  • I'm not sure that any long life/dried milk would make cheese

I'm still trying to catch up, but in case no-one else has mentioned it you can make cheese from dried milk. I made it fairly successfully a while ago. I can't find the recipe I used but this looks very similar.

I haven't heard anybody mention suet in their stocks. I have a few packets of vegetarian suet as it has a decent shelf-life and as well as cooking it can be used as the fat to make soap (so I'm told).

Thanks ANIMAL TRIBE I've learned something new today thanks to you! I do have some packets of suet in my store but I also have close to 100 bars of soap so the suet will be puddings, much appreciated in cold weather, I like rib sticker dumplings ooohhhhhh yum!!!

I've added to my stash this morning a large tin of haricot beans, a large tin of apple slices, 2 x packets of Wil*os Day and Night Cold and Flu Capsules, a tube of tomato puree, a tin of basics drinking chocolate, 2 x packs of 24 Oxo cubes (I Beef, 1 Chicken),and a bottle of Tea Tree Shampoo. I try to pick up a few things every week and wait until they are as low a price as I think they'll get or actually on offer. Good haul for not much outlay. AND a bottle of basics brown sauce!!!

1T It's a good thing to keep a finger on the pulse of the world, it's good to look all round and try to spot potential problems as they emerge and make preps so they have as little impact on your lives as it's possible to have but don't be looking for spooks behind every bush, the media are very good at hyping up a story to sell papers/attract viewers, it's all about ratings and it's not unknown for embroidery to be added to the stark facts to make it a BETTER story. My philosophy is don't go looking for trouble, if it's going to find you you'll know soon enough.

Suet is very useful stuff - very filling. I think it would be great for people who need to turn their heating down in winter, very nourishing and filling.

Does flour automatically go with suet. I know I always mix it in with dumplings but dumplings is all I know with regard to suet. I'm trying to reduce/elimate grains for while. Any ideas with what I can do with suet?
  • Suet is pure fat, it's the dense fat that accumulates round the kidneys. You could use it as a fat to fry things in as it will melt and it is used in soap making too. You could try using gram flour(chick pea flour) sometimes called Besan Flour, you can make flatbreads with gram flour (the French have one called SOCCA) so I don't see why the chick pea flour wouldn't make dumplings or suet pastry too, it might be slightly different textured to wheat flour but might be worth giving it a try? I know you can make a batter from gram flour as that's what is used in Onion Bhajees and Pakoras.

I cannot use packet suet as it usually has some form of wheat starch to keep it from forming a solid block. I have bought suet in a lump from the butcher and made my own by grating it, or substituted solid coconut oil for it. It was nicer with the coconut hardened oil and it is much better for you.

You could also use gluten free flour to make the dumplings. I found the gram flour too heavy, and also rice flour. You can freeze or vacuum pack the gluten free flour so it keeps fresh for longer. OUr organic Greek gluten free comes in waterproof vacuum sealed packs and costs less than the imported stuff. It also makes lovely cakes!

Funnily enough, I have just made pancakes using a sourdough starter and gram flour - they have worked extraordinarily well.

I'm still pages behind but just wanted to say thank you for mentioning this. I happen to have an old washing machine (as I wanted to use the glass door as a large bowl), but haven't got around to taking it apart yet. When I do I'll try the fire pit too. I might not post much but I read all the posts (eventually) and you are all an inspirational bunch.

Basically it has bent over metal "legs" welded to the bottom of the drum. OH reckons he could have done it himself had we had our own welding equipment, but the guy we got it from is local and only charges £15 (may be slightly more now).

I meant using the gram flour for dumplings, it would absorb too much liquid and go heavy....like rice flour does.

The situation with the migrants crossing Europe seems to be getting really out of hand now. I am just watching the updates. As Greece gets ready for the winter and the tourists leave, there will be no money coming in to help any of them and the drownings will increase as the storms set in. I dont think migrants could survive the harsh winter we are going to get this year...so what on earth is going to be done?
