Does anybody else wonder if the govt are going to be forced to get off their fat well-fed collective a$$es and DO somethiing about flooding
NOTHING will happen, I'm afraid, until London and/or major population centres in the South-East are badly hit. Look what happened when Somerset was under water and the Thames was threatening to flood - all the sandbags were whisked away from Somerset, though they were still very much needed there!Angie - GC Aug25: £374.16/£550 : 2025 Fashion on the Ration Challenge: 26/68: (Money's just a substitute for time & talent...)0 -
The bridge in our town is not usable and it could take months to sort out. Our Sainsbugs was flooded and had to be closed completly
for weeks.
Only way to get to shops and chemist is a shuttle bus so a half hour errand takes well over two hours. Just glad I did not have to be evacuated by the army and that I had supplies of food etc.
Just heard that my offer on the bungalow has been accepted :j and hope to be moved by February. Have contacted the EAs and solicitor and will go down later for forms etc.

If is any comfort quite a few in the north of England and other areas not in the media/political/moneymaking areas feel much the same. I realised that you were venting about the "luvvies" etc and not the lovely down to earth people I have met wherever I have lived."This site is addictive!"

Was wondering how the bridge was affecting you. Glad you personally are OK if somewhat inconvenienced.
Any chance they might install a pedestrian bridge as I understand will happen at Elland? Think the main bridge there will take a year to replace? If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -
I think I'll be shopping out there - must make time for it! I'm keeping a vague eye on the weather and it does look like they're finally getting winter. As you say, dry rather than wet. I really do need to spend some time planning my packing - which means working out my laundry days!
greenbee not sure what part of Canada you are going to, but my family in ottawa say its the mildest Christmas they have EVER had. My canadian aunt says its her first green christmas ever in her 68 yrs.
The local kids were out on the road playing road hockey in shorts and t-shirts on christmas day lol. Mind you they don't feel the cold as much as us so are probably a bit hardier and their idea of shorts weather isn't the same as ours lol.

Boiler packed up this am
First morning back at work for Mr D and school for Grunt.... cold showers :rotfl:
Woodburner lit and all toasty waiting for engineer to come
Mr D is from Aberdeenshire and his mother still lives there. He rings her regularly and her comment on the situation there this week was "Blowing a hoolie and not been able to go out for a walk"
A bit of an understatement methinks. She never says what is really going on so that we don't worry (so obviously more worry!)
We are keeping a close eye on events but know she has people looking out for her.
Congrats on the bungalow purchase, ElonaNot dim.....just living in soft focus

Its good to read some good news. Hope it all goes smoothly for you.
Speaking of news, approx 1 in 7 of the population live in London, its hardly surprising that news media focus a lot of their attention on the capital. The Scottish flood warnings make the home page of BBC News, (admittedly not a major headline, but above the cut) Few if any news media are unbiased, most have political agendas and cater to specific biases among the general public because that is how they make money. There again, social media is hardly unbiased because people tend to be biased.0 -
Cumbria got hit with the flooding first and we were wall to wall news. Then Yorkshire and Lancashire got a dose. Still big news though maybe a bit less. I just think the media is bored with it all now that it is Scotlands turn.
And of course it won't be over for many months - maybe even into next year for many of those affected..0 -

Toronto (currently -14), Montreal (currently -18), Vancouver (0 and snowing), Calgary (-7). Calgary is likely to be the coldest... hence spending the weekend in Vancouver as it's by the sea so tends to be a bit warmer... but I may not go out0 -
Thanks GREENBEE re: the boiler info. I think I really should get the plumber out, get it sorted properly, and follow him around watching so I know i'm doing it right from now on.
Mrs.L..... :rotfl: I don't think people down south are bad at all...! I'm not from up north, and spent probably a third of my childhood in london, so certainly don't have anything against folk. Just that things outside of there should be better reported. (hope I didn't cause offence.)
Asbo is happy, heating been on all day. Am going to hunt out old jacket for her.
MITSTM...... she has any amount of rugs, blankets, duvets, throws, cushions she can have access to around the house...... she simply likes the staff to ensure she has what SHE thinks is suitable...:D. She loves a huge padded suede coat I have, but she ain't getting that yet...I have to keep it locked away or she'd steal it.
Time to get up, look at boiler again, text plumber, get some food. The rain has stopped here....thats good, it was forecast to keep going for days.
Stay safe those still with rain.Yep...still at it, working out how to retire early.:D....... Going to have to rethink that scenario as have been screwed over by the company. A work in progress.0
