    :) Morning all.

One thing which has come to my attention in the last few working days is the amount of ex-pat Brits who are contacting us about registering to vote. Some of them have been overseas for 30-40 + years and are LIVID that you lose your right to vote in UK elections after 15 years overseas.

I personally think that should be 1 year, but I don't get to write the laws. Of course, if these very long-term ex-patriates had been in contact with British councils more recently, they would have known that they were long out of eligibility to vote. They haven't been interested in parliamentary elections, or local elections, they want to be registered so they can vote in the EU referendum.

    Interesting times, hey?

Does this mean that having been overseas 10 years I am eligible? And if so how?

I think anyone holding a British passport should be allowed to vote in the EU referendum, since it will affect future abilities to travel and work.

I am quite an active former trade unionist and legally-minded - hence I choose every word I use carefully to be the correct word I mean.

I agree. You do think very carefully about what word to use and how to evoke the deepest emotion possible in the reader.

Unfortunately for me, although skillful with the correct intention, I feel it has no place on a friendly forum because the emotion you evoke in me is not very pleasant. MITSTM, sorry Ceridwen as I read your blog the other day about how to heal a cut and the evil eye causing accidents and finally have proof that it is you, although I worked it out long, long ago, I feel that I have tried very hard to interact possively with you over the past few weeks but enough is enough. I say goodbye to you and look forward to enjoying all the threads I used to without having to read things that nit pick at sad or hard times in my life.

  • Any posts I make have never been "personal" to you Fuddle (or to CTC) and I have been somewhat surprised that you seem to have taken a few as being personal - when they were very "general" comments.

I thought we were "getting on okay" recently.

As a personal comment - I hope things resolve well with your daughters problems at school.

  • This world is made of many variants of personality, many different life experiences and sets of circumstances and also many different ways of seeing life and in the main we all rub along not always agreeing with each other but appreciating other folks points of view and seeing them as valid even if their philosophy doesn't match that of ourselves on a personal level, we're adults, that's how it works. Just once in a while though we come across personalities so very different from our own that it's gritted teeth as soon as you read the posts. That's normal human behaviour too and you don't have to agree, disagree , even though I know I'll get shouted at the 'Ignore option' button can be opted for which makes the problem 'go away'. Most of us are aware that what we post could be hurtful and taken personally which makes us think VERY carefully about 'how' we say things but generally we do say them and no one is put out. Some folks say it anyway regardless and we all get disgruntled. I've met a few folks across the years that just 'don't fit the mould of conventionality', who don't see why they can't say whatever they want to and don't see why they shouldn't shout down, criticise and ridicule anyone else regardless of the consequences. They are of course within their technical rights to do so because we have freedom of speech BUT it doesn't make them popular and it does cause anger and upset and reaction. I don't actually think that anyone posts inflammatory posts because they do actually intend to be hurtful and press on an already sore spot but it does matter what other folks feel and consideration for your fellow posters is always a much better thing to display. There is room for us all, it's just much more pleasant when we all get on isn't it?

Well said. I've been trying to post something useful the whole time since the last post on this, and failing.

    Thanks, Mrs LW.

I have some brilliant wind up lanterns, very useful if the power goes. They give out a really good light, I have some torches as well but the lanterns are quite attractive and easy to use. Our cooking is half gas half electric which also gives a bit of a fallback. I would worry about meds if things got bad, my thyroid has pretty well given up the ghost and I'm not sure how long I would manage without my thyroxine.
