Even within America, some parts of the country are more laid back than others. What some areas would lounge around in at home, other areas wear to Walmart or the grocery store or anywhere. Some people here wear shorts to church. I just can't get my head around that.
New Yorkers (city) seem to like black...a lot.
We have varied and rich differences depending on climate, ethnic populations, area of country etc.
The arid hot SW tends to like color. But I promise you, I have no lemon yellow pants. Tops...well that's a different story. Generally it's a black/neutral skirt or pants (or jeans) with a colored top.
We also like a lot of flashy jewelry. Many of us wear Native American jewelry and lots of it at one time. Turquoise and lemon yellow anyone?
Mardatha, you are right. We tend to think to each his own. Although Walmart shoppers can take that much too far as witnessed by the YouTube videos. Some of those images would make the most accepting person cringe!:eek:Overprepare, then go with the flow.

She sent me Navajo turquoise beads and I wear them every day
The thing I love about Americans is they are so open and friendly. Not judgemental or snobbish as many here can be.
Re prepping, I'm thinking lately the most likely threat now is from our own Govt - cutting benefits, cutting jobs, zero hour contracts, etc. Having a load of old cookbooks from the days when we all had less money is a good thing right now. And learning to cook and use what is available and cheap. Learning to alter clothes and knit/unravel woollens. Because once the EU thing is decided then this shower will go full steam ahead with Tory plans, and that means the workhouse for many of us!0 -
I've been to America once I was lucky enough to win a holiday to Disneyland Florida. I loved the kindness and attitude of the American people I met there. As examples our youngest was only a few months old and women on the bus from the hotels to the parks would try to give up the seats for my Dh who was carrying the baby. They got infuriated with him for trying to refuse and got all " but sir you have a baby you NEED to sit", in one of the parks we were walking through an area when he must have dropped his bundle of Disney dollars from his pocket, immediately people backed away from him and started saying "sir you've dropped dollars and pointing to them" final one that upset my mum in law was when I walked ahead to the hotel pool that was almost deserted, once I saw her heading in I left the pushchair near some seats and went to collect some drinks, she walked over to pushchair and baby. Guy who saw me walk away told her she was not the person who put the baby there and was not allowed to touch it till I got back or he would call hotel security he then stood guard till I came back. I was happy at no time was my son unattended as I saw mil approaching before I left so knew she could see the pushchair as I was leaving but this guy didn't know that and he was looking out for my son, I thanked him and explained what was happening he said you never could be too careful with children as they see so precious and it was his pleasure. I'd love to go back to America again.
Comment from the guy by the pool was that he knew I was from England as I was wearing a black bathing suit, he said he noticed English women tended to favour plain black or dark one piece suits. Not sure how true that is and it was about 16 years ago.
A couple of my husbands cousins married Americans just after the war, one from New York now lives here with her and the other lives in Tennessee they come over a few times and keep asking us to visit.SPC~12 ot 124

Mrs M!
What nice stories.
Florida is a beautiful state. The running joke is you can never find anyone born in Florida because they have all moved there from somewhere else. Many retire and move there.
Tennessee is also beautiful and full of charming people. I have nephews that live there and just love it.
I've only been to NYC and Staten Island. My DD1's Inlaws are from upstate NY.
I hope you have the opportunity to visit again.Overprepare, then go with the flow.

I have been lucky enough to go to the US a few times. My favourite story is from Tennessee, when we arrived at the hotel (the "Chattanooga Choo Choo" Holiday inn) it was raining. Being British i was joking in the check-in queue that I wasn't happy about it to two ladies. next day at breakfast - with glorious blue skies - one of them rushed over to me and said "we ordered this beautiful sunny day just for you" :rotfl:
I have been to New Mexico too - had my best ever breakfast there. Huevos Rancheros - took about 2 hours to eatI wanna be in the room where it happens0 -
Certainly won't be staying up late on Thursday, we have to be up v v early on Friday to drive oop North to collect Dd2 from uni. We are finally home from hols and it looks like it will stop raining long enough to get the washing done. The weather has been weird this June. I normally put a wash on as soon as we get home but we were delayed six hours in Calais yesterday because of a broken down train in the tunnel compounded by an attempt by a bunch of people from the Jungle to get through the tunnel. There were a few hundred people muttering Brexit.....
It might not have been quite so long but it was very busy because a lot of people were returning from Le Mans. Men vastly outnumbered women and I witnessed something I never thought I would see....
Long queues for the Gents and you could walk straight into the Ladies loos!!!
They say everything comes to she who waitsIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0 -
Just goes to show how an odd comment can be useful - if in a "darn it" sense in this respect.
The thought hadnt occurred to me that there might be hold-ups for us trying to, perfectly legitimately, use the Channel Tunnel to get through to France - because of other people illicitly trying to get through from the other end. Duh! <slap head smilie>
We see the effects of this uncontrolled immigration (legal or otherwise) in our queues at the doctors surgery, difficulties in getting our children in school places, etc - but, at the less important (ie leisure) level - there are also these knock-on effects.
Just glad I'm not a poor lorry-driver trying to get to and from the Continent without picking up any "extra cargo". Definitely sorry for those guys - when all they are trying to do is earn a honest penny doing a job of work.0 -

And you think 'Brexit' will change this? These are not economic migrants but refugees - migrants can just come in......
And the hold ups may well be worse if border controls come in....
The 'poor lorry driver' will also have a more challenging time if we go - either by longer waits or not having a job at all.....I wanna be in the room where it happens0
