The problem for the police in that if they get all the phone details of everyone at a crime scene it is completely dependent on the criminal actually keeping their phone with them. if the criminal does just that then they will be masked by the police search through the lives of everyone else there.

Tracking could also be an alibi if you know about it, and can get access to that data. More so if you are somewhere and talking to a third party at the same time.
It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.

When I was on my speed awareness course a couple of years ago, (naughty JK0 got caught at 46 in a 40 limit) the teacher told us that in the event of a fatal accident the police will analyse your phone data. From the position at various times, they will work out your speed, and so determine if you were speeding.

Yup. By comparing the time a given signal from your phone arrives at three or more base stations they can tell exactly where it it.

I believe a number of the London rioters were identified by this method.

I think phones would need to have GPS capabilities to track in the realms that I described earlier but as far as I am aware all phones can be tracked by those who need to know, have permission to do it etc etc pinging/triangulation methods - I'm no techie, just like watching programming of the ilk.

And the moral of this story is dot take your phone when rioting and get a decent balaclava just in case.

Of course, if you think of it, the phone location data of every phone must be constantly recorded without the need for 'pinging a phone' in real time. Otherwise the police could not look back to see what speed you were travelling, or to compare signal locations with CCTV recordings in London.
