So glad you said this - if I was prepping for a real end of the world scenario all I'd want is a quick and painless way to take me and me nearest and dearest out of the situation...I've read The Road....People seem not to see that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character.

I live in one of the most inhospitable parts of the country in some sense and we experienced 3 hurricanes in 9 months last year and the entire town was cut off by a freak snowstorm. I plan for emergencies in that I can cope in a powercut or period of ill health where we couldn't get to the shops, feed my family well for a few weeks (though I can't imagine having to do so for more than a few days even in worst case scenario), and I keep a wee bit of cash at home in case of a bank/atm problem. I am just struggling to see the need for huge stockpiles of food and water, expensive gadgets and the ability to carry out some of the skills listed above. Anyway, I was only curious as to the scenarios being envisaged on here. As Caterina says, it's a diverse bunch of people on OS.
I'm with you on the Armageddon situation, but you don't want to be eaten by zombies, it's a horrible way to go.:p
I wonder if we worry more now about snow and hurricanes and such, because of course I remember the snow of 60 something, and the 80's hurricane and heavy snows. I was in work on 2 of the snow occasions, first one my friend and I walked home in deep snow, second time I had to leave my car and walk home, and in the hurricane I was calling a farm shop to ask if I could still collect the potatoes I ordered  They said no. It was not a good idea. :rotfl:What I'm saying is we got about, and even the snow of 2010 I was out driving. because I had to.
I take what I need from threads and there have been some very good ideas that I can use, but I won't be buying many gadgets unless they are mega cheap or I can find in a boot sale or CS.
I got a small as new bread maker from a boot sale for £3 so very pleased. And I have a head torch now as it's dark around here at night plus when I'm popping out to the cats as it can be very late and no street lights, it will be useful. I think having water sterilising tabs are useful.
And wellies as I am in a flood zone.
The Kelly kettles look useful if you have no other source of heating water and food, and were out of power and a bit less scary than the gas ones, but I won't be buying one as they cost too much right now, however I will stock up on wood for my wood burner instead which will heat the house and cook if I put a pan on the top!
Ultimately, I think each person should take responsibility for themselves and the preparedness (is it a word?) they want to pursue. No-one has to follow suit, but you can read or not, adapt what you read or not, and make decisions that suit you and your family...not anyone else's.0 -

I started to watch the film that was on not so long ago, I may have recorded it, but I couldn't [STRIKE]bare[/STRIKE] bear to watch it to the end. I'm planning on having a good bottle of whisky...or two...0 -
HJ - I think that's all the rest of us have, I certainly don't have a huge stockpile of anything, or the latest must have gadget, we just don't have that kind of income. What I do have is to help us through any possible circumstance from being snowed in (we are in a village on a road that doesn't go anywhere else) and the local shop running short of produce to there being another flu scare and me not wanting to go into town for a few weeks just in case. I don't have anything I don't use - we have the kelly kettle for convenience as we spend a lot of time on the allotment, we have an OzPig outdoor stove because that's our idea of fun. I don't even have an electric kettle. just a good old whistler for the hob - in fact my last purchase of a gadget was a food processor from a boot fair for £5 to chop up apples for our home made cider.
The skills are just something I have aquired out of interest in the way folks lived in the past, not because I'm scared of the future. I can't speak for anyone else on here but they all seem to me to be pretty level headed and posess a highly developed sense of humour and I so enjoy the cameraderie and banter even if it is tongue in the cheek and about Zombies!!!!!!!!0 -
A good friend and I have always said we would hate to have to deliver a baby - you know those random fears we all have. When her daughter went into labour it was rather faster than one would expect, we are 10 minutes from St Marys maternity hospital and karen couldnt get anyone to open the doors and let them in so she had to deliver her grandbaby in a mini in the car park. When my dd went into to labour we were stuck in traffic and I did at one point think I would have to do the same but luckily everything slowed down. i did help deliver DGS and can honestly say I would never like to do it again, unless it was totally necessary.
the thread is for those with an interest in prepping and meant to make you feel secure in the knowledge that in any bad circumstance you are looking after you and yours so please do not get stressed. Like I said before, its an insurance policy with no premiums to pay
The one thing I can do out of that list is deliver a baby - or should I say catch a baby. If they are coming that quick it is generally ok and they just need to be snuggled into mum and kept warm.
Well just started a conversation with my DD who is 20 and zombie mad - she has her plan all worked out:eek:I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.0 -
I keep thinking how much easier the second world war would have been if there had been time to prep? It must have been hell not having things you need especially with small children, illness and cold winters. Doesnt bear thinking about - and they didnt have to worry about zombies! :rotfl:
Am off to Mr A to see if they have a slanket hanging about. Well to see if there are any ys's that could help my preppingClearing the junk to travel light
Saving every single penny.
I will get my caravan0 -
I am saddened by the tone of some of the posts in that other thread, but in a way it is only to be expected, as in my (very modest, very limited) experience anything SHTF-like attracts a fair amount of venom from people who feel we are just scaremongerers. I am sad because so many of the people attacking this thread are also very competent, wise people who could really direct their energy to making the world a better place instead of turning against perfectly useful and legitimate groups. Ah well, I just posted a couple of tongue-in-cheek posts there and now I am officially withdrawing from the "argument" (if it can be called that), for the sake of peace.Well just started a conversation with my DD who is 20 and zombie mad - she has her plan all worked out:eek:Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).0

CATERINA - Its a big world and there's room for us all and our own experiences colour our points of view. I think we're all quite happy on this thread and if there is a difference of opinion on its validity as OS material then dissenters really don't have to read. We are all quite content to be left in peace and not feel we can't say what we think in case we distress anyone lurking - I hope that's a fair summation. Cheers Lyn x.0

Hi everyone - new to the forum
I'm so glad I've found this thread, I too think we should be prepared and not solely be reliant on others / the goverment.
Something I've also done, which may be of interest to some of you, is to utilise the space underneath my house - and I now have this area that is dry, water tight, and completely safe / secure.0
