ahhh!! there is quite a bit of scare-mongering going on here lately. No need for it tbh. Too many extreme `what if` scenarios. It`ll scare the s**t out of some people who are already feeling vulnerable and no point saying `don`t read` as many will already be sucked into the thread0

but, just imagine .... what if they did happen!
seriously tho, like what? I dont have time to read all the posts in detail, but what are the 'what if's' that you think are extreme? from what I see most are based on personal experience but happy to be challenged on that opinion VxBlah0 -

kittie, I hestitate to disagee with you as I hold you in such respect as an expert on so many things, but I feel that a thread with SHTF in its title is plainly about a certain kind of subject and isn't trying to lure readers in under false pretenses.
Some people perusing the list of threads available for their reading pleasure will want to read it and some won't. The fact that the thread consistantly sits on Page 1 of Old Style and we have new MSE posters coming in all the time to say how valuable they find it, speaks for itself, IMO.
If people do accidentally wander in and deem subject either too scary or too silly, surely they'd just wander out again and do something else with their internet time? To do otherwise would be like forcing yourself to read a pornographic novel from cover to cover then writing to the publisher to complain that it was indecent.Vanoonoo, on the lighter side of SHTF, if you want me to get a vintage bus to Greece, you need to get cracking with sourcing me one as they take an awful long time to get anywhere. We can load the tinned tommies and FB pies aboard as emergency rations. For ballast on the return journey, I recommend Mythos beer (the bigger bottles, please). I'm partial to the brew but will be consuming my share once we're back off the road, of course.:)

how vintage do we want it? http://www.vintage-nottingham.co.uk/our-vintage-bus
as this one seats 64 I think it might suit for starters

Yes agree GQ... Kittie pet, if we all keep quiet because some will get spooked - that's when fear goes underground and people start to get seriously worried. Haul fear out into the light of day, take a poke at it and deal with it and you can walk away lighter xxx0

http://vintagelondonbus.com/hire/rm.htmI'll go with the RouteMaster, thanks. What I used to drive was actually an RT which was contemporaneous with the RM but a slightly-skinnier version for narrower streets. We have to consider those Greek mountain roads (I'm debating if we should have a prepper walking point to shoo away any goats as I have had experience of attitudinous flocks obstructing roads on Crete).
Right, better go to work. Laters, GQ xxEvery increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

I'll dish out the tickets - free to signed up members of course! I always fancied one of those twiddly ticket machines and a coin pouch full of change! Off to find a suitable hat :j
It's strange (as in whoooowa) the chat has turned to mob culture so to speak, as I was thinking out BOBs & what would be needed for our family stash when I suddenly recalled how I felt in the mid-90s. There was talk then of nuclear warheads & who had access to the Big Red Buttons, & being new to single parenthood with three kiddies under 10 I felt so vunerable should the worst happen. Every night for about 5yrs, I would sharpen the two carving knives & make sure they were easily accessable should they be required...
If the humongous t[STRIKE]h[/STRIKE]ird scores a direct hit...
I have visions of marauding hoards of friends & neighbours coming to take my carefully acquired stores, because they have failed to prepare their own. Because these people are actually known to me, would I be able to do the necessary to defend my own family's future?
So the question is, what would you do to defend yourself?
My second quandry is the medicines various rellies rely on to keep them going. Mutha's diabetes meds are delivered weekly, while our surgery refuse to fill prescriptions if they think you have more than a week's worth of meds left since your last refill. Stockpiling those is not an option..back to the drawing board there.
Pup goes manic when the window cleaner comes round, & will NOT pass a ladder unless there's a complete road between him & it on w-a-l-k-i-e-s so any rebuild will have to be done while we're not in :doh:Iggie has her own supply of tinned veg & pulses, & Pup eats our food anyways so that frees up a bit of space for MORE TINS :j
I also have to decide how long to feed the petsEven if we did have dog food, that would feed humans at a stretch (fry onions, garlic, add a bit of cream & a dollop of white wine vinegar & saute till tender..yep! Monsewer OllyVa's 7hr casseroles does come in handy
) so any pet owner is not immune. See? See! That's why I didn't want to have a pet in the first place..too many ways to break a heart
If you'll just excuse me *sniff, wipes solitary tear from cheek with hem of skirt* I'm off to watch ch5 to have a rant @ the telly

Kittie, last scenario we had I contributed to but I tried quite deliberately to make it not extreme. So, assume the grid is up but patchy, water and sewage not totally wiped out but a bit iffy, nothing bad enough to make you have to get out of Dodge but shortages likely to drag on for the rest of the winter and interminable queues interfering with life.
I don't think anyone could necessarily insulate themselves from that completely but it helped me to think about what I would do to minimise the impact. It hasn't changed the conclusion I reached some time ago that preparing for power cuts and being able to smooth out the effect of shortages in the shops pretty well covers most scenarios that are in my power to do anything about. It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0
