    I've been Money Tipped!
    Wonderful news Alibobsy! :)

All this talk of chocolate is making me drool! Never mind I shall have to go make a mug of the drinking variety! Still surviving on soft foods, just bored! Tonight will be the third night of shepherds pie! but I know I am lucky to have enough to eat so will put a smile on my face (but it hurts to smile) I have a lovely bruise coming up, it looks like I have taken a punch to my jaw and in a way I guess I have! Just via a dentists drill rather than a fist! One more day of the strong anti biotics and then hopefully the side effects will go! I too have a lovely dentist, he always explains what he is about to do and is very gentle. I believe he trains other dentists to do implants so I knew I was in the right hands.

One thing I have got on with is my patchwork, I finished it today just got to work out how to make it into a quilt. I have watched countless you tube toturials today but getting nervous about actually getting on with it! I keep going back to the granny squares! :rotfl:

Getting cold here and it gets dark very early now, I am going to put on the lamps for a warm feel to the room.

Seeing what has happened to folk in usa has spurred me on with preparing for problems ahead of time. One person said they wish they had saved family photos, being stuck at home for a while it might be an idea to get back to scanning more photos and saving them on a memory stick and packing that into a bug out bag?

Right off to heat up that shepherds pie.............

:j ALIBOBSY, fantastic news about the OH, you must both be sooo relieved. Wonderful news.

BB glad your pooter is up and flying. Mine was 10 years old last month and has been pimped with twice as much RAM as the manufacturer intended (my pal the Computer Wizard turned up to do something else one day and had spontaneously-decided that I should have a 512 chip alongside my two 256s).

;) I just let him get on with it. Am now maxed-out on slots (whatever they might be) on the motherboard (this I can recognise by sight). It's all very wonderful.

Am chillaxing whilst waiting for a pal to come around for 7pm. Have cleaned everything and hidden the books on preparedness and survivalism in case he thinks I'm weird. Dunno why I bother we go back over twenty years so it's not like he doesn't know some of my foibles.

    All righty, the teapot calleth.................

  • Lots of lovely good news!

GQ thanks for the Shoebox Towers biog! I love older people and their tales. Loved the pensioners when I worked at RSPCA. They were so appreciative of the help and all had great life tales. When the white trash created havoc it was usually the littlest old lady that took them on and whipped their !!! into submission - using language we werent allowed to!!!

I am going to get a tin for USB sticks, hadnt eventhought of them getting wiped...

Husband is totes on the SHTF track too, which is nice. Planning mainly for weather related stuff trapping us in car or in flat. But also doing a small grab bag for us and cat. Althoughshe has a new electric heat pad and I dont think she'll give it up soon!
    NOT a NEWBIE!

I was planning on a baccy-type tin with the drive nestled in foam and the edges sealed with gaffer tape against dust ingress.
That's pretty much what we tested - we included a mini dvd, just because it fitted. We also tested a netbook in a larger tin and in one of those metal briefcases, the briefcase didn't protect the netbook. (I'm a geek, I was even paid to do this :) disaster recovery plans for businesses.
Now, I've never bought a USB drive (have 6 USB ports on my steam-driven desktop PC) so is there anything I need to know? I assume that they don't all have the same capacity? Any tips would be appreciated.
Buy a larger capacity then you think you need - you can always use spare space for electronic versions of reference books. Then buy another the same size but a different brand. There is very little (if any) difference in quality between the branded drives (there are some poor quality unbranded ones on the market - and there isn't generally much price difference).
Don't buy one with built in security features, if you need to protect some files you would be better off using a zip archive with password protection than relying on the drive's security. (One less point of potential failure). I've used thumb drives for quite a few years and only had a couple which have died in use (I've had several which were DOA)
Having said that thumb drives aren't regarded as archive quality storage, if you have a DVD writer, then backup information to DVDs and keep a copy at your folks (in addition)

Alibobsy:- Pleased that it's good news for you both.:T
Mrslurcherwalker:- That must be a huge relief for you. Bet you feel like you have aged!

I have spent the day being quite demented. my DD started having contractions at half six this morning and finally had baby Grace at ten to seven tonight. DH and I have spent the day pacing the house distractedly! We are so relieved and thrilled. I may need to eat chocolate!:D
