The thing is too that these things aren't just about a "standard of living" (though gawdknows that is a factor in this sort of situation for sure). It is also about keeping the lifestyle/mindset one is used to and having things go according to that (ie if its better/perceived as better by you).

If you can be in the same country even as you are used to and feel sorely tempted sometimes to say "Look - I come from x in the year so-and-so. So that is what I will assume things are like"....then I can only quail at people being refugees from their society-as-used-to-be to a different country and trying to "get what they are used to" for themselves...

I feel sorry for the folks having to boil all the water for consumption, but those bugs are nasty, they can kill.

You could always put it through a Sawyer filter, and, to be doubly sure, does it with bleach.

I think that a steripen would be a good alternative as well, instead of the bleach.

When my tealight heaters arrived I splurged on 500 tea lights from IKEA so that should get me through a few winters less if I actually light them.
what are tealight heaters and where do you buy them?

Very easy to make, my husband has made eight of them and they really do raise the temperature of a room.
I will try and [STRIKE]nag[/STRIKE] ;) ask him to take me over to Ikea to pick up some more tealights this week :p
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

I got lazy and opted to buy these :-

They are still available as part of the Indiegogo InDemand program.

:rotfl:errrm...took me a couple of minutes to "get it"...that very slightly different SOH to the English one.

Has grown to like the English soh over the years - the self-deprecation that it seems to be based around - guess I'd sum it up as "Less 'important' than you and just slightly risqu!-y". The "oh this old thing" response to a clothing compliment you could say SOH.

Some of the migrants had been housed in a hotel for three weeks in Kos...they rioted when they decided it was not good enough for them and they wanted more money......bear in mind they are demanding this in a country where old folks are going hungry and have no medicine. Germany is turning a blind eye and leaving it to Greece and Italy. Many of the ones on the videos have smart phones and designer clothes that no Greek can afford. It is not as simple as the media are making out. Not to mention the fact that it is an easy way for terrorists and suicide bombers to get into Europe and get looked after as well. Hmmm

 Yep, that one worries me too ...

Our own standard of living is on the slide ... I think it's masked in statistics by the increase for the top 5% or so, and maybe by changes in the way stats are gathered. Possibly by corruption on a grand scale too :(

Now there's the Chinese devaluation ... the live business blog on The Guardian has a quote from the Chairman of Societe Generale, and it reads like something from an apocalyptic novel ... I don't see this going anywhere but down.
