  • Really, Cooltrikerchick, what right do you have to tell anyone to shut up, or try to dictate to them what they can or cannot say or think? If you believe someone's comment has offended the forum guidelines, report it to the mods - otherwise people can have whatever opinions they like, regardless of whether you personally agree with them or not.

There, tell me to shut up, call me troll, whatever. I am done reading this thread and all its petty bickering.
Above all, I have been a sentient being, a thinking animal, on this beautiful planet, and that in itself has been an enormous privilege and adventure.

  • Sadly ROSIEPUP we can't please all the folks who read along all of the time. I'm sad that you've been upset by some of the discussions we've had of late but we, including you, are all allowed an opinion and it just ISN'T possible for us all to agree with each other 100% of the time, life just isn't like that pet. We do sort things out in the long run though and I just wanted to say you're ALWAYS welcome on the preppers thread, I'd hate it if you or anyone else were driven away because the posts get slightly 'robust' on occasion and rather more frank than you're happy with. We're all just ordinary people united (in the main) by a common feeling that we'd like to be ahead of the game should problems big enough arise. Don't feel driven away, stay and be welcome as part of the whole!
  • Here's a question .....

On 'Desert Island Discs' why does nobody take 'The SAS Survival Guide' as their chosen book and a Swiss army knife (or similar) as their luxury item?

People on a public forum need to be able to cope with disagreements.
The idea of dehydrating and storing jellybabies is totally ridiculous and should be made ILLEGAL !!
Greyqueen I went mad and picked up 3 packets of pecan chocolate traybake thingies.
Just watched the steam train going past on the new railway - really fabulous noise and I do so love steam. I'm sure one day we will be forced to bring back coal and steam power. What do others think on this?

Frugalsod, that link is scary. We were always told at school (long before global warming was even thought of) that if the Gulf Stream failed, then Scotland was finished. We would end up like Siberia and be ice-bound all winter. That report says the area of intense cold is lat 55N- 60N .. that's Scotland. I need to knit faster lol
  • OH YES PLEASE!!!!! steam trains of course and really nothing to do with pecan chocolate traybake thingies in any way, really I mean honest missis!!! Steam is sensible, we have coal, we have water (altogether too much on some days) and we have track laid so steam seems only like common sense if electricity is not available and to be honest I much prefer the steam option, love seeing all the showmans engines and traction engines and steamrollers at the steam fairs even steam lorries and cars are on show so all is possible as long s we have the engineering skills in the workforce to make the complex steam boilers etc. not to forget steam ploughs (horses much better in my view though) steam threshers etc. and all the other wonderful agricultural machineries that were steam driven.

Or a TARDIS, so much more practical.

I am terribly sorry I was only thinking of options to maintain your supply of jelly babies so that you could maintain sufficient stocks to get you through anything.

Though are you planning to corner the post apocalyptic supply of jelly babies?

55N is Newcastle upon Tyne (I've long said the border should be moved down to the Tyne or Hadrian's Wall - built to keep the English from escaping the Empire and its taxes :).

Thankfully we have pockets of expertise on steam, between the rally folk and the railway folk. A friend is building a model steam engine (12 inches to the foot scale) and was pleased to find plenty of friendly expertise on the boiler - the really dangerous bit.

It is and why we should be doing more to cut carbon emissions. Colder and more extreme conditions are going to problematic.
