There are a few predictions that are saying 2016 will be the hottest year ever, anyone got ideas for preps that can be made to combat very hot weather should the predictions be in any way accurate? We made one sensible alteration to the house last year when we had the very high up landing window which had previously been a fixed pane made into an opening window so that we can draw a cross breeze upstairs if we open the bathroom window too and cool the upper floor at night. I'm wondering if a ceiling fan light fitting might be useful in cooling down really humid nights, shouldn't be too expensive either. Any ideas welcome!0

If you see cheap cotton curtains and have access to a strong curtain rail, adding a wet curtain to the window and drawing it across will reduce temperatures - tip from Darwin (Aus). If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0

How about an Air Cooler?

Isn't it typical?
I washed two pairs of jeans, and, since it was sunny and warm out, put them on the line to dry.
Next thing you know, it's raining, and the jeans are soaking wet again.0 -

We didn't find ceiling fans that effective and removed them. We replaced with a large vertical oscillating fan that we could direct as needed (and move from room to room if needed).
Putting a tray of cold water (with a couple of ice cubes) in front of the fan helped - but if humidity is already a problem then I suspect this wouldn't be as welcome.0 -
On very hot days I already do the old fashioned thing of opening all the windows but the pulling the curtains on the windows that are in the sun, opening the curtains once the sun has gone round to the front of the house and then pulling the curtains in those rooms. It does help to keep the house cooler than the outside temperature, you can feel the difference walking from the rooms that haven't had closed curtains to those that have.
Thanks for the info re Ceiling fans NUATHA, He Who Knows had already said they might be too noisy for use in a bedroom anyway. RAS thanks for the cotton curtains being damped down that is a very useful one.0 -
GF left a lot of her vegetables last night and they ended up in the bin. Unfortunately Mr Mouse smelt them and looks like he spent all night chomping away at them.
Crafty little sod completely ignored four(!) mouse traps in the bottom of the cupboard. I just washed the old bait out and re-baited with peanut butter.
Any other thoughts?0
