Oooh, Pipney Jane, sorry was reading down-thread and realised I hadn't responded to your query about the Petzl head-torch's light quality.
Well, they're LEDs and my model is the Tikka Plus 2 which has 2 settings, economy and full power for white light, and you can switch it to red light, plus it has the option of being set to a flashing mode, useful in emergencies.
I looked at a display of lots of different ones and they rate them in lumens (1 lumen = 1 candle flame apparently) and I think this one is 50 lumens. I could check but would have to dig the instruction book from the depths of the BOB where it sits inside the document folder. I'm sure there were other versions which had lower numbers of lumens.

You could definately read or knit by it on the lower setting but the higher one would be overkill. I was walking around in pitch-dark woods miles from anywhere on uneven ground and it was a great bit of kit. HTH.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Lovely news for lovely people in here
Surely in M&S the stairs are still where the stairs always were though? If you can stand in there and picture it as it used to be, then the stairs gotta be where they were. God does that make sense? I'm just up !0 -
MAR - They've done away with the stairs in ours and just crammed all the different sections into the one downstairs floor!!!!! They say they've improved our food hall as well, but only seem to sell half the lines they used to at increased prices, not really my idea of improvement. Still there are other shops to use, their loss at the end of the day, not that my meagre purchases were going to add much to their bank balance, even on a good day! Cheers Lyn xxx.0

I find John Lewis in Oxford Street an absolute nightmare now. They've changed the orientation of the escalators and I just can't get my bearings anymore. And when you head towards the escalator you find you can't get to it directly and you have to go on a long detour. Hate it
(And their Christmas decorations are booooring!! Far too minimalist I like it totally traditional - lots of greenery, twinkling lights, red, gold and purple. Sorry I know that's off topic)It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0 -
Do other people also find that the quality of M&S clothing has gone down? I got a top and some yoga pants and they were really flimsy! (Got them on-line and couldn't be 'arrised to send them back :rotfl:, and the top is nice just not as thick as I hoped for an Autumn/Winter item!)
In preparedness news (to get back on track) ordering the wood for the fire this weekend (I hope), and I need to sort out the kitchen so we can store more canned items.

Thanks for all the info about usb's and computer stuff, think i will get the scanner out this weekend and copy some photo's and documents ( I love looking at photo's so would be very upset if i lost some of my favourites).
Another one here that looks for exits first, can't cope at all not having my bearings in a building (but then people may say ive lost a few ball-bearings or marbles?)
Happy prepping and sorting x WLLMoving towards a life that is more relaxed and kinder to the environment (embracing my inner hippy:D) .:j0 -
Just caught up with all the news, good to hear some good news for a change.
The storms seem to have stopped for now and we have hot sunshine again that is forecast for the weekend. It looks like it might be the end of this month before we need to light the fire so I can live with that. Everyone is boycotting the heating oil as its currently 1.45 a litre (cut from 1.65 because no one had the money to buy it.) Now we have the ton of wood I am not worried about the diesel. We got a good measure for our money and it burns slow and hot. We will use the open fire and the electric blanket on the bed when we need them.
Someone mentioned Martial law in Greece....well, nothing would surprise me to be honest. The journalist who published the list of tax evaders was acquitted of all charges yesterday. The politiicians involved are being questioned and reports have gone to the judicial system. Meanwhile many of the politicians are resigning rather than voting yes to the new cuts and measures next week and the politics is in chaos. There are many strikes, so much so I am going to have to make a list so I know what will be closed and when so I don't lose track.
The judges at the high court decided the pension cuts from last year and health cuts were unconstitutional in that they make citizens suffer and that they are therefore unlawful and the government should never have made them ...so that leaves the new cuts debatable to say the least....
I also saw a secretly released document that says the troika is going to refuse the next tranche of loan to Greece. There is no way for Greece to stay in the euro with how bad things are , and all the cuts are making it worse. The high taxes imposed on the working man here means many families have absolutely nothing left to get through the winter. There are collections of clothes, food and shoes for people with none all over the place and they are collecting donations of food outside all the supermarkets. We have some emergency money so we can cope with most things and can leave on the ferry if we have to.
I just wish they would announce we are out of the euro and let us start sorting the mess out. I think they are waiting till after the American election to give out the 'bad' news to be honest. But the weather friend of mine says he thinks another Atlantic storm is on its way for the same area around the day of the election. I do hope not, I don't think they could cope with much more and there would be nothing to stop it.
I realised today how few of the people were prepped for such an event. Petrol fights are breaking out because the cars are queuing for hours while the people with containers for generators need the fuel to run them for heat and light. Water is in very short supply and people just grabbed anything from the shops.
We are very well prepared for if the SHTF politically next week, the vote on the measures is at midnight on 12th November. My biggest problem will be all the phone calls and messages we will get asking if we are okay.....but its good to know people care and worry about us.
Meanwhile we are going to enjoy the sunshine this weekend. Going out for a nice Chinese meal for a treat (they do gluten free for me ) then to the karaoke to sing and make merry. Have a great weekend folks xxxx“The superior man, when resting in safety, does not forget that danger may come. This is a link to the winter storm story my weather friend told me about...its probably going to hit the same areas the Hurricane did... not good news....its going to be below freezing in the current awful conditions....it will hit around Wednesday

They have just announced it on CNN...it is based on European forecasts and models for that area.“The superior man, when resting in safety, does not forget that danger may come. When in a state of security he does not forget the possibility of ruin.” Confucius (551 BC - 479 BC):A0 -
Great to hear the perspective from Greece on what is going on. If more people were educated on prepping and being self sufficient there would be less stress all round. I feel bad or those in the Caribbean and USA after sandy struck. People are now looting for food and essentials.0
