The canteen were I worked some twenty years or so ago did a very popular curry on a Thursday, the ingredients included three different varieties of PAL dog food. I've no idea how this recipe came about but it was certainly tasty. (Being the person responsible for ensuring the cook had all her necessary supplies, I know rather than suspect the ingredients used.)
love the idea of your commune collective though  - have there been any hiccups with red tape along the way? did you have to sign documents to say investments were part of the collective and not to be claimed back by individuals? I only ask as I remember having an issue with a joint purchase of a washing machine in a shared house and when one girl moved out she wanted to take it with her!Blah0 -
Aaaaaaaaaaargh having trouble with the 'puter so it looks like I will have to strip it down today, I did all the software checks last night so I will take the cover off and give it a good hoover out and check the fan, because it has been making weird noises all week. Good job I know how to do things like this it would cost a fortune in pc world. Luckily if I can't sort it I have a good friend who is an A++ engineer and has been teaching me bits and bobs over the years and I know that he will sort it.

Morning all, DD2 is back safe and sound and is currently in baggage reclaim waiting for the luggage. I'm sitting here not knowing whether I want to laugh or cry at the moment, as I feel like doing both. The relief is almost unbearable but I'm so happy they are out of New York and feel so worried for their friends who live there and all the other people who have now to deal with the aftermath of the hurricane. Thank you all for your support and good wishes, It has really kept me going through what has been an extremely difficult few days, Bless you all, Cheers Lyn xxx.0

We have a slight gap in the storms so catching up quickly while the going is good. Had torrential rain all night and high winds and just as I got to town for my shopping today all hell broke loose with the weather. Hence the flooded roads on the way home. Now safely back but it looks like its on its way again....
Stocked up on cupboard goods as my freezers are too full to put anything else in...I did find room for a small tub of cherry and vanillla ice cream though....mmmmmm
Still too warm to put the fire on here but glad we got the ton of wood stacked and undercover before all this rain. I heard of some villages and crops being devastated in Northern Greece but won't know much until the evening bulletin. It seems all the bad weather is hitting us from Italy. People keep saying its hurricane sandy but unfortunately that hurricane is still hovering over Canada...if anyone get it it will be the UK in about ten days time.
My friend just said the UK will get serious storms and gale force winds later....so stock up on chocolate and get snuggled under the fleece folks!“The superior man, when resting in safety, does not forget that danger may come. When in a state of security he does not forget the possibility of ruin.” Confucius (551 BC - 479 BC):A0 -
There should always be room for ice cream
Im on a roll this morningCurrently looking at water purification tablets, anyone know what happens when they go out of date? I guess using some that are a few months after expiry won't kill you but might not be as affective in purifying the water.

Good morning everyone.
Re almond milk - please remember that nuts can go rancid and rancid almonds are highly toxic. I think almonds have a shelf life of about 18 months, but don't quote me. (Rancid almond poisoning was the subject of the one and only episode of Casualty I can remember watching. The behaviour of the medical/nursing staff was so divorced from reality, I gave up half way through.)Pipneyjane that has had me instiches, omg i am envious of your multi language skills!!
Don't be. I can only swear. I can't hold a conversation. :rotfl:Just listening to R4 on the hurricane in Manhatten - fab comment from nurse coming of a long shift "I found my head torch, I found a bottle of red wine, I have my knitting" Now THATS my kind of prepared!
Mine, too. I think I've just found my role model.:beer:They don't come into the Towers. We can't even get the local free newspapers delivered because no one has the bottle to walk around here, apparently. Which is ridiculous; posties come here 6 days a week with no problems.
Having divested myself of my Halloween office ensemble and ornamental spider head-dress, I changed into my civvies and re-acquainted myself with how to change the batteries on my darling little Petzl head torch, which I have an unreasonable fondness for. My headtorch takes AAAs as does my back-up LED torch so they and some packs of spares are now in the BOB.
As well as being just the ticket for camping, imagine if you were trying to cook or wash dishes in the dark? How useful a hands-free torch would be.
Petzls aren't cheep-cheep but there are other brands which are more economical and it would be a useful addition to anyone's kit, IMO, anyway.
.....
Prepare for the worst and sleep easy at night. I DO know where my towel is (Hitchiker's Guide reference). I even have peanuts.;)
What's the light quality from the Petzl? Could you knit and/or read with it? (See my comment above.) The only LED lights I've seen give out a very blue light that's hard on the eyes.
On an American board I frequent, someone reminded me that disasters/emergencies don't just happen when we're at home. This was actually in the context of a threatening letter received by the workplace of another poster. (The letter had been written by a former colleague.) While most of us are unlikely to be confronted with a lunatic brandishing a gun (residents of Shoe Box Towers aside), a lot is still applicable. After all, anyone who lives/works in London could have been caught up in the 7/7 bombings. I'll sum up the advice here:- Know your location. Know your exit routes and the alternatives and know where they lead. Always consider how you will leave a building if the main route is blocked/unsafe. Can you navigate to the stairs in the dark? What happens if the basement car park flash-floods?
- Know your colleagues so that you can identify intruders who may steal from you/the company or otherwise threaten your safety.
- Know the location of the first aid box. Have you done a first aid course? Do you need a refresher? Would you be confident enough to use it?
- Tampons are excellent for plugging bullet wounds and stab wounds (however, if the knife is still there, don't remove it). Sanitary pads can be used to dress wounds and staunch bleeding.
- Movement and noise can get you killed. That's what identifies your location to a shooter. (Incidentally, "cover" is something that will absorb a bullet; anything else you hide behind is just camoflage.)
- Store scans of your most sensitive documents online say in your Yahoo or gmail account. I'd include copies of your house insurance, car insurance, driver's licence, passport, birth certificate, marriage certificate, land registry record for your home, etc. It is highly unlikely that a disaster hitting the UK will affect servers in America and they backup to countries on the far side of the planet.
- Ensure that any thumb drives or external hard disk drives are security enabled and make sure your password consists of numbers and digits. That way, if they're stolen, they won't be easy to crack.
