Not sure if this is the 'right' thread to put this in but thought you all might be interested to read this:-

Blackout fears as factories are paid NOT to use electricity and the cost of National Grid buying in power jumps by 4,000%

    • Emergency notice sees big businesses cut demand by 40MW tonight
    • Power firms were also urged to increase supplies to avoid shortages
    • Unions brand the plan to pay factories to power down as 'bonkers'

^^ We are only just into November for goodness sakes - we are having a mild spell of weather at the present so what is going to happen if we have a bad cold snap?

This is not good at all :(

  • It's the sense of being prepared RAINYDAYS if the un thinkable does actually happen then we'll have ways round the biggest problems and the means to look after ourselves until problems are sorted out or at the very least be self sufficient for a while and not part of the problem and taking the emergency services from other folks who really DO need helping.

High demand periods are known as Triads.

My company is a high power user and, most years, we get a handful of Triad warnings.
Thanks for clearing that up. I did not know the name of the process. So how much cannabis does your firm grow? ;)

I will be honest Mrs LW I know not allot about the grid and things such as this, but what I do know is that allot of the old nuclear plants are going off line as are the old coal and gas fired power stations as well. On the drive home on Monday the wind turbines were hardly moving and it seems the 'grid' is relying more and more on wind power without enough back up.

Then when we have a really windy spell they have to switch allot of the turbines off because the wind speeds are too strong. All of this was done on a shoestring IMHO and little thought was given to long term known projections in the increasing consuption of power this country needs. If they are advising companies this evening to 'power down' and this is during a very mild spell of weather then we could possibly see things 'ramping up' to the enth degree when we really go into a cold spell.

Seems the Christmas lights might have to be switched off after all! That won't go down too well!

Edited to add that I have just read back through pages 1744 and 1745 and see some of you are alreday aware of this! Sorry needed to clear that up just in case you thought I had gone back to the brandy tonight

Sh*t a brick. They're going to be able to turn the gas off as well:

    3.9.
Following extensive consultation with a range of stakeholders and independently commissioned analysis, the Government‟s view, subject to consultation, is that the policy benefits of including a gas valve in the minimum functional requirements for domestic smart meters and the certainty this brings outweigh those of leaving the inclusion of a gas valve to supplier choice. The analysis underpinning this is set out in the DECC paper on “Disablement/enablement functionality for smart gas meters” published alongside this document and the analytical annex to the impact assessment. Supporting analysis by Gemserv on the same issue is also published today

I had a look at the options for disconnection. I am protected user but I am also in credit and have never had a problem paying my bill. So while I might not be impacted there will be some who are. I suspect that there will be a fair number who are load limited if they have been sanctioned by the benefits office. The problem with prepayment meters is that it is super profitable for energy companies and so there are incentives for them to get as many as possible onto them.

I suspect that if there was an EMP attack then there would be millions without power or gas for years, as it would take so long to repair them.
