I am concerned with prepardness not only on a personal, family level but also in the wider community

Our nation’s emergency managers, firefighters, law enforcement officers,
EMT/paramedics, and other emergency responders do an incredible job of keeping
us safe, but they cannot do it alone. We must all embrace our personal
responsibility to be prepared – in doing so; we contribute to the safety and
security of our communities as well.

From here http://www.ready.gov/community-preparedness does anyone know of a UK version? In our village we are ressurecting the Emergency Action Team formed in the village after the 87 hurricane, which has sadly closed. The idea is to hold info of volunteers who will check on vulnerable neighbours, details of people with helpful equipment etc in case of emergencies.

My friend who is a forecaster in the states says he sees more heavy rain for the UK over the next few days then a very cold spell with freezing temperatures and snow near the end of the week. I will post updates as I get them. Hope this helps someonexxx

From the snippets that we're very lucky to be given by one of our posters on here, I find him to be very accurate and not only that but accurate about the occurrences early.

I would actually like to sign up his forecasts but my money is needed elsewhere at the moment. I am going to try to learn about what it is he thinks is effecting the weather and why the big institutions don't take him seriously. As far as I can see he's been spot on so many times and the big know it alls have been very late to predict.

I was in Lewes after a major lot of flooding several years ago. I think that every skip in that part of the world was on the streets and chocka with what had once been valuable and treasured belongings before the floods ruined them. It was so sad to see it all spoiled.

I was living there then, luckily our flat was ok but the car park became a lake for a while. I cycled through the flood waters around the town just staring at it (I was only a teenager), it was surreal. It was a silent flood, no gushing rivers it just crept up very steadily and people watched in amazement. By the evening they were evacuating people in boats from one end of town. Looking at the shops afterwards (as you can see into them!) the damage was shocking, amazing what water can do. We had a temporary supermarket in the supermarket car park, no one could get to school/college for a few days.

Of course they have since built flood defenses. Well, a little wall around Tesco anyway!

  • He was certainly right about the med in that forecast, we are stuck in high pressure at the moment. Third day of 24 degrees plus and sunshine. It is not normally like this.....we seem to be in a pattern of three days of torrential rain and superstorms then seven days of sunshine and dry winds.

I can't afford to subscribe to him although I would love to...that is why I post the forecasts from my storm chasers for you all.

I fear my prepping has taken on a frivolous aspect, as this weekend I have made strawberry vodka, quince brandy, and limoncello. At least we will be cheerful/oblivious if flooded out or snowed in.....(my real horror is getting snowed in over Christmas with my visiting family - love them dearly over a few festive days, but longer than that might be challenging!!) lol, and possibly rofl when taste-testing the brews. Seriously, do hope all are staying dry and safe, such horrible times. Love all round, the cake xxxx

I think this is such a good idea, and to be honest it will be far more effective than outside government help.:)

    .

yes, we are now taking about getting a communal pump so that we can pump and clear the drains ourselves, since the council never got around to it. Most people are ready and willing to help

I think that's a brilliant idea Ragz and hope they keep it together. In Victorian times you had a roadman who was responsible for a section of road and he got a free house on his beat as part of the wages. He would clear the ditches and drainage channels - that would do wonders for small country roads. But they won't pay the wages now. Funny how, the more money there is around, the less they're inclined to spend it!
Woke up this morning to your rain. Thank you England :D
