The RNLI have plenty of money Nuatha - maybe they can share it with mountain rescue (they were told by the charity commission at one point that they had to spend more of it rather than sitting on it...).
I remember another national charity having a serious surplus a few years back, when asked why its didn't stop fundraising for a few years saying it didn't dare fall out of the public consciousness. Many charities are nothing but big businesses these days, which is one of the reasons I tend to support small local outfits.
I did go out - if the trees had been bending too much I'd have turned around and come home, but it was actually OK. I'm hoping I don't lose any slates - there's one on the house that has slipped and needs fixing, and a couple on the garage, but they've been like that for a while. I lost one last year in a gust, but the rest of them should be pretty well secured.
Like Ivyleaf, I'm very relieved I had my trees down (they were rotten as well, all 5 of them) as at 60ft + they would have caused a lot of damage. I'm still burning them, which helps offset the cost - and probably will be for another couple of years!
Pleased you're safe and hope there's no damage.
The wind here finally seems to be easing, though the forecast has it continuing through tomorrow.0 -
Really blowing a gale, here now.0

obviously other people have had a sleepless night too. I hate the wind, always have done. It seems to do something to the bodies energy, I know that it makes children and animals wild. We are more controlled, so where does the energy go? I feel like going to look at the sea, I love seeing the crazy waves0

My sleepless night was more to do with the fact that my jet lag is failing to go away...0

Was puzzled last night - I think I'm less than 50 miles from MrsLW & Greenbee and it was calm & dry here, just a gentle breeze! However it's not unknown for us to be sitting in our very own climate anomaly; on the rare occasions that it snows down here, we can see it on the hills all around us, but never a flake falls here. That picture of the whole UK blanketed in white from a few years back? We're the little brown bit at the bottom. And we can set off for the beach 4 miles away in blistering sunshine, only to find it under a blanket of grey fog when we find a parking space!Angie - GC Jul 25: £225.85/£500 : 2025 Fashion on the Ration Challenge: 26/68: (Money's just a substitute for time & talent...)0

Was wild and woolly here last night but much calmer now although quite a lot colder than it has been of late.0

I'll admit that money tends to go to the local independent lifeboat since the RNLI decided to rearrange its arrangements in this area. But thank you for the information.

There is a need for some to maintain surpluses such as relief work when there is an emergency but these are few and far between and really should be limited to certain charities. It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.0 -

It's raining. And I wanted to put my washing on the line to get rid of the horrible smell of the hotel laundry detergent. I'll just have to keep rewashing, but airing works best0 -
thriftwizard That seems to be taking the concept of a "microclimate" to extremes!
GreyQueen thanks for the reminder of that amazing scenery :T
moneyistooshort I'm so glad you were able to visit your mother and that she was better when you left her
I'm in an agony of indecision atm - my brother is in hospital in Germany and it sounds as though he's, how shall I put it, not at all well, though managing to text. As he's been transferred from a local hospital to one in Munich (I don't think the local doc knew what to do with him, so passed him on) it might be possible to go over for a day to see him. I couldn't manage alone, but DS would come with me. We both speak a little German.
They are waiting for test results at present.
OH is saying "If you want to go, we'll find the money" but I don't think we can afford it atm really. And I've no idea how far the hospital is from the airport and how much taxis each way would cost, or how I could possibly find out.
If I tell brother we want to come, he'll tell me not to be silly, it's much too expensive, etc (much as I know he'd be thrilled to see me, as it's difficult for his wife to visit.)
I suppose it would be best to wait until we know how bad things are, though if he turns out to be dying I suspect he won't tell me and will instruct his wife not to tell me (because I'm his little sister and he doesn't want me to worry *rolls eyes*).
AAAARRRGH!!!!
Sorry, just needed to vent.
