  • I'm glad I've got a simple flip phone. :)
  • I see the "mellifluous" joke went over your head, GQ.

I'm sure CTC will get it, when she reads it. :)

~ £500 will keep you going, for a few months?

Yes my normal weekly food shop is between £5 to £20 a week. Many things are already automated like rates, water and electricity so if there were a bank holiday like in Greece these would still go through.

What's wrong with making it subscription

You can't be sent to jail, for not having a TV Licence.
Well you could. At one point one in eight women in prison were for non payment of the TV license.

Making it subscription would suit Sky even more because they already have a significant share of the TV revenues and subscriptions would only increase that abuse.

I've moved on to the stage where no money is needed for rent or mortgage - and £500 wouldn't begin to "cut it" for a month worth of expenditure.

I have a friend here that reckons she has to live on around that sort of income and is managing it (no rent or mortgage due) and my mind is boggling at how she is surviving on that. She tells me her clothes are all from charity shops/she has no fridge/no tv/never has a cup of coffee "out"/etc - but my mind is still boggling as to how she does it...
Well if you exclude rent and rates, my electricity bill is around £34 a month, no gas, my water £50 because it is unmetered, it would be around £10 a month on a meter. Phone line is £5 a month, Mobile £7 a month, broadband £15 a month and food maximum around £80 a month, less if I go into economy mode and live off YS items. I can still save around £700 a month and am currently using that to clear the credit card. Though I am still using it for items that need to be bought.

Basically I spend like I am on unemployment benefit and save the difference.

Of the four cats we've had, only one has ever travelled in a box, and that was only once.

I knew there was a tv programme I meant to watch. Thanks for the reminder.

Another reason to stick to my dead basic "outa the Ark" type mobile phone...

EDIT; Just watched it and I think its a useful watch for anyone who hasn't been aware for many years that this is how things are. The one point I noted was Edward Snowden saying at the end that "Well, we have a promise from them so far that they wont torture me" (ie the US Government have stated to him that they wont torture him if he goes back to the US). Errrrr....he didn't actually believe them, did he???? Though goodness knows there are plenty of intimidatory/harassing tactics short of actual physical torture available....as any Ordinary Person in the Street could assert.

Can I ask why you don't get your water metered if it would save you £40 a month?

    £500 a year is a big saving.
