;) I'm bearing down towards the big five-oh too, but a few years behind you. But I was a late adopter of IT as I have a foible of character which makes me techno-resistant. I adore them when they work properly but get very stressed when things go wrong because I don't have sufficient grounding to get myself out of IT-messes all the time and this makes me feel vulnerable.

I've just been performing a cull in My Documents and I have 97.6 MB left in there. I think this may be the computing equivalent of a small change jar?:rotfl:

Right, going to get off my derriere and go to the lottie to do about an hour, then nip into some CS on the way home. I'm acquiring pillar candles at the 50p-£1 mark when I can get them to add to the supplies.
Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

I just read this report and it makes very sad reading .One thing I did notice though was that many of those trolleys contained tins or undamaged bottled goods that were described as ruined. If they were undamaged they should be safe to eat. I don't blame the people for taking them and using them, good for them! It looks like the supermarket staff just threw the lot out and didn't sort through for things people could use.

    I saw this article yesterday.

    Hurricane Sandy aftermath.

At least nine people have died from carbon monoxide poisoning after using generators that were either inside their homes or too close to their homes.

Thanks 2tonsils, GQ and many others for great informative posts and keeping us all up to date.

Ooh Kittie...that doesn't sound good. We phone my MIL every day for a chat (she is 87) and I am trying to gradually introduce prepping to her thoughts, as I hate to think she might be left one day without heating or food because of something happening. She really feels the cold and usually has the heating set on ''bake to a crisp'' setting. When I go to stay I have to go out for a walk to cool off lol. We did convince her to get a nice electric blanket to warm up the bed and I know she has hot water bottles if the power is off.

Last night we were talking about the Hurricane and it was a good chance to talk about the people not being prepared for it even though they had some days warning. I mentioned her stocking up with food and the weather turning wintry in the UK. Just hope she will follow up on it. Although she lives in sheltered housing they don't keep that good an eye on the residents.

It has now gone very stormy looking here again after a beautiful morning of hot sunshine. I hope it keeps off , my OH is taking me out for a Chinese meal for a treat tonight!

Hope you all get prepping in earnest now for what sounds like a real wintry outlook.....Kittie do you have a link to that report or is it one you receive privately?

I know , but you would think in the middle of all that chaos they would give a thought to the people who have no provisions left to eat or drink. Perhaps I am putting too much faith in people using some common sense.....

The Red Cross is really coming out of this one badly, I have heard so many complaints about them not delivering aid to the people who are desperate for it. You would think with a country as advanced as America they would be in the middle of it helping people as soon as possible. It seems they learned very little from Hurricane Katrina.

There are lots of reports of people having to get food from bins and fights breaking out with weapons at gas stations and other places. Scary stuff!

    You're very welcome.
CDR would work, the only disadvantage being they hold less data than a DVD. For maximum compatibility buy 74 or 80 minute CDR (650 or 700 MB) the mini ones are cute but don't work in all types of drives and the 90 minutes ones can have compatibility issues.

Keep a copy on CD(s) in your flat and at your Mum's and a further copy on a thumb drive as EDC, that should cover most eventualities. When you add to the information, write a new set of CDs (that's usually the bit that gets forgotten). If you don't have one, invest in a CD Labelling Pen (a pack of three or four can usually be found in poundshops) some inks will damage CDs. Store them either in jewel cases or cardboard sleeves (if you have a few then a CD wallet will work just as well) basically you just need to protect them from scratches.

There aren't any ignorant questions, there can be bad answers and people who forget they had to learn the basics and fail to explain clearly.
    HTH

Another reason for burning a full new set of CDs when you update is that they don't last forever... Check carefully for cracks around the hole in the middle as they explode spectacularly when they go, usually destroying the drive as well, and are a b****r to clean up!
  • KITTIE - Thanks for the warning, we'll make sure everyone we know is aware of the potential for disruption and as prepared as they can be, Cheers Lyn xxx.

I made these this week from fleece blankets. The stripey ones are beige cream and brown but it did not show on the photo. I bought the red blankets from bee and queue for £3 each and the other two were donated by dd1 a while ago.
