

Sometimes bad stuff happens and you can't be prepared for everything.

As my DH says in the long run we are all dead.

But in the meantime, I'll take some time to look out for pitfalls and prepare as best I can, but, most of all I will live.

Tomorrow is the first day of spring.

It is astonishing how fast all this has turned to ****, flying a million Euros in to sort out something that their government hasn't even agreed to yet.

It's all gone a lot pete tong innit?

I can't imagine how they are going to re-open the banks without capital controls and withdrawal limits which kind of makes a complete mockery of the single currency.

These are very simple designs but for the life of me I have had no success with either of them, although my DD's have no problems.

Mind you I can't open a corned beef tin without a major accident unit being on standby either.

I've finally found the combined paraffin lamp/stove I mentioned earlier.

    DZ2000.jpg

It's called the Dietz #2000 Millennium Cooker Lantern.

ETA: Fascinating catalogue HERE. Some of the prices are a bit steep, but still interesting.

Could we buy a little plot of land with £20,000 :). A little spot somewhere quiet where we could pootle around while the rest of the world goes to pot?!

ooh yes I would buy land, you'd probably get a reasonable amount of agricultural land but of course getting permission to build on it would be difficult. There is info about how to best go about this and if you were tucked away somewhere you could probably get away with a small residence - thinking a roundhouse or yurt or similar - without anyone noticing And what they don't know....
Of course, as has been said, you may have a fight on in a total break down of society scenario, but then whatever you did would be similarly at risk...

Was pondering an educational visit that I went to with DS at Leeds Armouries where they were talking about Knights. Apparently in the 1100s and thereabouts anyone could be a Knight if they 'proved their worth' (bear with me I do have a point:p). But then a bit later on those in positions of power decided they wanted to keep all the power for themselves and 'pulled up the ladder behind them' so to speak. From then on only those with 'noble blood' could be a knight ie their offspring. I see a certain similarity to current goings on. Those that have made their way to the top want to keep all that to themselves now and keep down the rest of us minions. I think it's incredibly difficult to 'work your way up' nowadays. Even those with university degrees are doing menial minimum wage jobs. It's incredibly difficult to make your own way now. The changes to WTC when Universal Credit comes in will see small businesses die, as they won't be able to get going (it's assumed you will earn at least the minimum wage after one year as well as other restrictions). so the 'big boys' will control all the workforce and will set their own terms. Just my take...

Saw this on doomsday preppers and thought it was fab. Probably not a practical solution for most of us, but some ideas could be useful...

Just been talking to my sister (who is a head in the sand type of person) about the Cyprus banking situation and she said if she had any savings she would buy premium bonds as they would be "safe", but that nothing like that could happen here anyway. Waste of breath to argue about pros and cons of the UK being Shangri La, but I did wonder if she had a point about premium bonds not being subject to a raid by government like a bank account?
