Africa?? That'll be Zimbabwe you are talking about, I take it. Funny how you refer to the democratic leader of a free nation in a derogatory manner, and are at the same time still ignorant enough to refer to a single nation by the name of the continent in which it is situated. I am surprised you mention Nixon, are you American? Which monetary system are you referring to? Europe has its own system as does the States, the UK and other countries. The European currency was meant to be just that, European. Now if you said the global banking system I would have agreed with you.
I laughed in irony when you said most of us are unlikely to be affected by the things I mentioned, since many parts of the UK have already been badly affected by the weather and its showing signs of turning real nasty by this weekend. The risks of flooding or other damage from the weather are much closer and more immediate than the risk of finances crashing at the moment. Look at what is happening in the States with the weather, its out of control.
Being very well populated the UK will always be at risk of nasty viruses and outbreaks of contagious diseases. The ease of travel across the globe makes us all more prone to such risks.
The chance of a huge solar flare hitting earth is increasing as this year moves on as we are almost at solar maximum in this cycle. Next year will see it at its height. An emp (electromagnetic pulse) could wipe out communications and electricity grids for months or even years. We often get problems with communications when there are solar storms, we are being affected by one right now. Our satelite tv signal goes, then the Greek television programmes, the land line stops working and the mobiles go crazy and won't work properly. I have lost three computer hard drives and a fridge freezer to sudden strikes of lightning as well.
As for volcanoes, look at the chaos caused by the ash from the Icelandic volcano not so long ago. I am situated near enough to two three very active volcanoes to be worried about their normal activity never mind unexpected. I am also waiting for the builder to come and mend the earth tremor damage done to my house two weeks ago. The UK also has slight tremors which cause damage and its more likely to happen now that they have started fracking on a larger scale.“The superior man, when resting in safety, does not forget that danger may come. When in a state of security he does not forget the possibility of ruin.” Confucius (551 BC - 479 BC):A0 -

How is Hamas like Sinn Fein exactly? Could you please explain this comment?
I read this thread daily, and find it generally entertaining, but now and again some of the convert and overt racism and ignorance really winds me up and shocks me. I've been lucky to only experience one earth tremour powerful enough to notice here in southern England. At my flat, down on the gravelly riverbank, the bedstead just jumped about an inch and a whole lot of alarms went off on various buildings nearby. A pal a mile or so away on a different soil type said the window glass at his home vibrated for a good ten minutes after the tremour.
I do know that people who have experienced severe earthquakes describe it as something which really disturbs you on a psychological level. Because our minds tell us the ground shouldn't be moving and when it does......what else can be taken for granted?
I'm watching what is happening in southern Europe with my heart in my mouth. Those poor people who have lost, or are on the verge of losing, everything and ending up in utter despair and destitution. You could weep for it, and be scared that it will lead to a rise in political extremism across the continent.
I'm certain that the elite classes in the worst-affected countries have got their plans already hatched and plan to ride out the storm in relative comfort.
What I've been noticing in my job for the past few years is an acceleration of Provincial City's expatriate sons and daughters returning from Europe, especially from Spain. Sometimes people have lived abroad for anything from ten to thirty years and have now had to come back to the old country, as it were, when health, wealth and happiness (relationships) fail them.
I expect there will be an acceleration of this trend as things worsen. Of course, we're a very overcrowded country with housing in short supply and very expensive compared to most peoples' incomes, so life will become more difficult for everyone.
Keep yourself and your OH safe, 2tonsils, and keep us posted. I really value your contributions and I'm always pleased when I see a new post.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Well pardon me for not having time for World History and Politics in between studies on UK financial systems, How to not-need utilities, How to get medical treatment when I'm treated like an imbecile, How to keep my job when I can't physically do it, Latest developments in my area of work (including climate change, EU regulation/CAP, new plant and animal disease, growing resistance of parasites to chemicals, and people butchering animals alive), How to fix my car, How to decide if I should jack everything in and move home.
Oh, for the record, the Hamas/Sinn Fein comparison says to me "previously associated with terrorism but now a legitimate political body". That sound about right? Or am I not allowed to ask here?0 -
No need to give yourself an apoplexy Helen. But there is too much misinformation being bandied about on this thread and it worries me that people who don't have time to find things out accurately will be as misinformed as a Daily Mail reader. Wikipedia isn't always accurate, but here's a couple of links which aren't too bad.

You'll notice that neither are terrorists turned politicians, but both have long and strong histories as political parties. And fwiw, I didn't study world history and politics either. It's what is inside your head that matters in life - not what's outside your windowEvery worthwhile accomplishment, big or little, has its stages of drudgery and triumph; a beginning, a struggle and a victory. - Ghandi0
