Ooo thank you, I feel like a right twit now, for asking.

But this does prove, you do need to check every bit of info you hear/ read

Absolutely no need to feel like a twit - it happens I've come across this tale before, so had an idea it was an urban myth and therefore knew it was likely to be in Snopes.
My post certainly wasn't meant to put anyone down - just help you be able to check the story. (I'm not saying you felt put down, just I hate the fact you felt a twit for asking a perfectly reasonable question)

What confuses me is the person in the group that you were with, CTC - are they lying? trying to get attention? genuinely mistaken about the truth of what they've been told by their relation? is the relation lying/attention-seeking etc? It fascinates me how it spreads. CTC has stopped it in its tracks, which is great because rumours can cause mayhem. I'm still interested in the transmission, tho ...

There's rarely any logic to how these tales start, but people tend to abbreviate the chain of who told who etc. Details also get edited to keep it local - not through malice, just because people assume what they've been told is local. Tales tend to get embellished in transfer as well, the classic example being Chinese Whispers.

Went back to dentist again today, she says it's a dry socket+ infection. Got more antiBs. Was thinking in the car what on earth life is going to be when we have no antibiotics any more. I've been in awful pain for a week, honestly worse than childbirth. What on earth did people do in the past?

In short.....people died of bad infections before anti/bs. I often rely on these, so they are part of my stock pile when I can.

Hope it gets better soon, I haven't had a dry socket, but apparently they are awful. Keep the pain killers up to speed to keep a therapeutic level too.
Yep...still at it, working out how to retire early.:D....... Going to have to rethink that scenario as have been screwed over by the company. A work in progress.
  • Nuatha.. I just felt like a twit, for more or less believing/ fell for it..

I think something will eventually happen somewhere in Britain again.. Its just the waiting game.. And when you are on tender hooks so to speak , you just more sensitive to things...

I don't think it's best for me to say what city it is then, if this is a well known myth rumour

If antibiotics disappeared overnight then we would have to look to simple home remedies, using herbs and spices. There is evidence that stuff like lavender, mint, thyme, turmeric and garlic can have medicinal uses, so it's worth searching your library for books on home herbal remedies.

But now you know about them, you aren't likely to be caught again.
A terrorist attack could happen, its a lot less likely than a manhole cover flying into the air or other electrical fires, gas explosions, buses driving into supermarkets cars crashing through a living room window, the ground opening up below your feet or many other accidents that will cause mayhem. All we can do is stay alert, be aware of safe locations and exit routes and if something happens keep calm.
I was in a shop a week ago and spotted a chained fire exit (local authority and fire brigade informed) two days later I was back in that shop and no chain on the exit - problems that I thought had been solved years ago are still reoccurring.
I don't worry about a terrorist attack, I don't worry about being nuked, both are possible, they are also a lot less likely than any number of life changing events that I can prep for - and those preps are still useful in the event of unexpected happenings.
One thing that is certain, if I let the stress and worry get to me I'd be shortening my life expectancy and having a lower quality of life.

There's a lot of lessons we can learn from traditional and folk remedies, there is also an awful lot that is downright dangerous if not potentially lethal, doing research now could lead to a lot less problems if the pressure is on (and we are rapidly heading for a post effective antibiotic world)

Clove oil is the traditional one for toothache. DH had an abscess forming one day last week. Luckily we managed to get a same day appointment at the dentist but it was in the afternoon and meanwhile it was getting more and more painful during the day. So I got him to dab some clove oil on the gum and it really did help - for a while but, sadly, not for long. When we got there, the entist had the tooth out within minutes and all was well

After that, the pain of the bill was nothing LOL (no NHS dentists round here)
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

Learning about how the human body works, how to keep it clean and in good working order, and how to treat any health problems with the ingredients you have in your own kitchen or garden - all examples of useful skills and knowledge should the worst happen.

This is my attitude entirely. Terrorism is very unlikely to impact me directly and so I am not really going to have panic attacks over things that are lower risk than day to day events like crossing the road or driving to work.

So my preps are based around the real risks of a financial crisis and unemployment then having to live off unemployment benefits. Large food stocks will eliminate the risks of hyper inflation and even out the impact of inflation until then. I am looking at cost cutting so that I get value for money from as much as possible. So cooking from scratch helps keep the food bills down. Making and using DIY cleaning agents does the same with cleaning costs. Having a small gas stove and pans allows me to cook when there are power cuts. Plus perfect for camping trips. Having plenty of books and games means I do not have to worry about entertainment if things are grim.
It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.

Is anyone watching Ben Fogle's series about people who gave up 'civilisation' to live new lives in 'wild' UK? Sorry if this has been mentioned.
I think it was last week they showed some woman who had gone to the extreme of living in a hut in woodland with no water or electricity. It had cost her her marriage. Last night they featured a family on a sheep farm in the Yorkshire Dales. Missed the beginning but came in when one of her many kids was demonstrating his home made candle/taper - basically a reed which had been dipped in fat.
I missed the part about how they funded the farm in the first place. It seems to me that money is still the backer for many back to nature lives. For example woodland woman actually owned the land from her previous existence.

I think when you read of folks being defiant and saying they will not be cowed by terrorism, it's more a matter of finding it hard to believe it will happen to you. When as a teen I got swept out to sea, my first thought was one of incredulity as in 'but this only happens to other people'. And mostly of course, it does.
If on the other hand there was credible evidence that terrorists were going to be targeting the no 59 bus into town at 9.30am, would I be getting on that bus at 9.30am? Hell no...:D
