:p Contain your envy; my supersized blackcurrant bush acquired a supersized bevvy of snails (they hang on the undersides of the leaves where they're hard to see unless you're trying to pick the currants).

Some leaves had up to 3 big snails each. In one sesh I picked 50 bliddy snails out of that bush and crushed them all. and a few days later another 30-odd were back. After than, I kinda didn't feel like harvesting the blackcurrants.....:p
    :eek::eek::eek:

I'm just working out what fruit to plant. Now you've freaked me out.
Thinks...... Snails are protein ....... Sure I've read that many of our garden ones are descended from snails brought over to farm as food by the Romans. Ok, next prepping skill is - learn French snail recipes:T

On a more practical note, for all you Scottish Preppers, especially Mardatha jus taken delivery of a book on vegetable growing up north: Fruit and Vegetables for Scotland, what to grow and how to grow it.

Just what I needed. Clear timetable of what to do when in a northern garden, best varieties of loads of different veg for windy, wet climes. Even mentions what does well in Shetland and Orkney so there's hope for me yet.

    Hope this helps.

Better stop now and tackle the housework.

Thanks for all the great ideas on here.

    Hi all,

Been lurking for a while and thought I'd say hello...

This made me giggle, thanks GQ :rotfl:

and BBB I don't wear tights (well not nylon ones - they make me itch. I do have a few pairs of wooly ones) but am thinking of getting some just for the other uses you've mentioned....

I'm more an aspirational prepper I think, not got much in the way of stores but am trying to up my skills level and become more self sufficient - reduce my reliance on money as it seems it may become defunct at some point anyway:(. I'm interested in the transition movement and have done a permaculture design course, so am more along the lines of adjusting my lifestyle rather than stockpiling stuff that will run out eventually - not that I think that's wrong and I would like to build some stocks too...

Have learned so much from you guys already and look forward to joining in more now I've stuck my head above the parapet so to speak:D

    Hello Jayne C

Welcome aboard! They are a nice bunch here, and we are all learning together, though my current fetish is stocking up, and I am lacking in the skills department (apart from recent first aid course).

I have also been bobbing about on more serious prepper sites, hence the idea of using tights/condoms for less conventional things! Apparently, (unused!) tampax make good fire starters though I must admit I haven't put that into practice yet.....

    Good luck

BBB, condoms are part of military issue, I've been told. They can be used as emergency water bladders (stabilised in something a bit more robust like a sock), used to keep water out of the barrel of a rifle, indeed to hold other things against water.

I have even *whispers* heard that some people use them for sexual purposes.

If planning for non-intimate emergencies, one is recommended to use the plain kinds. Just sayin'.

Lol! I must remember to ask the shop assistant that!:rotfl:

I was just thinking the lubricated ones would make things a bit slippy - but how would I know :o

    Lol! So I have heard!;)

You can often pick up tights in the Cs's and as they are not for wearing the strange colours wont matter.

Good idea I know where the next ones are coming from.......

Cushelle sent me a voucher for a free pack of loo rolls so I was found opening the mail going 'whoop whoop' but really I dont get out much - see earlier part of post :rotfl:

Me neither, the furthest I travel is to another web-site.

I recall seeing a program where they said the snails here are indeed the same variety that the romans introduced and the french eat now, but you have to "purge" them to clean out the gut before you can eat them. I just wish I could face eating them as they would be a great free source of protein. I have heard you can buy a "snail farm" and breed your own as well.

I think I saw the same programme. Dimly remember it was one of Hugh FW ones. They fed the snails oatmeal for two days to purge them. Which reminds me, haven't watched the new Fish Fight yet. Off to 4OD I go.

Oh Rosetta that books looks good - but its pretty dear for me. I need to think about it or wait until a cheaper used copy comes on. TY for that though, the reviews are brilliant.

I have eaten snails - once. It was on my list of things I had to try. They were OK but I wouldn't bother again. Bit like chewy mushrooms. No taste in themselves, all the flavour came from the garlic butter. Rather have some garlic bread
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

Why not suggest it to your local library. Mine are always delighted to get suggestions, and once something you've suggested comes in you get it first.
