Paraffin is smelly though.0

It's not all that smelly
The slight odour, when it burns, takes me back to my childhood, when we had a paraffin heater in the kitchen.0 -
We had a hardware shop in our village when I was a child, and I remember taking a jug to buy more paraffin for mum's lamps. The shop had something like a barrel, I suppose, where you put the jug underneath a spout and turned a tap to fill the jug - still love that smell now!
The stuff was pink, like very dilute blackcurrant juice!
I've been pricing up more bits and sorting my stores of various prepping things, and will be quietly adding to them. I agree with GQ about keeping schtum about how much we've stored away, and love the idea of a second, secret stashette!
THis afternoon I'm hoping to visit the camping shop I mentioned the other week, on the lookout for various lighting options, anything still in the sales that may be useful next winter (in terms of keeping warm/fed) or for when TSHTF.

Actually, in a fire, the gas canisters are far more dangerous, than a can of paraffin.0 -

I never discuss my emergency stores, with people who know me.0 -
Being alone I can stay secretive unless the landlord visits but I can make it look tidy...
Just been thinking parrafin might be available at a camping store that sell all things for camping, clothes and supplies etc..."A government afraid of its citizens is a Democracy. Citizens afraid of government is tyranny!" ~Thomas Jefferson

Same here. I live alone, so nobody knows what's in my cupboards, pantry, wardrobes etc., except me, and not even me sometimes.0 -

They're rather expensive BB.
Try these instead - 12" Paraffin Hurricane Camping Lantern Light.
BTW. Haven't seen one for a while, but they do a Paraffin Hurricane Lamp, where the top is a stove.0 -

Mrs L - I agree about comphrehensive education - I mean nowadays if a child grows up on a deprived estate it may never leave it, it goes to school round the corner, with the same people, no challenges.
I recently saw a news story about an acadamy school which was trying to find a middle way for schools.
I think it was on the local news. But basically they had 3 separate schools within the overall schools. They all had separate buildings and names/badges, but there were also shared areas and crossovers between the "schools". So one school aimed to provide a "grammer school like" experience, the best academic students were creamed off into this school. The other 2 were more like comprehesives with different specialities. BUT unlike the old system if a child was a late developer or discovered something they had a talent for there was the chance to move to a more appropriate "school" within the academy. Plus the kids did get to mix with different abilities and all still felt part of the same school, but the kids who were very talented got pushed and the kids with other talents had a place.
Sounded a great idea and the results they quoted suggested ALL 3 sets of students were thriving under the scheme. I think this may have been on our local news so somewhere in the northwest.
