With our library you can reserve a book even if they haven't got it and they will get it through Interlibrary loan for you. Used to be free but I think some LAs are now charging
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

    Hello Jayne C

Welcome aboard! They are a nice bunch here, and we are all learning together, though my current fetish is stocking up, and I am lacking in the skills department (apart from recent first aid course).

I have also been bobbing about on more serious prepper sites, hence the idea of using tights/condoms for less conventional things! Apparently, (unused!) tampax make good fire starters though I must admit I haven't put that into practice yet.....

    Good luck

If you want a shock on basic tea bag prices...they are imported and sell for 3.20 euros a box of 80 here...rip off eh? I use the Lidl tea bags, okay they aren't strong (I like weak tea and so does OH) but they are only 1 euro a box.

Have been missing in action again, we had two days of storms where we took it in turns to mop up the water running over the tiles in the house. Unfortunately its been blamed on unusual amounts of rain and ground water levels and there is nothing to do but let it dry out then seal the outside walls etc. The good news is that we only had drizzle today and it didn't come in and the next ten days are forecast to be dry and sunny.

In this country you have to have a health book under the national insurance. Mine is covered by my OH navy disability pension...but I had to take it in to get this years sticker on even though its covered anyway. The insurance people told me to go to the local council help office as they would do it, instead of queuing for days at the IKA office. I went and she kept me waiting three hours while she complained about it being a lot of form filling and having no paper for the photocopier. I pointed out that the insurance were telling people to go to her to make things easy. I had collected all the papers, she only needed to stamp the papers and send them on to get me the sticker. With my arm really hurting me and her complaining she finally reduced me to tears of desperation and I walked out. My husband struggled in (bad back) and she sorted it out in a few minutes.....no wonder this bloody country is on its knees....they should sack them all in public offices and replace them with someone who wants to do the job....

After that little farce I was desperate for some pain relief as the tablets the hospital gave me were not working. Four or five nights with no sleep as there was no comfortable way to lie with it twinging and hurting all down my arm and shoulder. So I went to see our GP here who is a great doctor. He played hell about not going before now when its hurting me so much and gave me acupuncture after the physio girl massaged it into relaxation. My first time for acupuncture and I was very impressed by it. It is now moving a lot easier and some of the worst pain has gone. Hope it lasts all night as I need some sleep!

I also got some more effective pain killers and muscle relaxants. He is going to ring me on Thursday to see if its any better, if not then I have to go for an MRI scan to see if its a torn tendon (which could mean an op on it!) It never rains but it pours......

I have to go to the police station this week to get a new residents permit...although according to my lawyer and the EU rules I do not need one to live here! The first one I got years ago you had to have a full medical, including blood tests for things like AIDS and STD's. I also had to pay for a medical certificate that said I was sane lol....with all this bureaucracy I sometimes wonder if I am sane or not. I was on the point of selling up and leaving this morning after all the hassle at the council office.

Sorry for the rant...must be the tablets lol

I went through my seed box yesterday and wanted to throw away some old seeds but thought twice, i guess I may as well just chuck 'em in and see what happens. I bought some dried peas the other day as Aylss Fowler reckons they grow perfectly well as pea shoots to add to salads.

They do indeed, though in the recent cold mine took a month to get big enough - and I threw them in a stir/fry/omelettey thing.

As for seeds, I'm going to leave a couple of everything I grow to go to seed, having heard about someone having rogue parsnips popping up for years :D

You are right Helen you need to see what your garden is happy to grow in certain places and reap the benefits. I decided to stop growing in pots the last 2 years and failed dismally. Im going back to the pots this year and putting my courgettes in a tyre stack nearer the house as they did exceptionally well there 3 years ago. Sneaky little beggars courgettes though, Dd's fella and I used to stand nattering on the patio and every couple of days picked a few courgettes while we were talking then 2 days later found a huge marrow on the plant. It couldnt have been missed as we were obsessed with the damn things:rotfl:

2T you have a rant hunny, sounds like a bu**er of a day. Lets face it if you can't let of steam here, where can you?

:p Contain your envy; my supersized blackcurrant bush acquired a supersized bevvy of snails (they hang on the undersides of the leaves where they're hard to see unless you're trying to pick the currants).

Some leaves had up to 3 big snails each. In one sesh I picked 50 bliddy snails out of that bush and crushed them all. and a few days later another 30-odd were back. After than, I kinda didn't feel like harvesting the blackcurrants.....:p

I don't mind snails - hate slugs though! At least snails have a handle .... Don't know that I could kill one! Need to toughen up as I read that a good way to deal with slugs is to go out with a torch and a bucket of water after dark .....

That is a lot of snails!!! Slime washes off though ... wouldn't stop me. :o
  • I have friends who collect their slugs up, freeze them and then bring them down to my chickens on a Friday... sounds utterly bizarre, but I gather it's not cruel to the slugs (they just kind of shut down like going to sleep) and the chickens go bananas for them - slug frappe is evidently their very favourite dish, and they polished off the last home-grown ones about 5 years ago. Secondhand slug (in egg form) is very tasty...
