  • I was in Sainsbugs today (needed teabags) and all the Basics range has gone up, not just my lovely teabags. Even the lady on the checkout was moaning about it and says it's disgraceful the amount they've increased it by. She reckons it's because more people are buying it ... more buys = more increase!
    Normal people worry me.
  • Hi everyone, I've just been having a quick browse of this thread - want to go back and read all the rest now! - just for info, if anyone is stocking up on tins, my DD (chip off the old block) told me that savers ricepud is now 12p in Mr M's, and their savers tinned custard is also down 10p to 17p. Handy for a quick pud - I've stocked up on a few today.

I'm going to have a go at a 'haybox' (modern style) and make more use of the woodburner - wish it was in the kitchen! If the time really comes when oil is unaffordable we will have to ditch the oil rayburn (not used now anyway because too expensive, oil just used for water and ch when v. cold) and replace with another wood or multi fuel stove.
I'll report back on the haybox!

When I mentioned the drinking champagne with the shepherd's pie..the same programme said that custard is popular again...I suspect all our "puddings" are again and that also means good old Angel Delight, trifles and so on.

Even Artic Roll is popular again.

Anyone else hear the interview on Radio 4 with the NFU chap? He said that he reckoned inflation was 30 - 40% with regard to animal feeds etc., and that we should expect further price rises on beef and pork..... I find myself buying more and more veggie cookbooks!
  • Oh joy BB that will be something to look forwards to but only to be expected really after the disastrous growing (or not as the case may be!) season of last year. They said yields were down on everything didn't they? Perhaps in true OS Style we could collectively come up with a recipe for 'Fresh Air Soup' with which to sustain ourselves in the future? Cheers Lyn xxx.
  • Mar what's your plan for hot water? I tried letting the stove out one year but after a couple of weeks I realised it was costing me more to re-light it each day than the half bag a week to keep it ticking over low - loads of hot water still too.

Am very interested in the scottish-specific veg growing book mentioned somewhere earlier - i've been looking at it on amazon, but cannot decide if it's worth the money? going to have to make a better fist of veg growing this year.

I'm feeling like I have no safety-net at the mo with one thing and another, so my priority is to increase my personal security in any way I can as a form of self-protection - i'm sure the worst is yet to come.

And now back to the bad news..
It is being reported that some meds are running low in Greece.

A terrible situation - I hope it is not coming to us. It's not a matter of being easily able to stock up either as it seems we are talking prescription meds.

There have been shortages for well over a year of prescription meds but the reason is complex. The pharmacies buy them in, then people get them on prescription, but the government has not paid the bills for the drugs on prescription for over 18 months and the chemists can no longer buy them,.... because they have no credit left with the government not paying them back. In many cases the chemists have to refuse prescriptions so you have to pay in full even though some of us are paying 400 euros a month health insurance cover. The hospitals have not been dispensing meds for the last two years...they give you a prescription and you have to go and get it from the pharmacy. I had to buy a good sling for my arm when the bit of bandage dropped to pieces that they had given to me.At the moment the hospital here has an appeal out for sheets and towels as they have none to use.....

None of the money from the loans is going to things like the health service or people. It is all going straight back to the banks to pay the interest installments on the loans. The only reason the country has not crashed is that they are using all the money people had saved and the extra taxes we are all having inflicted on us every month whether we have the money to pay or not.

I spent most of today in the company of various good looking young policemen....trying to get my certificate of residence renewed.:D The policeman who should renew it is away on leave till 10th March so I went to the main office. They told me the office was shut till 3 and to go back. So bought lunch out, went to see friends then went back...shut.....they are not open till tomorrow. So rather than queue again for nothing I am waiting for the one on leave to come back, as that office is nearer to home (and in a pretty resort). I just can't be bothered any more with it.

The good news is that my shoulder and arm are much better. I still have the kinetic tape on my arm but the pain has decreased to about half of yesterday and I have much better movement. I slept like a log as the muscle relaxant turned me to jelly :rotfl: The doctor is phoning me tomorrow so I can tell him how it is...it looks like I may not need the MRI scan after all. Just as well, as I can't have it till my health book is back and the nice policeman:T

We have yet another severe storm warning for around Monday. This one actually alarmed me as it was in Italian when I got it and on translation it said Spain then Italy were going to get ''bombed''by such heavy rain that the South would be underwater...then it would move on to Greece  Although I live on top of the mountain I don't like the sound of either being bombed with water from a storm or even worse, being underwater!!! At the moment our wall is not leaking water in...long may it last:o

I seem to hear the farming programme each day(once that would have never happened)and for various reasons the other day they said(again)prices are rising on vegetables too but still cheaper than meat etc...Am I surprised? sadly not.

As I said before even the campaign Change For Life has very few recipes that you could say are good for those on a limited budget.

They did a better job during the war and when food was rationed...
