This might sound horrible, but should things start to go really down hill, I'd consider popping to p@h and picking up three or four 'bunnies' (a jack and three does likely).
I've trapped and skinned rabbits before (the thing that sticks with me is the smell) and modern pet rabbits do seem to have been bred to have a lot of 'meat'. Good for me and the cats (at least short term).
Pinnygigs might also be a sensible option, but I find them much cuterThat sounds like a classic case of premature extrapolation.

Nuatha you sound a dab hand in handling cooking game.
Is it because you like it, or can you get a good cheap/ free supply in shooting season??Work to live= not live to work0 -
If I remember rightly newshadow.. Even though rabbitvis a good clean meat. It can't be eaten day in and day out due to the lack of certain things???
I think the best rabbits are the big new Zealand whites, which are used in commercial rabbit meat farming..
I have a rabbit in the freezer too. Which I still haven't got my head around cooking yet ..but I will some day, and then if I like it, I might get some meat rabbits avatar n to breed.. But while we can afford to rear and have our pigs killed and butchered I keep the rabbit idea on the back burner..Work to live= not live to work0 -

There's not much meat on virtual rabbits, CTC.0 -

Short term yes, as CTC mentions they aren't a long term main food source, but if you're aware of the issues and compensate accordingly then they could form a major part of your diet. I've no idea how nutritionally sound they are for felines, a lack of knowledge I must remedy.COOLTRIKERCHICK wrote: »Nuatha you sound a dab hand in handling cooking game.

A bit of both, I no longer shoot, but can get a decent supply in season. I enjoy cooking and eating game, actually I enjoy cooking and eating most things. I tend to enjoy most game fairly fresh, whereas I prefer my beef and mutton to have hung for a while.
I don't see any point in cooking and eating things I don't enjoy while there's an alternative - other than keeping my hand in. I do cook and eat less of a range than I used to, as Herself is somewhat picky, so venison and shellfish tend not to be on the menu very often. She doesn't like pork or mushrooms either, but I have to draw the line somewhere and still cook these (generally for meals where she isn't around).0 -
Taste delicious, but when prepared reminded me very strongly of my a-level biology rat dissection...
At least you're familiar with the structure
I once went out for a meal with a youth work team I was part of, which happened to include my former biology mistress. She actually commented on the quality of dissection of my trout, apparently it had improved from my school days.0 -

ignoring the fact that I have beautifully spayed house rabbit in my home I think rabbit is low in fat and to live off it would mean problems. I tend to think that it would be nothing a bit of lard couldn't fix.
It's a good idea. Rabbits eat grass and loads of vegetation from dandelions to raspberry leaves. I would think about it definately should I feel I need to. Its an idea I had not though of at all.0 -
I think to aid a rabbits digestive system its constantly got to be munching.. Especially stuff like hay. When we had pet rabbits the vet said not for then to be fed a load of rich cabbage etc all in one go, as the gut couldn't cope with it.
Re- rabbit and cats. I should imagine it's like feed chicken to cats. It lacks certain vitamins which the cat needs, so if feeding a fresh meat diet to cats you have got to give things like heart and liver for a balanced diet.Work to live= not live to work0
