They're made if medical grade silicone fuddle. A LOT less harmful than bleached cotton (unless cotton is organic it will also have had a lot of pesticides used to grow it). Menstrual cups have never been associated with toxic shock syndrome. You just need to keep your hands clean!
I think there is a thread about them on the green and ethical board.
Thank youI'll look into getting one after Christmas.
Nuatha thank you. I would dearly love to prep for survival in the wilderness and have tried but it becomes such a nightmare with provisions for a family of 4. I got myself in a muddle and worried over it all so quit, had a break and now I have a likely scenario that I'm sticking to and a shopping list where i'll add an item or two in the weekly grocery shop. That ruck sack will be jam packedI like the idea of backpacks for the girls. They could carry their own pjamas, jumpers, underwear etc. They're moving schools soon and will need new school named backpacks. Their old ones will do the job
thank you muchly.

I'm not so much prepping for survival in the wilderness, as prepping to get out of the S* zone as comfortably as possible. We have two possible bug out locations within a 15 mile radius and another within 50 miles (with family/friends). TBH if circumstances permit I'd rather sit tight and ride the storm out. My gear is set up the way it is, largely because I used to do a lot of backpacking, minimum weight wild country camping, therefore I have the kit acquired over 30+ years and the experience to use it. If my normal transport was bicycle, then I'd have a major rethink.
Given your most likely scenario, there are two possible types of location your local authority will consider for evacuation, one is a school or sports hall, the other is a B&B/hotel.
The 29th June floods across the North East, resulted in LA's booking large numbers of hotel rooms (well beyond their usual emergency accommodation lists) then finding out that they weren't able to transport people to many of the hotel locations. Families booked into a B&B may well find the family are sharing a single room, communal toilet and shower facilities and no access to laundry or kitchen. The B&B may provide a hot breakfast, the room probably has a kettle, that leaves two meals a day to put together with fairly minimal facilities. Takeaway food won't be cheap, boredom will be a major factor, how do you deal with it?

I'm not so much prepping for survival in the wilderness, as prepping to get out of the S* zone as comfortably as possible.
But I do think that the key to long term sustainability - in a whole variety of scenarios - is community ie coming together to help and support each other. For example I hear that there are places overseas where people are developing their own currency and bartering systems. Necessity being the mother of invention and all that.....
If society broke down, it would be for protection too.
Meanwhile there are all sorts of initiatives springing up - take a look at Incredible Edible Todmorden for example http://www.incredible-edible-todmorden.co.uk/
The future will be a great challenge for people like me because by nature I'm not a 'joiner inner'. But I think it has to come.0 -

water pumps!! I met a couple of people today who are dashing out to get water pumps for flooding. I think they are more important than generators. Apparently the lane was full of people with torches again last night, all stood outside their houses and watching the torrent. Water is rushing off the fields and that is how some have been flooded so being high up may be no protection at all0

Ditches, if the roads and fields had ditches properly maintained (as in 2m deep) then flooding by rain washing down hills would be far more limited. Ditch digging is a lost art and one that needs to be resurrected.Start info Dec11

all the local ditches are very well maintained and have been full for days, as well as the fields by them and also the roads that they run by. They are part of the flood scheme in the county. The fields above houses need very big drains and they just don`t have them, so rainwater rushes down and into house plots. Too many houses and too much tarmac0 -
This is a screen shot of our risk of flooding when we move
We're out of the risk from sea flooding and out of the risk for extreme flooding but seeing how little we are from the river in reality I'm not for one second thinking we're safe.
Hard surfaces, lots of new builds on green spaces is contributing I think too kittie. Where I'm moving to was all green space a few year back and now it's concrete with not a tree in sight. Compare the amount of water rushing into the drains and river with just that one new estate with a green space with sodden ground. what can we expect really? :cool:0
