I think it's sitting still that does it Katie. I'm frozen during the day when I'm sitting at my desk, but warm up in the evenings when I'm doing stuff.

I forgot to stock up on rice milk after having run my stocks down, so wll have to make my porridge with cream or water, or have something else for breakfast if the weather stops me getting out once this box is finished. Toast, scrambled eggs, omelettes etc spring to mind do I should be OK!
  • I remember Izal it was always in the school loos in the 60's and 70's............. tracing paper for your bum

Oh my goodness I remember that to :rotfl::rotfl:

Arhhh what a week. After reading here that someone had a hard drive replaced for half the cost I was quoted I rung around and I think we must be in an expensive area. Decided to try and sort laptop out and with determination, perseverance and a clearer mind have done it Yay :j:j:j:j:j:j:j:j:j:j:j:j:j
So money saved and big sense of achievement. Know virtually nothing about computers other than using the word processor function and internet so I'm feeling good. I hate being beaten and get a bit ocd about solving problems even when I am initially clueless.

No more snow here yet and we are off to get car sorted tomorrow so fingers crossed it holds till teatime. Have already got a to do list including extra diesel. Like to have well over half a tank in situations such as this, enough for 300 miles just in case we have to get to parents and also in advance of places running out because tanker deliveries can't get through.
I'm adding a few extra bits to my ocado delivery for saturday night but if they are delayed we have more than enough to manage. Oh makes all our bread and I bought a ton of flour when it was on offer.

I think many people are going to learn a few lessons during this weather. I suggested to mil that she put a blanket in the car and made sure her phone was charged and that the car was generally prepared for the weather. She thourght I was fussing and replied that she doesn't go far so not to worry. I give up. A few years ago before christmas we returned from fil up nr manchester and the weather had turned bad. We had to stop at Sandbach like so many others and try to clear the screen and fill up the washer. The roads were barely passable and we had to drive with the windows open as we had no heater and kept steaming up. we had warm clothing and water but no coffee. Not a journey I will forget or want to repeat. We have everything in the boot now bar the kitchen sink.
Take care and stay warm and thanks for being there this week. It's really helped me deal with stuff.
  • GQ - thank you just for being, it doesn't matter what the subject, you are the voice of reality and always make me feel that whatever fate throws our way, there is a GQ standing guard to throw something bigger back at it!!!!! Thank you for making me feel better and I suspect I am not alone in this, stay warm and dry aeveryone, Cheers Lyn xxx.[/QUOTE]

    Take care everyone.

I am fretting that I'm not there and OH will take chances. Hopefully he knows that I have stocked up on everything before I came away, just hope he knows where to find it. DDs school is a little way from home but have told her to ring my friend who lives near the school if she gets stranded. Friend has OKd that. So I think I have prepared everyone as best I can and have to watch from my sun bed as the day unfolds :rotfl:

    (sorry!!!)

Edit - school have texted to say it is closed. That's a relief.
I wanna be in the room where it happens

    :) Morning all.

:o(((ladies))) don't know what I've ever done to deserve such a compliment but thank you, it's put a smile on my face this morning.:o

Well, reporting from Somewhere in Southern England currently sitting under an amber snow warning. The local rag online makes no reference to the additonal snow but we somehow acquired an extra 1 inch + between my retiring to my nest at 22.30 and arising at 06.30. This snow wot's on the ground/ in the sky but not in the meeja is a remarkable phenomena, isn't it? Which shows the value of trusting your own instincts and commonsense.

Get the slightly officious use of the 24 hr clock? :D We're encouraged to use this at work. Dunno why, it's not like if we book an appt for someone at 3 they're gonna assume we mean 3 am not 3 pm - municipal buildings will be closed anyway.

Ach well, I'm old enough and sarky enough to just roll with it.

I took the pain meds to SuperGran's last night after work and stopped for a cuppa and a chat. She'd gone a bit stir crazy but thought it prudent to stay off the icy roads and pavements. I asked her if I could get her anything tomorrow (today) and she asked for bread.

Now, knowing human nature, I have grave misgivings that there will be any bread for sale by late aft when I exit the office so will leave early and try to get some beforehand. But, I have Plan B which is 3 loaves of bread proving in their tins, fresh made this morning. I'll bake them off after work.

If I can't get some from the shop, one of those will have SG's name on it. If I can, the spare can fit in the freezer. I did try to suggest that SG, normally a paragon of good sense, seriously stock up on bread 2 days ago but she only bought a modest amount. She hates waste but she has a freezer compartment style fridge and could have squeezed some in there.

I have 5kg of breadflour and about 2 years' supply of dried yeast, as I stocked up in 2012 when baking supplies were on a 3 for 2. I found out by accident that dried yeast is perfectly good for several years past its BB date, a useful thing to know.

Reviewing my preps, I'm feeling quietly confident that I can manage without extra input of bread for 3 months and milk for 4 weeks, so that will leave some in the shops for the non-prepped persons. Am up on the laundry in case there's a powercut and well-candled and torched up inc battery-free options.

Predictions for today: bread and milk famines in most regions, much grumping from the general public about disruption to services and more s0dding grit bins to refil. I get to detest the word grit bin with a vengence. Roll on the spring when we'll pick them up and cart them back to the depot.

Hokay, time for a good breakfast (omelette) as I'm feeling sure my day will be a trying one.

Keep warm and well, and be careful out there. I'm adding a telescopic walking pole with it's spiky end to my ensemble today and I don't care if anyone takes the pish. Better to be mocked and vertical than groovy and on your a$$ in the snow, say I.

    Morning fellow batties.
News reports today of panic buying and empty shelves. However here at casa Pineapple we have a mini shop (where's the smug smiley when you need it?). Going to continue the experimentation with home made spelt bread. It will never be as fluffy as white but I think I can improve on the last effort.
Back on the weather front, I wonder if we are the laughing stock of countries which measure their snowfall in feet, not centimetres? I know all the infrastructure reasons why we don't cope as well but still.... I once co-drove through Scandinavia up to the Arctic Circle in early Spring. We were surrounded by a sea of white stuff but it never occured to us that driving would be difficult - and it wasn't.
I'm going up to play on the road later but I believe traffic is still flowing there. Last night around midnight snow was falling, but on the road it was melting as it fell.
Meanwhile further afield I'm wondering if events in Algeria and Mali will have further and ongoing ramifications?
Maybe we were a bit quick to dismiss the 2012 doom mongering ;)
2013 is getting off to a very rocky start.

:) gailey, hun, thinking of you and your family out there in the severe snow. Take care.

You absolutely DON'T need to have a bread tin to bake bread. Any baking sheet will do, or an oven-proof plate (tin/ pyrex). A casserole dish. Cleaned food tins are fine, too.

Just grease the tin. I use cooking oil smeared on, but you could grease with butter or marg.

If you're baking bread and you're not a regular, remember that once you've removed the bread from the oven, leave it in the tins for 10 mins to "release" from the sides. No longer, and get it out and onto a cooling rack (I cool mine upside down). If you leave it past the 10 mins and let it cool completely in the tin the steaminess of the bread will cause it to go soggy.

You need about 30 mins for loaves but 15 mins for rolls. Gas 7 or equivalent.

Blimey, Radio 4 is telling me there's already 4 inches of snow on the ground in Mertyr Tydfil (sorry of mis-spelled).

I'll be online until about 9 am so if any breadish queries, pls ask. HTH.

I make all my bread on a baking sheet in the form of baps/ bread cakes/bread buns (depending on what part of the country you are in).
The advantage to this is it's quicker - so less fuel, there is less risk of finding the inside uncooked (but it's generally done if the bottom sounds hollow whern tapped), plus for a low user like me, it's easily frozen and defrosted to be used as required.
