:) I suppose the difficulty is, would anyone in the UK have devices capable of reading another country's ID cards, or even be familiar enough with the appearance of the proper ones to pick up a good forgery?

I have had a photocard driver's license for many years and that serves as a de-facto ID card for a lot of purposes. Even banks are happy with them as proof of ID. Gawd help the non-driver and non-passport holder in the UK, they can have real difficulty finding an acceptable ID document.

Anyone hear about the elderly Texan driver who gets stopped by the police?

The policeman asks: 'Got any ID?'

    Texan replies: 'About whut?' :)

I remember well the craze for brown in the 70s, I hate brown and love blues and greens and it was a nightmare trying to get anything new.
I also remember a granny's house that had an outside loo.. I wouldn't go in at night because the moths were bigger than me!

I'm still using the bright orange grater I bought in Timothy White's in 1973 :D

:p Hell, Mum still has 1970s orange tubbyware in daily use. And her kitchen in the 1970s was painted in bright orange gloss. On the walls. I flinch when I see that particular hue even to this day.

I remember the 1970s pretty well. Have often hoped to forget some of the less tasteful moments in fashion, hairstyling and interior decor, but alas, there is only so much you can do with Acme Mind Bleach for those Difficult to Remove Mental Stains.

:p But of course. The brown stuff is the essential building block of life. Taking the pi$$ is also important, since the world's grasslands are apparently dependant on mammal pi$$ for their nitrogen supply and thus fertility.

I read it in the Nat Geo one day at the Dr's so it's gotta be true, hey?

Righty, delightful tho this nonsense be, I have people to do and things to annoy. Or possibly things to do and people to annoy, have been awake since silly o'clock and up since 4 am, so getting a bit hazy around the edges.

Play nicely, children, and *in best Joyce Grenfell voice* Don't do that, Bob!

Except batten down the hatches guys.

    Read this, thought of you.
Out Of The Night That Covers Me (Invictus)

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
    For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
    Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

    William Ernest Henley (1849-1903)
That sounds like a classic case of premature extrapolation.

:) Here's something else. I bet several of you can recognise where this came from.

    Litany Against Fear.

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little death. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will train the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

Greyqueen - it's Dune isn't it? Years since I read it though. Might look my old copy out and have a re-read.
