GQ yes lots of us would perish - I guess the population would lessen fairly quickly.
Ginny I think you have it there - strength in numbers and inter-generational living is the way forward, both SHTF-wise and to see us through these times. I live with two of my grown-up children and they often provide the muscle-power to allow me to continue to garden, cut wood etc. I think we'll see a lot more inter-generational households and they have lots of benefits.

Just popped in to leave some links for making your own solar water heaters. Three types here.
Also here, and here. I have saved this info and pictures for printing later.
    Interesting one here.
    This one is more complicated.

You can just wrap some plastic bottles in a bin bag and lay them in the sun in an emergency and it does not have to be summer, just put something under them to keep them off a cold surface.

I used to get a smallholding magazine and many of those who had tried self sufficiency had to resort to an occupation albeit part time. It's a hard life and here in the UK we are not exactly teeming with wildlife or blessed with a wonderful climate! While certain cultures do live in much more hostile environments - ie desert or arctic conditions - populations are not nearly as dense and they have knowledge acquired through generations.
We need more of this sort of scheme..

Plus there are apparently a growing number of projects where people are clubbing together to buy essentials and utilities.
And more families are living together due to finances.
But I don't think there can be a general change of mindset unless people's backs are truly against the wall. Here in my community of 20 households for example we could do so much more. In terms of food production alone, the older less fit people could relinquish their large manicured lawns for the younger element to cultivate for the benefit of all. And between us we have a good range of skills and knowledge. But I guess we will keep on living totally separate lives until or unless it gets really bad.:(

  • Hello all

    :) Happy New Year!

A big thank you to all posters, very interesting stuff, please keep posting. I may not get on here as much, but I do catch up on e-mail subscription.

Great news for me is that my temp job is now permanent, and may soon be reviewed so might get more hours! :A

I must be doing something right....

OH raided the stores to top up his milk supplies, so, need to check what's there. Lesson, er, 6 I think, record what you have so you aren't scrambling around in cupboards, etc., wondering whats there.

I loved the discussion on skills, I want to grow more of my own veg., but, learn as many methods of preserving as I can: jams, jellies, pickles, chutney's, dehydrate/dry, freeze, find a way of preserving fresh longer, and of course, not forgetting h/m wine, beer!

Now feel the urgent need to get a Kelly Kettle, as we do actually camp, although the weather was pants last year....

Learning to draw/paint, so want to make more stuff e.g. Cards for all occasions, but would also like to do more crafts for pressies, e.g. hampers for Xmas, fantastic tips on MSE, I may well be living on these sites!

I have also not watched TV as much, as it seems to be endless repeats, although I do like anything about making stuff/cooking, so I'd like to be doing something like stitching when the box is on....

So many ideas, so little time, too much time on MSE!

Good luck all, let's hope we can make the best of what's coming, chin up and all that....:)
