Well, if anyone's short of reading material, I found something while snowed in last week that's kept me going for ages - you can download for free the first three chapters of something called ipermies - it's about surviving even if you live in a city, because it's not always practical for everyone to move to the country and grow vegetables:
http://www.ipermie.net/ It's long, just the three chapters, and round about page 252 (told you I've been busy!) there's a lot on food and food storage and preparation.

Apologies if you're all way ahead of me on this one! And hope you all still have electricity to read by - it's stormy out there.

Someone just explained to me that its the low barometric pressure which decreases the amount of oxygen available ...when it drops suddenly (this storm is very low) then you experience shortness of breath...or feel like you suddenly can't breathe at all....scary stuff Fuddle. No doubt the doggie felt it as well.

I am reading reports on current weather conditions on facebook, written by the people experiencing them. The midlands has some supercell storms around that could well lead to tornadoes. The wind and rain in some places is just horrendous. In some places it could last all day tomorrow so it might be worth bearing that in mind if you are planning tomorrow's activities.

There is another big storm on the way for Friday...ish.....the exact timing is not known yet but it looks worse than today's weather on the prediction maps.

Stay safe and warm folks, if any news crops up I will post it on here.

Nooooooooooo!!!!! I don't wanna Tornadoe! I'm on top of a hill in the midland's and I'v got to see the doc tomorrow.

The UK is in the middle of this map, the numbers on the map are the forecast pressure on the barometer.....the colours are the predicted temperatures......to give you an idea.....the royal blue colour is minus 24 degrees.......and the black is much colder. Even if the temperatures moderate it will still be bone numbingly cold around that time. I am going to prep for it....... http://img.meteogroup.com/meteo/gfs/Europe/2013012800/Europe_2013012800_thgt500_372.png

How the hell do you prep for minus 24 in the UK, I assume that is unheard of here.

Pha, that's not too bad. Multiple layers is the key. Scarves over face job. Keep as much skin covered to reduce risk of frostbite.

You'll know if it's -20 or colder. That's when you can feel the hair in your nostrils stand up.

My anti-freeze is good to -45 and it's never let me down. Tonight is supposed to be -23 before windchill (and windchill is the killer), so I'll just get the Collie to sleep on the bed for a while to warm it up.

Do you have a collie then wondercollie?
My poor collie missed out on her last walk yesterday because when it started turning black and thundering, I turned tail, ran back home, drew all the curtains and cowered till it was over.
I'm amazed at those who can stand at the window watching every lightening flash. I'm a wuss and thunder storms scare the bejeezus out of me

brrrr wondercollie and 2tonsils - the coldest climate I've ever been in was Iowa dec/jan 2009/10 - I cant remember how low it dropped but we had frozen nostril hair regularly and if you had wet hair outta the shower it was frozen by the time you got to the car!

    hope everyone is ok x
