Evenin Preppers, cor what a kerfuffle I'm just on to say I hope I haven't been offensive to anyone, I hate injustices and I always want people to be amicable. I hope also that I haven't been patronising as it was not my intention to do so! I'm off now to feed DH who has driven home from DD1 in all that holiday traffic and is kn-tired out and I will join him in a glass of vino cos I feel as if I need one. Will read for a while but not post. Lyn.0

I don't view it as scaremongering, just planning. I'm not spending loads either, just a few £1 shop bits and extra bits added to the shopping.
One thing though... we have lots of candles but an electric cooker. So if there was a power problem (we've had 48 hours with no elec), then there is nothing to boil a kettle on. We also live in a flat and so I'm not sure whether we are allowed to store gas cannisters....
Has anyone used those solid fuel cooker things? Are they worth it or should we just burn a shed?
I'm looking for cheap ways to ease the inconvenience if it happens again - (though I did take the contents of my freezer to mum's and used her gas cooker to cook dinner)
We tried tea lights in a grill pan but it took forever to boil water! Is one of those solid fuel things going to be any quicker, or should I look at a really cheap saucepan so it takes the heat through quicker?
Thanks.working on clearing the clutterDo I want the stuff or the space?0 -
Don't worry Lyn, I certainly didn't see it that way.
I'll hold my hand up and say I'm not preparing for zombies, nor for any apocalyptic event. I don't think I'd last long in such a scenario. But I read with interest other's preparations even if I won't be getting involved. I'm preparing for a minor weather event or some such short term thing, and I will get just enough supplies for that (although probably too many tea bags).0 -
I LOVE this thread :smileyhea0

I live with my parents who don't want a stockpile of anything and there isn't really much free room. If I had space I think I would have 50 of everything - preparedness hoarder. I have 6 tins of tomato soup though!
I'd want you on my team - I'd use you as [STRIKE]bait [/STRIKE]a diversionary tactic whilst I got away.

Oh and thanks for whoever mentioned having go bags for their pets, was talking to a friend who said they were planning their go bag but had no idea what they would do about their dogs. I suggested a pet go bag with some food etc and take them to wherever she may have to go. She felt much better at this suggestion as others had suggested leaving the dogs behind.
I view this all as planning.
Neighbor just up the road was caught storing imitation firearms and explosives... put into mental health care, but just the other day the police were back there again.... If we have to be evacuated because someone of unsound mind wants to blow up the street, then I wanna know that we have what we need to go and crash anywhere, be it with friends, or in a sports hall type place, or wherever they send us.
If we have more power cuts then I wanna be prepared, with ways to boil water and have food and hot water bottles.working on clearing the clutterDo I want the stuff or the space?0 -
I love this thread ! Why do some people feel this inner compulsion to sneer? If they don't want to prep or get panicky then they don't need to read it - it's not compulsory
My son has a Kelly Kettle as they go camping a lot and its awesome and I want one ..
My preps for tonight seem to involve eating Smarties and knitting meself a sock
I don't know why but I have found out talking to people "in real life" they are not laughing at the idea of storing food and being prepared and some are now thinking of doing something similar...for whatever the reason..."A government afraid of its citizens is a Democracy. Here's why I prep: my work is seasonal. Over the summer I have very little money coming in. My preps keep me afloat and mean that I only have to buy fresh foodstuffs, which keeps the grocery bill down. It has nothing to do with zombies and everything to do with avoiding an overdraft!
Also, I suffer from depression, and in the winter I have Seasonal Affective Disorder. I can usually manage to drag myself in to work, but I have little energy left over. On those sort of days, it's a relief to know I can get something from my storecupboard and not have to face the crowds at Asda.
It's also meant I have been able to help some of my less better-off neighbours when they've been in a crisis with no money left for food.
I think it's sensible to have some basic preps and to learn to do various things by yourself (knitting, sewing, cooking from scratch etc) as you never know when unemployment, illness, floods or powercuts are going to strike.
If people want to take it further and start digging escape routes down through the patio and out through the sewers that's up to them ....- but you only have to look at what's happened in Greece to see how hard it can be when an economy falters.

Angel-Jenny, you could perhaps get some water purification tablets, a small camping stove and maybe a storage box with basic food items in (keep it under your bed?). Just easy cook stuff like noodles, dried milk, teabags, a bag of sugar. Some candles and matches and a torch. None of this would take up much room but you would then have the stuff you needed to get through a powercut, at least. A 'go bag' with a change of underwear, some toiletries, medication, important documents would be quite small too.Aspire not to have more but to be more.

Most of us are preparing for normal life events...life can be ticking along reasonably ok and change in seconds...
Don't disappear for long Lyn...I nearly went went I felt I was being targeted and then I thought "S** It!" If I go who has won and there are so many views/opinions...
Losing jobs, illness, weather problems, power cuts, income reduction, price of food going up, utilities, rent, CT, BT increasing nothing outrageous and unusual...I LOVE this thread :smileyhea
It can be a bit daunting Fruball but this thread has a point and the fact so many join in shows that it is of interest...and of course we may have many "Lurkers" who read but decide not to post..."A government afraid of its citizens is a Democracy.
