:) My parents are raving fans of their Y*xTr*x which I bought for them, me and my brother for Xmas 2010 after we'd had that appalling weather earlier that month.

We didn't need them in 2011 but they have come into their own in the past couple of weeks and may do so again, although I'm in that part of England which went from snowy to green a few days ago when overnight rain melted all the snow.

Weather here is mild for the time of year with what I call a rollicking breeze. Excellent drying weather if I had some outdoor space to dry things in. I commend them, or something similar; every little helps keep you upright.

It has turned very cold here tonight and feels like it might get down to freezing...the temperature really dropped as soon as the sun went down. I think we may be getting the deep freeze a lot earlier than we expected. Pleased I ordered our wood to be delivered on Friday, though I am worried about a shortage as many have no other form of heating here. There are likely to be a few food shortages (imports) as the seamen and ferries are on strike for the next three days and the farmers are blockading the roads to stop lorries moving around the country....

Back in 2010 we had reported temperatures down to -20 and day temperatures to -18 degrees.

We just wrapped up extremely warm and had extra blankets piled everywhere. Its was like that for about 4 months on and off.

The cold weather affected the electricity lines by freezing them and blowing down the lines. It was awful, especially when you don't have a gas fire and the combi-boilers run off electric. We hated it.
We loved the snow though, it was quite scary when the supermarkets started to run out of fresh food and bread:eek:.

The wind was horrendous last night, ds2 got in just before it started really lashing it down.
    Thanks for the update 2tonsils:)

Hi all, been lurking and not posting for a bit, life's been manic here, but getting back track OS-wise. Will be jobless by March so battening down the hatches, literally as well, by the looks of the weather. Thanks, 2tonsils, for the heads-up!

In that bad weather of 2010 our boiler packed up for a few weeks, just during the coldest spell, we managed but it brought back memories of the cold winters of our childhoods! We put old towels at the foot of all the doors, HWBs, extra layers in bed and during the day, lots of comfort food to warm us from inside - you do cope, but if I hadn't been prepared (thanks childhood and MSE! :D) it would have been harder.

It's been blowing a gale the last couple of days, so off to secure door curtains, etc., tomorrow, sort out the woollies, and hunker down if and when the weather worsens. We're in the lee of the Pennines here, so sometimes forecasts are unpredictable for us, but am listening to you lot and my nose - it smells like there's trouble ahead! :rotfl:

Just in case anyone can't find those specifically, a reminder that there are different makes going by different names, different types and a range of prices. The neighbour on one side has that type (but not that make) and the neighbour on the other side has the same type as me but a different make (and price).
They all carry out the same function and we all swear by them - I think I might do a controlled experiment comparing different types/prices :rotfl:In any case it's a good idea to have 2 or even 3 sets in ones 'preps' as none of them will last forever.

:) Definately, I have seen several variations in use and offered for sale. I also spotted the YTs at a Goo Oootdoors reduced to £7.50 last spring (paid £13.50 for mine a couple of months before grr!) so that might be worth bearing in mind if money's too tight to mention.:)

Just a quick update before I go to the gym and pick up my shopping early (the ferries/truckdrivers/farmers are all on strike for a few days..and the electric joins them for Thursday /Friday.....it means no deliveries to the island so going to stock up on fresh fruit and veg...I have the rest.

The storm system they thought was going to hit Scotland hard on Friday appears to be veering further south and now could hit the midlands/south hard. I will get updates later today but the winds will be hurricane force bringing huge waves to coastal areas, torrential rain and the chance of some heavy snowfall should the temperature drop like they expect it to.

Freezing here last night but sunny and dry this morning...I need to get my washing on the line ..it will freeze dry it!!

I hear that there are some that cause problems if say you go into a shop from an icy outside and you may find you skid on the studs so would need to take them off, others you don't need to(someone said those kind are available on Amazon)but I don't know enough about these items you put on shoes.

I must think of getting some myself.
