Hmm having experienced how difficult it is to get a child moved between sets, I wonder how much room there is in practice for these late developers to be moved. Obvious candidates, perhaps but probably falling well short of total freedom to reassign to where they are best suitedIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0

Someone asked how they define which bank accounts to take the money from, it was from all deposit accounts in Cypriot banks within Cyprus, including all those of foreigners, including the British forces stationed there.Because it is a three day holiday here the banks closed and did not reopen. (This is something I thought would happen in Greece, I remember mentioning it on here...if Greece was giving up they would close the banks on Friday evening and not reopen till they changed/devalued currency).
The Cypriot banks have not been sold to Greece but there was some kind of instant takeover of their branches within Greece. Details are sketchy but I do know its the Hellenic post office bank which has taken them over. This is strange as they are the main bank which is waiting to be sold off and recapitalized. The man in charge of the bank recapitalization resigned on Thursday before all this chaos emerged in the news. It stinks....The Cypriot government were supposed to vote on this tomorrow ( a huge holiday here) but they have postponed up due to the uproar. Three of the four parties are now saying they won't vote the measure in and the government, just elected in, could well fall.
The atmosphere here in Greece is highly charged. People are worried that their bank accounts here will be next and I absolutely think there is going to be a bank run as soon as the banks open on Tuesday. I also think there will be bank runs in other countries like Italy as people are worrying about what little money they have left being taken off them.We paid over 1200 euros in extra taxes last year and even got taxed on money we had already paid tax on in the UK. There was nothing we could do about it but pay.
Personally, I have given it a lot of thought over the last two years as a prepper. This thread and the support on here has given me chances to share my ideas and take in suggestions as to what we should consider should the **** hit the fan. We are already waist deep in it here in Greece......
Being clued up on what is happening all around me and through Europe as well has helped us both make some very wise decisions re our money. Most of it is in the UK and as things stand we only have a couple of hundred in euros and a cheque clearing in a sterling account that will pay our bills and mortgage with this month.
We are well stocked with water, food , fuel and goodness knows what else. We have all our meds for at least a few months and two means of transport...car and 2 scooters that are cheap to run and full of fuel.We have had two very serious discussions in the last two days and we are both in agreement that things are looking very bad and something has to give.....I think politicians are going to fall in rapid succession (and not just in Cyprus!) and the euro could well go down the drain. This is going to be the straw that broke the camel's back.
I think there may well be civil unrest but it will not be directed at us, but at the authorities and politicians. So we have decided that we are going to stick it out here no matter what happens around us. There is no point in leaving the house that most of our money is invested in. We are better off staying here and battling it out if we have to. This is still a wonderful country with amazing people but it is being brought to its knees.
Sorry for the rant, just thought I would explain what is really going on and how we are going to deal with it. Will keep you updated as things are going to change rapidly hour by hour. I have to say, Nigel Farage has made statements about the situation and he has my utmost respect for naming the game....long may he continue to do so!!!!“The superior man, when resting in safety, does not forget that danger may come. When in a state of security he does not forget the possibility of ruin.” Confucius (551 BC - 479 BC):A0 -

Just finished reading the rest of the thread and I had noticed the issue in Cyprus, really bad news. My mum drives me crazy as her response to stuff like this is oh terrible for those people, but it will never happen here argggghh. Why do some always assume it won't happen to them.
I remember reading an interview with someone who had lived through all the war in yugoslavia and he said they had lived a life pretty close to our western lives, kids at school, normal jobs, shopping for fun etc etc. Then within a matter of months people he had known for years were shooting at each other and him and his family. It changed from a "normal" civilised life to mad, horrific chaos almost overnight.
To assume that "stuff like that" only happens elsewhere is blinkered and illogical. Makes me want to prep even harder lol. I have even considered buying precious metals and burying them in the garden, which kind of links back hundreds of year to when britons buried their treasure when the norsemen/saxons hove into view. Trouble is these robbers know where all the cash is kept and can snatch it instantly.
I also think it makes no odds who is in power at the moment or who wins the next election. Its like p*ss*ng in the wind, whatever they do will not and cannot make any difference to the final outcome. I just hope its a financial slope we slide down with just a few bumps and bruises, not a bl**dy great crash.
Prep hard, keep safe.

Things are happening rather fast over there, goodness knows what is going on behind closed doors. Things I thought 'tin foil hattery' not long ago are today's reality.
One suggestion I will make to you if I may, it has been known in the past for governments to introduce capital controls to prevent money moving from one county to another, it would not surprise me if they did that again in these troubled times.
It may be worth you having a few months bills and living expenses within your country should that happen. It would at least give you some breathing space.0 -

Try these instead - 12" Paraffin Hurricane Camping Lantern Light.
BTW. Haven't seen one for a while, but they do a Paraffin Hurricane Lamp, where the top is a stove.
£4.10 is a good price but I found some even cheaper than that:

I've been looking into that Bio-Oil stuff which is vegetable-based but it's hella pricey compared to paraffin0 -
Cyprus governments tax on savings will cost us directly as the MOD are going to pay the service personnel whatever the Cypriots take from them. Shame it's come to this xMe, OH, grown DS, (other DS left home) and Mum (coming up 80!). Considering foster parenting. Hints and tips on saving £ always well received. Xx
March 1st week £80 includes a new dog bed though £63 was food etc for the week.0 -

We used to keep the paraffin container outside the back door (which in itself is ) when I was a child, and what is worse is that I used to regularly go and have a sniff of it as I loved the smell - double :eek:
2t - thank you for sharing your view of things - it is a great insight as to what could happen here or anywhere. I am starting to get OH on board that we need to give serious consideration to what we do regarding pensions and savings and we are planning to see a solicitor in the near future to talk about some plans we have to store savings away from banks. After that we may see a financial analyst. OH worked out that his current pension will have to see him living till about 80 to get back anything like he pays in - so we have frozen it (it is reasonably new anyway) and are considering our options regarding how to invest the money.
I am wondering if there might be a knock - on effect of bank runs, even to here.I wanna be in the room where it happens0 -

Hi all
Thanks for all the great info r.e. Cyprus and storm lamps.
I have just ordered a couple from the rainforest shop to add to our supplies (can't complain at 2 for a tenner including postage).
I have an uneasy feeling just now that hasn't left me for a few months, but the recent events do make me feel like whatever it is is getting nearer, time to batten down and prep harder me thinks.
Planted some potatoe today , didn't manage to get them all planted out as the hail and p***ing rain started so I gave up and put the kettle on:D.
Hope everyone is well as haven't managed to catch up more than the last few pages,
hugs to all
