They have already frozen the bank accounts and have blocked the amount they intend to take from being taken out by the owner of the account. I think Greece could be next in this little scheme. It's stealing in my view.... these people have already been paying massive taxes like the ordinary people have in Greece. I heard of an old man who had his last 300 euros taken out of his account by the tax man...now what is he supposed to do for food?

Still got bad weather here, cold and stormy with very high winds. Many houses and cars have been swept into the sea by a 10 meter storm surge in another part of Greece. I will try to find the link...

There are some videos on this link...its expected to stay like this for the next three days, all public holidays..

Pops, I don't see why olive oil would go up in price...its still grown on the same trees they have been growing it on for thousands of years...and labour is cheaper now with no minimum wage here in Greece...

    :) Evening all.

I'm halfway thru Last Light having acquired it as soon as the library opened. Very good stuff.

Been doing other things such as housework, shopping (inc Milton Liquid ;)) and one or two other bits and bobs.

 That business about taxing people's bank accounts in Cyprus is a pretty spin on what it truly is; the confiscation of private property without the owner's consent is called theft where I come from. Makes you want to keep your spondulicks under the mattress, doesn't it? Except that's the first place thieves would look.

Makes you wonder what else might be taxed; pantries, for example? Might we see some official coming around to frisk your household for tinned goods and decide that a certain number of cans of baked beans are excessive and should be redistributed?

Seems to me that these are just the times to prep harder and be more and more secretive about what you have and where you have it. I'm thinking about having a mini-stashette off-site in event of an emergency...............

Bedsit Bob, nice-looking selection of cooking and lighting options you have there. I've still not found a satisfactory windup lantern and am working towards candle-lanterns at the moment. Where do you source your paraffin, btw? Is it expensive? We used to use it back in the seventies at home for paraffin heaters and used to get it from the local ad long-since closed garage.

Keep safe, 2t, you certainly have a lot to put up with.......

I usually source my paraffin at Petrol Stations.

It's about £1-25 per Litre (£5 for a 4 Litre can), so fairly dear, but as I don't use it all the time (only during power cuts), it's not too bad.

Of course, you get light and heat from the Hurricane Lamps.

ETA: Is THIS the sort of wind-up lantern you are looking for?

:) Ta. One more question; back in the day, we'd take our own paraffin can up to the petrol station (on a trolley, natch). Do you take your own receptacle these days or do they sell it by the can?

  • I remember the old days, of taking a gallon can to the petrol station, and filling it (for 50p :p ) from a machine with a gallon capacity glass cylinder in it.

Indeed, I remember as a kid, the "Paraffin Man" (he sold other stuff too, but that's what we used to call him) would call in his lorry, with a big steel tank on the back, from which he would fill our 1 gallon metal can (think a Castrol GTX can painted red), which we would use to fill the paraffin heater we used to heat the kitchen.

    Nowadays, it's pre-packed in a plastic can. :(

:D Thanks. That's taken me right back to ye olden days. The machine was around the back of the petrol station in a sort-of wooden slatted shed.

Does paraffin have a finite shelf life, as I know petrol has and that diesel has, too, although longer than petrol?

There's no BBE date on the can I've got. :)

Even if I have to replace it every 5 years, it's not going to exactly bankrupt me.

EDIT: A quick Google suggests a minimum of 5 years, and that it should be OK in wick lamps (but not so much in jetted devices) well beyond that.

EDIT EDIT: Just Googled and, on average, a Hurricane lamp operating for 4 hours a day, will use 3 Litres of paraffin per month.

Funny you should say that about pantries.... every year we have to give the tax man all our receipts for the year, including itemised food, bills and any extras like cinema tickets and petrol for the car.....it should be about 75 percent of your income or you have to explain where the extra money came from....I kid you not..... I have two drawers full from this year alone.

I think the **** is going to hit the fan big style very shortly. The banks are closed in Cyprus till Tuesday but the president has to announce it to the people tomorrow then the parliament has to vote.......but it looks like it won't be that easy... I have just been sent this link...and if anything this site usually downplay things ...

    http://www.ekathimerini.com/4dcgi/_w_articles_wsite1_1_16/03/2013_488208

I have my emergency plans firmly in mind and we still have the stocks and supplies and a get out fast plan if we need one....
