The other problem is the draining systems are not joined up - so even where you had ditches that are properly dug and maintained they don't lead to the rivers and sea as they should. The ability of water to soak into land is very limited when the surface is covered with tarmacadam and the like.
Soak away should be compulsory, I know in one county a specific building inspector has insisted on these especially for houses which are built on hills, when I asked about it the inspector said saves flooding with a winkStart info Dec11

yes, a lot of the flooding is not happening from rivers and sea defences but is localised and straight off sodden fields, this doesn`t show on the environment maps. The drains as they are just cannot cope. I know several people who say they are high up so won`t get flooded. If fields are higher up than those properties, then they can be at risk but it would be more catastrophic ie a retaining wall or a bank giving way or a landslip
Nature is so powerful, oh and don`t get me going about global warming, which is a money-making scam. We have just had a large cme from a coronal hole which was earth facing. The radiations have caused massive and sudden changes in the jet stream which leads to the sudden and extreme weather the whole world has been getting.
missrir, the ditches here are fed from the rivers when the rivers overflow, part of the flood management scheme and brilliant imo. They have lots of sluice gates all over0 -
We are not too far from the river here, about 1/4 of a mile but up a slight incline. The water table here is so high at the moment that the drains in the road outside are brim full of water and the bottom of the road is 6" under across most of its width. This is where it joins the main drain in the biggest road in the area. I was out with the dog this afternoon and the heavens just opened, luckily we weren't too far from a bus shelter but the amount of water that came down in such a short time had to be seen to be believed! The local recreation ground is saturated and feels like walking on jelly when you are on the grass, and the local streams are brim full and in spate too. I don't think we will have a problem as the house is 10'ish above road level but I hate to think what all this water is doing to the soil fertility after such a wet summer. We'll be lucky to get anything to grow at all in the next season. Cheers Lyn xxx.0

Oh yes! I hadn`t thought about that but absolutely right. Food production will be problematic next year and any root crops in the ground will likely be ruined. Personally, my cabbages of all types are looking fine, the plot is elevated but very slug damaged. I would say that potatoes and sprouts will be in short supply for christmas. I have good sprouts on some plants but any more wet and sun and they will `blow`.
I have been reading about flood proofing a house and it can be done to a certain level but at a cost, naturally0 -
okay.....this is an early warning about UK weather around the weekend.
My friend the storm chaser has just sent me some info and I thought I would warn you. There looks to be a really bad storm developing that may well hit Ireland, Scotland and the North of England around the weekend. I have the projected weather map as to how it will probably look by Friday but I can't remember the link to upload it to so that it can be put on here.....can anyone remind me what to upload it to so I can put it on this thread? Thanks..That fits 2T.
PC predicted a very major storm 22-24th (+/- a day or so) for Ireland and NW Britain. SE very mild. Substantial wind damage, hail and thunderstorms. Got to admire the man, he sent us this forecast on 16th october
Thanks for these warnings. Amazing, why can't the msm give people more info like this to help those at risk to prepare I wonder.
Any more predictions available ? I believe we are in for a cold snap later this week with some snow.0 -
Yes KITTIE we too have some nice cabbages on the allotment, the red ones are standing well. We also have good leeks there and at home and a very nice healthy crop of parsnips on the allotment. I did wonder if the rain in the summer leaching away minerals was the cause of so many germination faliures and poor crops, thank heavens for the compost heap is all I can think right now, Cheers Lyn xxx.0

A national flood crisis say the environment agency. A danger to life weather warning that came out of no-where last night. Does anyone know how many people have been evacuated?
Well, looks like 2013 will be tougher still. Great points.0 -
