If I remember rightly, the troika reckoned the tax people hadn't been doing their job well enough so they were bringing in "hit men on bonuses" (my phrasing). Apparently a quote from one of the existing tax men said "how do you collect taxes from a pensioner who has nothing?"
It has been worrying me for a day or two and I didn't know whether to mention it.
Anyway, if you get stuck, I think there are a few of us on here who would be ready and willing to help you if possible.
Good luck
JaneIt scares the stuffing out of me, what they are doing and about to do to the people of Greece. I never fail to imagine that the Gubment here aren't watching with interest and wondering what they can get away with in the UK, should they deem it necessary. I've often thought that it's only a matter of time before they try US-style things like limiting your unemployment pay to 99 weeks maximum or replacing cash benefits with food stamps.
Some bliddy think-tank is probably drawing up the proposals somewhere in London as we speak. A pox on them.
Jamanda, my family were agricultural labourers until my Dad's generation who left the farms in the late 1950s when increasing mechanisation meant that fewer workers were needed. In the 1800s and early 1900s, we'd owned (very) small farms and smallholdings which got wiped out in the agricultural depressions. The last land passed out of the family when my great-grandad died in the 1950s. We still go to look at the outside of one of "our" farmhouses sometimes - it's derelict but Grade 2 listed and the land isn't with it any more. It was last "ours" in the 1920s.
My Dad's Dad was a farm labourer all his life, a very proud man, tall and stopped and softly-spoken. I only ever saw him angry the one time and that was when he recalled, in his seventies, something which had happened decades before.
He'd been out of work with a young wife and two small kiddies and had applied for National Assistance. A horrible little man in a suit had come to the house and ferretted into everything, totting up the value of what they had and even factoring in the 6 hens in the back garden. He did his calculations and said to Grandad that they could have X amount per week.
I can't remember what it was in pre-decimal currency but it was such a small sum that it would have bought ONE SMALL LOAF OF BREAD. And this was what the State thought a family of 4 who worked and paid tax was worth a week in their hour of need.
Grandad showed the Suit the door and told him that if he was that desperate for a loaf of bread he had family and friends who'd gladly give him a loaf for free.
Means-testing used to mean somebody poking around in your home and telling you to sell this thing or that thing before you'd get any help. I used to know older people (now passed over) who had experience of hiding belongings for their neighbours (and getting reciprocal help in their time of need) so that they wouldn't be obliged to sell the radio or whatever modest thing that the means-tester had their eye on.
Soooo, I'm wondering if the new incentivised tax-collectors of Greece, working in a system which has already robbed people of their pensions and contributed-for social benefits, is planning to make house calls to collect wedding rings etc from those little old ladies?
I've been on Crete several times and have talked to people who live there fulltime. Most Cretan Greeks seem to have guns (check out the bullet holes in the road signs). And we're not just talking shotguns; I've known of sub-machine guns in private ownership in ordinary village homes. The Greeks are a proud people and I really wouldn't fancy the chances of tax collectors in some parts of the country.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

GQ I agree. I'm thinking that it will only take one incident of this nature and the balloon will go up.
How can they just leave people to starve like that? How do they sleep?
I've been to Crete a few times and toured all around the island and love the place.
In my view what they are about to do to the Greek people will be no different to murder.0 -
I think I will cope with whatever comes as long as I have a minimal amount of food, a little water and a roof. I just hope, hope, hope I don't have to cope with civil unrest. Now that would see me curled up in a ball.
I think the unrest will hit cities/large towns first...if they go after anyone it will be those seen as authority figures/institutions and as they can't get at the politicians/bankers etc...the one's that will feel the heat and be given the job of trying to calm things down will be the police/army etc...who if the public really turns, are small in number and yet though we call on them to sort things out and yes it is there chosen profession, look what usually happens when it is all over, they are criticised usually by...the politicians...
The last unrest in London, Birmingham and Manchester did overspill and see shops and some "Fellow" innocent citizens caught up and in danger and again the reasons given by the politicians and experts for the unrest were probably wrong but say it often enough the wider population starts to believe it. I don't think it has gone away...
Just have to see what sets things away again...as it will. And when.
I cannot disagree with anything(why would I wish to?)Grey Queen says and I cannot add anything to such a well thought out post..."A government afraid of its citizens is a Democracy. Citizens afraid of government is tyranny!" ~Thomas Jefferson

Echoing what others are saying here: great post, GreyQueen, and thinking of you, 2Tonsils.
The local papers (in UK) may be good sources of information about any crop failures and blights. More so than some of the nationals.Keep calm and keep crafting :happyhear0 -

To my sure and certain knowledge there is at least one household in central Crete with a Uzi sub-machine gun under the matrimonial bed.
My observations of life in Crete is that the younger women often have a bit of a dog's life but the reward seems to be in later life. You see elderly village matrons, ramrod-backed and with their silver hair up in a coil or a bun and their middle-aged sons running around to do their every whim as if someone had lit a fire under them. Regal doesn't even come close to how some of these ladies carry themselves, and how they are treated by their families.
Can you imagine what would happen if the matriarch of a large and well-armed clan was manhandled or intimidated by tax collectors in her own home?Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

The program about sphagnum moss that I saw was years ago BB. I only remember the man showing how to do it but I am fuzzy on detail.0

what amazing fantastic posts this has brought about...I thought it over and put a post on my facebook saying simply that I was aware of things that were going on politically between Greece and the EU and that my friends who live here might like to give some thought on stocking up on essential meds, food and fuel as there were likely to be developments in the couple of months coming up. I have got quite a few thank you's and a few unexpected ones totally agreeing with me.
People were worried about the tourism being affected if the truth got out but its the locals being affected not the tourists. Having said that, the news that the mosquitoes are now spreading Malaria and Nile fever in parts of Greece is not going to go down well. It's already in the press and on some of the health sites. They usually spray for it, but that is being cut down due to the cuts.
Thanks to the people ready to run into the line of fire and save me......lol.....believe me, I am ready to defend myself if need be, or escape on the ferry if I can't! You would probably come all this way on the double decker only to find us drinking ouzo and singing on the karaoke.......if you are going down the drain you might as well go in style......at the moment ''eve of destruction'' is one of my favourites to sing to a captive audience.
Just seen that they are going to add 2 euros special tax to a pack of cigarettes to pay for health care....now that will start riots....
I can just imagine the tax men arriving in the village......all my neighbours have shotguns and more exciting items.....I will never forget the Jehovas'
witnesses being frogmarched out of the village on a Sunday morning...complete with their suits on and briefcases. It's actually against the law to disturb someone's peaceful enjoyment of their home here.....and certainly against the law to try to convert them to another religion. Interestingly, spam mail and advertising junk mail is also illegal here.
Whatever, don't lose any sleep worrying about me or the Greek situation, what will be will be and worrying won't make any difference to the outcome. I am just going to enjoy the sunshine, walks in the fresh air and my lovely village and home...I am going shopping tomorrow to replenish some of my stocks though. Goodnight folks and thanks for all your support. If I can sort out the links to the translations I will post a few of the news items if you are interested.“The superior man, when resting in safety, does not forget that danger may come. This is a brilliant thread. Thanks for starting it, Vanoonoo.
I cant take full credit for the thread - I started one for resources mainly for myself when i started to focus on my preps in the summer then mardatha started one for scenarios to help thought processes and they got merged and then the haters helped raise our defences and gave me the idea for c.r.a.p r.o.l.l.z which is a nice sideline and has taken on a life of it's own within this threadbut you are right that it's a brilliant thread - I really enjoy reading how everyone is doing and how our fighting spirit keeps us well prepared. welcome aboard!
