Re our recent debate on women defending themselves from these recent mass groping attacks or the like (Cologne, etc).
There was an attempted rape of a 17 year old woman in Denmark recently in this category. She defended herself successfully with a pepper spray and managed to prevent him raping her. She was prosecuted for using the pepper spray (as its illegal in Denmark).
However - her punishment for the pepper spray was a fine equivalent to £50. She should not have been fined obviously.
However - 'Nuff said. £50 is a small price to pay for maintaining our rights to safety.
I would imagine she probably hasn't had to pay the fine either - as I would think her friends/relatives would have a whip-round to pay it for her.0 -

Sorry, she knowingly broke the law and you expect other people to fund the punishment.
I have no problem with the fact she used an illegal weapon to defend herself.
I have no problem with the fact that she was subsequently prosecuted (and I presume her attacker was also prosecuted, you don't mention that side of things).
I act as I see fit, if I break the law then I should expect to pay the consequences. Incidentally there was easily enough information in that discussion for anyone who read it to be able to legally defend oneself in exactly the same way (and probably more effectively, since what is generally sold to the public as pepper spray is not particularly effective).0 -

What have I missed??
Re- pepper sprays, two wrongs dont make a right..Work to live= not live to work0 -
Agreed that its not actually necessary to use pepper spray - as one can perfectly well use something legal (eg that spray deodorant or Deep Heat).
Just pointing out how minimal the punishment was for using something (in a valid cause - ie preventing rape) that may/may not be legal in our country. So - for something that definitely IS legal....
The woman wasn't an aggressor. She was defending herself from an aggressor.0 -

I would imagine she probably hasn't had to pay the fine either - as I would think her friends/relatives would have a whip-round to pay it for her.My reading of the article was that the young girl may be fined 500 krone, not that she already has. It would be political suicide if she is actually fined, and I imagine it won't happen. This barely-more-than-a-child was knocked down on the street and had a man trying to tear her clothes off. If she'd actually killed him, I would have considered her actions justified, personally.

Here here GQ.
It's interesting that while there might be a legal difference in what we use to defend ourselves - if our 'legal' methods have the capacity to hurt or do damage - morally it's much the same imo.
Personally I would rather defend myself from attack by whatever means and deal with any legal consequences afterwards than have my life traumatised by rape - or be dead even. It's a no brainer actually.0 -

And as her assailant has apparently got away scot-free, how could they make a case that she harmed him with pepper spray? Just that she had something in her possession that she shouldn't have owned.
I have zero tolerance for the mindset which wants to put its sexual organs (or other items) into other people's orifices by force. These are devastating crimes which ruin lives and should be treated with the utmost severity by the police and the criminal justice system, wherever they occur.
I imagine that 17 year old's parents are terrified, holding their daughter close, and thanking their lucky stars for the pepper spray. And that many thousands of others will be trying to source the product for themselves/ their loved ones.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.
