Thanks...although I seem to have nicked the name idea off Crochet Teapot!!
Yes perhaps we should invest in gold instead!

Actually having your assets spread into different types of investment strategies is a sound way to manage your portfolio. I personally like silver, but gold is a great thing to hold in balancing your assets. I do have both.

I hold silver as more of a preppers mentality investment. If paper money lost its value, in certain situations,
I think it would be advantageous to have silver at hand.

prepping for me involves preserving food that I grow on the allotment but one stands head and shoulders above all others and that is hm sauerkraut ie not pasteurised. I just had a small dish of it and it is yummy but better than that is the intake of probiotics. I haven`t eaten any of my stash for quite a few months but am back into it with proof that the probiotics are working and multiplying. Lol I hope they will have settled by tomorrow, ok I`ll say the word `flatulence` I almost died when I was asked to go for a cuppa next door and then spent 20 minutes squeezing everything in tight and hoping that I could stand up gracefully from a very deep chair omg I don`t know how I got through without disgracing myself. Anyway that food is one of the ultimates in being beneficial to health and the dense cabbages are so easy to grow, especially in an uncertain, wet and cool climate. All it needs is some salt and an apple to get it going

My son is deep into fermenting all things and I have been looking on Amazon at the lids that let CO2 escape but keep out oxygen. Do you have any experience using this type of lid?

Very short message from me as I need to be awake/sensible in about 5 hours.

I got a PM that I'd been apologised to - No idea why as I don't think I was due an apology. Thank you for the heads up as I've not actually logged on for a couple of weeks.

Not driven off the thread, but I know when tired/stressed/busy I tend to write far too many words and can irritate people (all people, not just you MLW ;))

I decided to back off posting till post referendum (as I knew people were invested in the outcome), then had my (delayed) camping trip, and then got buried at work (In no way implying we were unprepared for the ref result *cough*)

There's no way I'm catching up on 35 pages tonight (or truthfully doing much reading/posting for the next week or so/until recess), and have no preference regards one or two threads (but would like to discuss politics - and the implications of Chilcot - somewhere. I'm boring like that. Will consider discussion time if 'that talk' isn't welcome here)

I really hope things work out nuatha - and you consider popping in/out/all about from time to time. You're good people.

I remember the day before decimalisation my favourite nail varnish was 3 shillings and sixpence. Two days later I looked in at the same shop and it was 35 pence. It was not till I had left the shop I worked out that 35 pence was seven old shillings and it had doubled in price.

That lesson alone helped me be cynical about money matters and learn as much as I could and probably influenced me to pay off the mortgage early, pay off credit cards in full, save for what I wanted etc.
:) Quite a few people who went through the decimilisation experience are adamant that it caused inflation. There are statistics which purport to show otherwise but, as my older friends recall, a lot of shopkeepers/ manufacturers seem to have used the confusion to slip price increases through, as per your example.

If nothing else, this early example of the perfidity of the world was an excellent life lesson and shaped your behaviour in a way which has done you a lot of good.

:) Yes, and yes. Their stuff isn't cheap, even on sale, but it performs incredibly well and is virtually indesctructable. Some people have owned pieces which have had a lot of use for thirty years, and they're still going strong.

I have seen it from time to time in TK M@xx, once even a pair of trousers in my size, which I bought for £10. You can wade in these trousers and be dry 10 mins later. Yet they look just like a pair of casual cotton (they're not cotton) trousers.

A really useful thing is that they all have secure, zipped hidden pockets, even the tops have them hidden in the seams. When I was travelling the world, I had my mugger's wallet, my proper wallet, stuff on a money belt, and the emergency bank card and cash supply, in a small bank bag, zipped into one of the little hidden pockets in my clothing.

If nothing else, robbing me would have been time-consuming.:rotfl:

No flatulence this morning, good, the probiotics have settled down. :D

I am going to be fermenting mixed veg too, never done anything other than cabbage and courgettes in a 5 litre fermenter which is awesome. It has a stone weight and a rim to hold water so will let gas out. I ordered some fermenter lids for my kilners last night

I prefer plastic as metal gets affected. They sound very good and I like the idea of just making a litre at a time. It only takes a few days to make. I do find that eating a small amount of sauerkraut stops a sweet tooth craving in its tracks

I am also looking at a new book called the art of fermentation, written by sandor katz. Think I will treat myself and it will make a good present for my son, that and some kilners with fermenting lids. A birthday present that keeps on giving

Slept well, maybe it is the new probiotics and up early to get some phacelia green manure sown on my broad bean bed, to bed down before this possible spanish plume. I love going up there early, just me and birdsong

It was always my suspicion (veering towards "virtual certainty") that the Government/Welsh Assembly/businesses etc wouldnt have plans in place in case of Brexit.

You dont surprise me with your ....ahem...hint that the Welsh Assembly hasnt (not implying the Government will have either - as I bet they havent - Cameron definitely seemed to have been taken by surprise).

Just HOW much has the Assembly been taken by surprise? What is happening now to catch-up quick? Has any funding been allocated to it?

Are you allowed to give us any clues?:)

    Morning all
    Hope everyone is well
We have rain this morning but Dh assures me it will be fine later.
Get ds2 back from his residential toninght he's on the first week of his Ncs month and this week was spent camping in the wilds of Lincolnshire - hopefully topping up his scouting camping skills for use in later life.

Saddened by the news from Dallas more shootings overnight triggered by the shooting of the guy by the police. Why can't people get along? We are all humans.

In work all day today and over the weekend plan to confirm the stuff for our new bathroom, plus catch up on ironining and cleaning.

Doing a Morries shop tomorrow as running low on tea coffee flour and pasta so want to check what's available.

    Have a good day all.

re possible shtf wrt prices. We should not see any difference if we buy British based products, unless they are using substances that have been imported. It is pretty obvious then that simple is best ie hm from British grown ingredients Does anyone remember when we were all encouraged to buy British, in the 70s or 80s, there was a massive surge of patriotism at that time, Exporters will be benefiting at the moment in that there will be more demand for their goods and I am thinking possible shortages of items that will be wanted in eg china, india etc

I was taught in the past that it was best to eat food naturally grown in this country etc potatoes, apples, cabbages etc. All the exotic fruits come from different hotter climates and are consequently higher in sugars and our digestive systems have not evolved to cope with them. Back to basics for me when I can and I find that having a peach now is a real one off treat
  • Which reminds me Kittie - re some of the fruit glut I've currently got going on.

I've checked out the more precise instructions I read somewhere for bottling rhubarb without sugar.

These instructions say they are only for rhubarb, gooseberries and cranberries (ie presumably because they are more acid type fruits?):

    - Pare. Cut in small pieces.
    - Pack in sterilised jar.
    - Cover with cold water.
    - Leave 10 minutes.
    - Drain.
    - Replace water.
    - Put lid back on jar
    DONE

Has anyone preserved it by that method? I understand that maybe the rhubarb will go paler in colour if just preserved in water - but is still perfectly edible/safe.

I presume jostaberries can be done by that method too - as one of their "parent" plants is a gooseberry??
