Yes big difference between wanting to and being able to. Though this now means that if the utilities are now victim to a cyber attack then the blame now rests entirely with the utility. They cannot say they were not warned.

Utilities have been aware of, and planning for, cyber attacks for some time. This isn't new for them, even if the threat is from a different source. Critical national infrastructure is carefully protected in the majority of countries, and the regulation and standards are pretty tight.

It's actually easier to disrupt utilities with physical attacks than via cyber attacks. And there's plenty of effort put into avoiding that too.

Apparently, they don't yet have the capability to do those things, but would like to. Not surprisingly.

    Agreed.

Though I was watching a little mini-video on YouTube by Anonymous this morning. The male narrator is obviously one of the French members of this (judging by his accent). Anyway - its clear Anonymous have declared war as an "organisation" against Isis.

That, I felt, was one bit of good news to read today. All power to their elbow on that and, if I were a computer geek (instead of with a very "basic" knowledge only of computers) then I would be fighting back via my computer too and keeping a close eye on Isis and reporting anything the Authorities needed to know about their plans.

Agreed that the utilities etc should have been keeping a close eye on their systems for some time now - as there are others that have been trying to attack our systems for a while now (eg the Chinese).
  • I'm making sure I know where things are today like the candles and matches and having a solar lamp ready, I've got the fire laid and can easily get to the camping stove so if we do get a power disruption it can be business as normal until it comes back on again. I'm filling some bottles of water so I can have tea and keep warm that way and have the wind up radio by my chair. It's a satisfying feeling knowing that I have the means to cope if there is a power outage, makes weather events less daunting in prospect. I'm going to also look out a couple of tins that will be easy and quick to heat up on the camp stove so I don't have to open the fridge/freezer and lose coldness. I like that feeling of actually being prepared, of course the unforeseen can always happen and you can't prepare for that but I like being able to feel I can cope without help until normality returns.

Aye Mar. I have been sat listening thinking 'this is the bloke that has known there has been 7 terrorist plots foiled in the past 6 months with one being this month, while we didn't necessarily know, and still hell bent on cutting police numbers'

I may be making too much of this but I was in central London last night and wanted to phone DH to pick me up from station. I could not get any network cover on my phone. It does sometimes throw a hissy fit and I find switching it off and on again sorts it out - but not this time. It came back a hundred yards out of Charing X.

I wondered if TPTB were not blocking mobile networks exactly, because everyone would notice that, but attenuating selected signals/networks enough to make contact a bit more hit and miss round obvious targets to stop certain groups being able to communicate reliably?
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!
  • I think priority over ALL things must be given to detection and prevention of terrorist plots and that will take a great deal of manpower and therefore a great deal of money. I would rather by far money was used for that purpose than things like the proposed new fast link railway line etc. We can't have it all, we never could, but the most important thing on the agenda for anyone in the western world MUST be to prevent any more attacks like those in Paris on Friday!

I get that the way the media are portraying things and with the shock of what happened in Paris, many people will happily go along with a government line of throwing more money at security forces and that they need more controls. BUT remember controls can be used against any person not just a terrorist and we need to try and put things in perspective. Over 1700 people died on our roads last year around 6500 died from alcohol related issues and over 100k from smoking. Terrorists are far less likely to effect any of us that other stuff around us all the time.

I would not give any government carte blanche to make us safe that us the route to tyranny.

Sure they could delay HS2 and even trident. The priorities should be to boost security at the border and being an island nation that should be easier than for a continental country like France. That should be the priority rather than destroy all our other freedoms in the name of fighting terrorism. Living in a police state does not equate to being any safer.
It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.

The terrorists are trying to destroy our freedoms.

Increase in policing or military on the streets maybe a knee jerk reaction but it's welcome in my mind.
