BUTTERFLY mentioned seeds as stockpiling, well i have actually been snooping about today on the web as i was wanting to know more about storing them and apparently they can be frozen withtheacceptance of parsnips , something about they wont germinate.................there you go thatsmy bit of info for today xxx

I have been meaning to post on here re seeds for a while.

Good things are seeds that are NOT F1 hybrids. F1s do not produce offspring that are remotely like themselves. F1s also produce a bumper crop exactly x days after planting out;, which is fine if you want all your crops to ripen at the same time.

Even better non-F1 Hydrids (open-pollinated) are generally a lot lot cheaper than F1s.

Most seeds can be safely stored in a dry (add a silicon sachet and check it regularly) rodent proof box kept in a cool place.

On the other hand I found some peas that were 8 years old and all bar 15 sprouted, giving me a pea glut.

Peas, French beans, lettuce and most tomatoes are very very easy to save as home grown seed and keep true; curcubits need a bit of care but are reasonably easy. Brassicas are a nightmare.

:p There are an awful lot of people in this world who can't spell warranty, for some reason.

RAS, I've heard and confirmed from my own experience that the bigger seeds (peas, all kinds of beans) store well and germinate reliably after many years. Lottie pal had good germination with 11 y.o. lettuce and I chucked a lot of flowerseeds into the ground and just raked them and most grew just fine, and were anything from 6-12 years expired.

Read once about a medieval home which was refurbished and the misc organic carp used to pack the walls between the timbers was chucked on the garden. After 700 years as a building material, the stray field beans among the other stuff germinated.

And wheat from a pharoah's tomb has germinated.

Carrots would be absolute burgers as they have very poor germinations at the best of times. I don't bother with brassicas as my allotment has hot and cold running woodpigeons and they get up earlier than I do.

If the SHTF, I know how to wrench a (dead) pigeon apart barehanded in under 3 mins and have made pie in the middle of the woods. They eat other people's brassicas and I eat them, that's the plan.

I am trying to persuade t'committee that we should have cull - they have started stripping fruit bushes and soft fruit trees as well. There was mention of a new show category "any dish made from wood pigeon." Could a few entries:).

  • Hello all

I see you are all prepping madly....

Gack! After reading the links, my anxiety drove me to eat the last piece of emergency chocolate, it was the links that did it, honest!

Luckily, OH agrees we are doing the right thing prepping, so we are still stocking up as we go. Funny though that it tends to be more comfort/stodge food like creamed rice, fruit, sponge pudding, custard, baked beans, not sensible food like vegetables, pulses, etc... ;) Guess I will have to redress the balance (sigh).

At least Ddog is less fussy, she just opens her little mouth to anything we have in our hands, useful when giving her a worm tablet! And not much left-overs in our house.

Finally bought bottled water for freezer. As recommended on here (thanks all), it's a multi-function supply: filling the spaces to make freezer run effectively, emergency (cooled) water supply, helping to keep freezer cold in a power cut, great to take one on a day out (when it's warmer!) for chilled drink.

I am also adding old tights to my EDC and BOB for multiple uses:

    Scrunch up small.
Cheap thermals for us both, dry quickly.
Soft ties for bags within rucksacks.
Good as soft ties on plants (cut 'rings' from legs, apply in figure of 8 to plant and support).
Handy storage - hang things in legs and hang these off branches, etc.
Emergency extending bags for foraging stuff - mushrooms, berries, nuts, etc.
    Slightly scary balacalavas/bandanas/neck warmers.
    Emergency dog lead.
Ties for first aid e.g. slings, etc.
Strainers for food/water (assuming they were washed first).
    Making knots!
Anything else you could use rope for, but, lightweight only.
    Simple fish net traps.
    I could go on.

Oh. And also condoms. Not for their original purpose, but, e.g. storing small items to keep water tight like kindling, char cloths, emergency water containers, etc.

Keep well, and keep prepping all. :)

    Hi all,

Been lurking for a while and thought I'd say hello...

This made me giggle, thanks GQ :rotfl:

and BBB I don't wear tights (well not nylon ones - they make me itch. I do have a few pairs of wooly ones) but am thinking of getting some just for the other uses you've mentioned....

I'm more an aspirational prepper I think, not got much in the way of stores but am trying to up my skills level and become more self sufficient - reduce my reliance on money as it seems it may become defunct at some point anyway:(. I'm interested in the transition movement and have done a permaculture design course, so am more along the lines of adjusting my lifestyle rather than stockpiling stuff that will run out eventually - not that I think that's wrong and I would like to build some stocks too...

Have learned so much from you guys already and look forward to joining in more now I've stuck my head above the parapet so to speak:D

BBB, condoms are part of military issue, I've been told. They can be used as emergency water bladders (stabilised in something a bit more robust like a sock), used to keep water out of the barrel of a rifle, indeed to hold other things against water.

I have even *whispers* heard that some people use them for sexual purposes.

If planning for non-intimate emergencies, one is recommended to use the plain kinds. Just sayin'.

I was just thinking the lubricated ones would make things a bit slippy - but how would I know :o

I went through my seed box yesterday and wanted to throw away some old seeds but thought twice, i guess I may as well just chuck 'em in and see what happens. I bought some dried peas the other day as Aylss Fowler reckons they grow perfectly well as pea shoots to add to salads.

I must admit my trip to Mr T today left me very down. I now have to grab any chance to pop in a SM as Oh is basically housebound so when DD offered me a trip I went. The guy doing the ys's was trying very hard to p*ss people off, going very slowly and though I did a couple of laps I gave up. Meat is just too expensive in there and we don't have a butchers anywhere locally other than the market which is very low quality meat. Am going to try and get a couple of ham shanks tomorrow and possibly a couple of chickens and stretch them as much as poss so we are covered for a week or so.

You can often pick up tights in the Cs's and as they are not for wearing the strange colours wont matter.

Cushelle sent me a voucher for a free pack of loo rolls so I was found opening the mail going 'whoop whoop' but really I dont get out much - see earlier part of post :rotfl:
