  • HH I remember Liberty Bodices with all those little white buttons, nightmare when you're little yes?

GQ I think everyone including children were expected to pull their weight back in the earlier part of the 20th century and use muscles and bones in whatever task they were set to. It built stronger frames and characters and as there were so few modern 'aids' folks just got on and did what had to be done. Also they had the techniques to do so, i.e lifting dustbins one handed, without doing damage to theirselves. It would amaze some of our teenagers who indulge in 30 minute showers with shower gel and shampoo twice a day just how much effort had to be put into bath night when it was the tin bath in the kitchen. Boil the water in buckets, have the bath using soap to wash you and your hair too, bail out, mop up, put the bath back outside, sit by the fire to dry hair, and the thought of being 4th into the water would give them nightmares, but it wasn't as bad as it sounds was it? Well we survived Ok anyway. Different world, which I feel we might just be getting back again, I know where I can get a new tin bath too!!!!! Cheers Lyn xxx.

Well the storm that hit Athens yesterday has managed to miss us so far, we seem to be right on the edge of it as we can see the storm clouds in the distance. It has been warm and sunny here today at 19 degrees so I made the most of it and went out as well as doing my washing. The wind is increasing now so will probably stay dry tonight.

It seems that the UK got a bit more snow today than most predicted. I got a real moody weather forecaster on my facebook complaining I have no right to forecast anything as I am an unpaid amateur...so I pointed out it was sour grapes as he got it wrong and shot me down in flames the other day.....he hated the fact that I said I could ''feel it in my water'' as my gran used to say...

I actually think there is more to come yet for the UK..I don't mean now (which I said would happen weeks ago) but in the coming weeks. I think you may well have some more towards the end of next week, around 6/7th of March and later in the month, between maybe 17th and 24th. I am just going on the European computer models and instinct. I think March could be a very snowy cold month for the UK with blizzards further into the month.

We could be getting very interesting weather ourselves in Greece as the prediction models are showing a real nasty storm over us from tomorrow night into Monday. Have had to empty the water tank under the house which could not cope with the sheer volume of water we are getting in the cloud bursts...hopefully it will be empty by the time the next deluge gets us!

Having problems with roads and hillsides collapsing here...if we get bad storms on Monday I am think we may have some very expensive road rebuilding to do....and with no money in the coffers its not going to happen anytime soon.

Thought you might like to see this supercell storm cloud photographed over Greece this afternoon, they are the type that bring tornadoes

I had laser eye surgery, and having colleagues in some of the most internationally respected ophthalmic institutions in the UK my research was fairly thorough .... Age has an important factor here as we will ALL WITHOUT FAIL become long sighted as you get older. So you could do this, and then in a couple of years need glasses for reading etc

Also chose a surgeon who does it a A LOT and if you have dodgy eyes (like me) then make sure this person does weird and wonderful cases not just the standard ones .... Those off the high street are not always qualified ophthalmic surgeons but done a conversion course

You tend to yet what you pay for, but don't forget this is a SURGICAL procedure and so IS NOT WITHOUT RISK one of which is you could be blinded.

On a slightly different note. Blinking cold here and snowing but not really settling thank goodness.

The muscles thing makes me smile, ornamental muscles is a term I have heard before. There is the Muscle Mary gym on Brighton seafront which exemplifies this! Some of the strongest people I know are wiry little so and so's with not an ounce of fat on them ..... But trust me you do not need more than one to get stuff shifted!

Medical advances and other technology has changed our lives, and there are things we don't want to go back to, but things like antibiotics may be closer to their ends that we may like .....

We are prepping hard here as DH been given the big R notice from work , it never rains but it pours

:( ((((missrlr)))) really sorry to hear of your DH's redundancy. Did you have any warning at all or was it just sprung on him? Thank goodness he has a preptastic missus in his corner.

2tonsils, thank you for both those links. The supercell cloud was awesome and I shall be looking for a hole to hide in, should I see one of those.

The ability to recognise the various types of cloud formations and what the foretell is a very useful one, and is mentioned sometimes in books on surviving in the wilderness. And, in a changeable maritime climate like the UK, very applicable to us going about our everyday business.

In an earlier version of my life, I used to do car boot sales most weekends. I'd regularly be standing in the back garden of that house, turning to study the sky at first light, calculating the amount of moisture in the air as it moved against my face, estimating if it'd stay dry and for how long.

One day we were at an open air sale and I'd been weather watching for hours, trying to get the maximum amount of selling time without risking getting stuff wet. Timed it nicely; the heavens opened in a deluge just as we were pulling out of the gate. Sometimes you hit the sweet spot...........

Been oot and aboot today and having the Computer Wizard gazing into the PC's tower. Motherboard in good nick (she's 10) but my CPU fan ailing and gonna be replaced on Monday.

Onward and upwards, steady as she goes.
Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Oh yes I remember the gas, horrible smell, I was always sick afterwards, prolifically!
I was born in 1951 in a very rural part of Lincolnshire, we had a tin bath in the coal shed, an outside toilet, crispy toilet paper, no central heating, no hot water, no electric upstairs, damp bedding, 3 mile walk to school & back, liberty bodices, nightdresses that went up in flames, chickens at the bottom of the garden, bus once a week on market day, oh the joys!

A few years ago we had a caretaker at work, big daft lad in his early 20s, went weightlifting but wouldn't carry a box of paper for me, they weigh 15k, went jogging but wouldn't get off his arris unless forced, then moaned about the cost of his personal trainer!

I never had gas at the dentists, in fact the first dentist I ever went to didn't give gas or injections for fillings.

So the first time I had a filling, there was no pain relief at all:eek:

It seems a bit barbaric now, but anything I have done at the dentist now doesn't seem to bad.

I can also report that tin baths, outside loos and no central heating were a feature of my 60's childhood.

But, as I hadn't experienced anything else, I just got on with it, I certainly don't recall feeling hard done by or deprived.

Weather wise, the east wind has set in now, and that's always the worst direction for Kent, as the wind whistles in from the coldest parts of Europe.

My birthday is March 15th, and normally there is a hint of spring by then. From what 2T predicts, I could be having a winter birthday this year.

missrlr sorry to hear your news about DH's job, hopefully something will turn up

  • 2T, I appreciate your reports of the situation in Greece, it's a vivid illustration of events not widely reported in the UK press. I came across this on a New Zealand website and thought it might be of interest:

Iv'e had to have a lie down coz someone mentioned dentists and gas. Oh my!!

I went to a museum a goodly while ago and they had an old dentist caravan just like the one my fist school dentist had with a belt driven drill.

My DD's who were school age thought it was something from a prison camp.
