Okay, different scenario.
You're traveling away from home - let's say you're going for an interview and staying overnight in a hotel outside the city. You left your car at the hotel, and you're using public transport (you were worried about parking). You only have what you're carrying on your person for the interview (be honest about what you'd be carrying/wearing).
You had your interview - it went well (congratulations), and you take a walk in the nearby park to cool off. You try to use your phone to tell your nearest and dearest the good news, but there's no signal and no 3G. You become aware of a lot of noise - voices shouting and vaguely what sounds like a loudspeaker. You can hear sirens in the distance. You can smell smoke.
What do you do?That sounds like a classic case of premature extrapolation.

Re last plane scenario after the choclate etc was gone no one mentioned eating the pilots!! Bob mentioned cannabilising the wiring, but in a freezing cold situation the bodies are not going to decay and we would have a fire going! Pilot on a stick anyone?

I'd look to the smoke and try to estimate its proximity to my current position. What are we talking, a few hundred meters, a mile or more? Smoke can be visible tens of miles. Is it black smoke, is there any odour of chemicals? What's over there anyway (if the anwer is Grangemouth, or a nuclear power plant, I'm worrying.) Is the prevailing wind bringing the smoke towards me or away from me?
Also, are the sirens getting louder (approching) indicating that part of the crisis is close to me? Where is my hotel in relation to the smoke? Can I walk back to my hotel, do I even know which direction it's in? Is the incident very new, in which case there may be a second or even a third incident about to start - think about bombs and a second or third bomb being set on the likely path of people fleeing the first explosion. It would be no time to get onto underground or overground trains, I would reckon. Buses would be easier to get off in a hurry.
Me being me, I will be carrying a lot of cash. If I wasn't, I'd aim for the nearest ATM or go into branch and get the maximum. Quickly review the situation vis a vis footwear (walkable in?) and carrying capacity - have I got a bag capable of carrying a water bottle or two and some high density food, if not, get on the case asap, perhaps a cheap backpack to carry it in. If I haven't a coat and things are looking dodgy, where's the nearest chazzer; coat, bag, maybe a towel? What about a town or city map, eitherr an A-Z or one from a vending machine?
Bearing in mind the speed news travels, can I get to somewhere with a landline phone (ask in a shop - offer to pay?) to call my nearest and dearest and let them know that although I am in X city, I'm not hurt but may in incommunicado for some time due to mobile telephony issues.
Think creatively, who will have access to comms? Police, bus drivers, cabbies will be using their own systems and may have news. If I have a long way to go and have cash, maybe I could flag down a passing cyclist and offer them some notes for an old bike, or nip into a 2nd hand bike shop. You can easily bike at thrice walking speed, although debris on roads can puncture tyres easily.
Best to scoop us some shelf-stable foodstuffs. I might get back to my hotel and find I need to hunker down there for a while but their caterers can't deliver and their kitchens are soon out of grub. I'll need to find someone with a radio and listen for news to work out if best to stay put or set off home.
Lots of things you could do, but you'd have to make lot of decisionsin a hurry. I might nip into the nearest takeaway and buy and eat something hearty to sustain me.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

No fighting - you might attract the bears back. That sounds like a classic case of premature extrapolation.
