Interesting post GQ ( apart from the gap filling ! ) I think Grey Shadow has got us all thinking and it's been a useful exercise for us . I still think the bears were a bit unfair - especially after your plans . Still trying to rid myself of the Hannibal image - why mention the fava beans ? Some days it seems the world is against me .

Been scouting around some Japanese sites - due to the likelihood of natural disasters the japanese gov recommend everyone preps for an emergency happening anytime.
Really liked this list of what to carry when:
http://www.wanavi.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/Emergency-Supply-Checklist.pdf
Interesting contrast to a large number of American lists.
I'd go for a powerbank rather than a spare mobile battery.
I don't carry a helmet or rain poncho, generally have a shell jacket, dust mask and a couple of pairs of gloves (one for warmth, one fine protective work gloves).
I don't carry a blanket but do have a couple of fleeces in my carry bag.
In the home list, I don't have a wagon cart, though having read GQ'sreasoning, one is on the planned acquisitions list, in the interim I can make one suitable for town use (5 inch diameter wheels, wouldn't particularly cope with rough tracks) by simply unbolting my table saw from its bench. Or use the wheelbarrow.
I wouldn't stock alpha rice, its a semi de-hydrated survival food - its rank. The Uncle Bens style rice pouches are at least edible, would be quicker to prepare and can be eaten cold without additional water.
Although I have gas cartridge cookers, my preference if I need to carry a cooker is a trangia and meths.
Overall a useful list, and another thinking exercise - I enjoy being made to think.0 -
New Shadow I thought you said earlier you were looking for hints and tips for protecting your ribs . Just noticed your new thread should we worry ?

Om nom nom... Need to include dry rub in hand luggage.
Seasoning makes everything edible.:D
So, in the event of a plane crash we are agreed:
1. We stay with the plane (at least for the first few days)
2. GQ gives a rousing speech on how we're alive and need to stay that way
3. Bob moves the bodies out of sight and packs them with ice for later
4. nuatha lights the fire (wire wool experience)
5. The rest of us build a shelter - Polly gets to be a space heater or tent pole (her choice...)
6. Mar eats the chocolate
7. elaine gets to take the orders for leg or breast
8. I can chop wood without cutting my foot off (mostly)
Did I miss anything? That sounds like a classic case of premature extrapolation.

Okay, different scenario.
You're traveling away from home - let's say you're going for an interview and staying overnight in a hotel outside the city. You left your car at the hotel, and you're using public transport (you were worried about parking). You only have what you're carrying on your person for the interview (be honest about what you'd be carrying/wearing).
You had your interview - it went well (congratulations), and you take a walk in the nearby park to cool off. You try to use your phone to tell your nearest and dearest the good news, but there's no signal and no 3G. You become aware of a lot of noise - voices shouting and vaguely what sounds like a loudspeaker. You can hear sirens in the distance. You can smell smoke.
What do you do?
I would head in the opposite direction to the sirens and noise as it sounds like a demonstration that may be breaking down into rioting. I would be dressed in a suit with smart shoes but not really high as I cant walk in them! In my handbag I always carry my medication, a penknife, antibac hand wash, small bottle of water or empty to refill, emergency choc x 2, my keys, plasters, pain killers, mirror, lighter, torch and a very small survival kit just a bit bigger than matchbox.
I would find a map of the city centre (like the tourist ones in town centres) or locate and but a map quickly. I would buy extra water and then work out the most direct/safest way to hoof it back to the car or hotel ( assuming public transport is not running otherwise back on the bus!). Once back to the car I would just pack up and leave asap! I always have at least half tank of fuel and a dislike of city centres so any excuse to get home! In my car I have food, water, blankets, first aid, wet wipes, a get home bag, walking boots, waterproofs, maps, larger survival kit, knife, tools, flashlight and a "very heavy flashlight". I would work out a route avoiding the area the noise was coming from. I need no excuse to leave town even if the noise and sirens were only a rally or demonstration that was just noisy but peaceful :-)

Not keen on cities myself but I get to them so rarely, I can't waste the opportunity. So as long as I wasn't knee deep in rioters I would carry on shopping.0

Pineapple I loath shopping too! I'm not sure that I'm wired properly as a woman!

There are a few of us about. If anyone ever suggests going shopping as a pastime, as if it's some kind of big treat, I feel like saying that I'd rather have a root canal filling, that's how I feel about it.
I do quite like the occasional mooch around the reclamation yard, tho. Wood! Slabs! Tiles! Things which could make other things!Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.
