Just a suggestion (and I don't know how to do it) but might it be a sensible idea to split the PREPPING thread into two, it's become very long and perhaps one half be for things on a practical level like what to store, how to make chutney, how to dig a compost loo etc. and the other half for information from Zerohedge etc. so that people who are finger on the banking financial pulse readers don't have to wade their way through my chutney recipes and those who are more concerned with the price of baked beans and how to obtain clean water don't have to wade through all the financial and political info either? There will be those of us who will read along on both but it might make sense to do it?

I think everything in one place is good. At least if there is a problem that would impact everyone it would reach more people sooner.

As for SHTF Chutney situations I would probably start here as well. Though the old school cooking threads would probably cover that as well.

  • Went to a car boot sale this morning (oddly, there wasn't a single car boot for sale, on any of the stalls  ), and picked up a few bits.

10 Litres of Washing Up Liquid, for £4.

3 King Size flat sheets, for £12.

A hardback book, called Area 51, for 75p.

These are just small examples (am in a rush to head out the door) but understand absolutely that you need as a minimum, 3-6 months' worth of expenses accessible at all times. Or you'll be at risk of hocking your goods and chattels to pay the bills.

Yes but how many really have 6 months of expenses and can afford to build them up quickly? Most are living from paycheque to paycheque. I was at that point not that long ago.

While I am paying down my last debt I am not near that level but thankfully thanks to the tips and inspiration from this thread my living costs are ultra low, it will only take me 9 months to get 6 months living costs put aside.

Has anyone tried making peanut or nut butter from walnuts? If so how did it turn out? I have a small packet to use up and considering mixing with peanuts or trying on their own.

  • If only all our other contributors/reader alongers were happy with everything on one thread I'd happily say leave things be but, unfortunately there are some of our number who are NOT happy with things as they stand. It might be a sensible move to divide the two strands of prepping, it might even make the financial/economic side of things seem less scary ( I know it's good sense to know this side of things too) if they were on a dedicated thread of their own. 1719 pages is a very big read if you are just starting prepping and a new start with one practical side and another theoretical/financial side might be helpful to newbies who are looking to join us?

Well done! Thats a deal of washing up you will be doing. I am addicted to the extent that 95% of all my purchases are from CBS! Yesterday I bought a fruit press, still boxed, for #3. Also 14 hand soaps for #1. I keep a list of all requirements and one by one if I wait long enough they will turn up at a car boot. They will shortly stop for the winter and I will have definite withdrawal symptoms!

I like everything all together :)

If you need anything specific you can always go back to the lists at the beginning or give a shout out.

The thread is really interesting and I have learned a great deal about things I wouldn't even have thought about - let alone looked up.

At the start of the thread it says it's for talking about running out of milk to complete social breakdown.
Think we're covering everything pretty well :D

As an aside,at what age are you meant to stop getting a thrill from finding a MASSIVE conker in the park?:rotfl:

Nargle - hope you will be ok
Not dim ;) .....just living in soft focus :p
  • Personally I enjoy the financial stuff, don't understand too much but I try, also the chutney and allotment stuff. All of the topics on this thread, the sublime and the ridiculous, make for a educational and highly enjoyable read. Long may it continue.
